1. Basic Economic Concepts |

Scarcity forces individuals and societies to make choices, leading to opportunity cost — the value of the next best alternative forgone.

The production possibilities curve (PPC) illustrates trade-offs, efficiency, and economic growth. Points inside the curve represent unemployment or inefficient use of resources; points outside are unattainable with current resources and technology.

An outward shift of the PPC indicates economic growth, caused by an increase in resources or technological advances. Inward shifts occur when resources are destroyed.

Positive economics relies on testable, objective statements, whereas normative economics involves subjective value judgments about what ought to be.

2. Supply and Demand Fundamentals |

The demand curve slopes downward: as price falls, quantity demanded rises. The supply curve slopes upward: as price rises, quantity supplied increases.

Market equilibrium occurs at the intersection of supply and demand. Changes in determinants — such as income, tastes, or production costs — shift the curves and lead to a new equilibrium price and quantity.

Price ceilings set below equilibrium create persistent shortages; price floors set above equilibrium generate surpluses.

These foundational microeconomic mechanisms are embedded in aggregate models and help explain resource allocation at the macro level.

3. Measuring Economic Performance |

Gross Domestic Product (GDP) captures the market value of all final goods and services produced within a country in a given year. Using the expenditure approach: GDP = C + I + G + (X − M).

按支出法计算:GDP = C + I + G + (X − M)。

Nominal GDP measures output at current prices, while real GDP adjusts for inflation, revealing true changes in production. The GDP deflator helps convert nominal to real values.

The unemployment rate equals the number of unemployed actively looking for work divided by the labor force. Economists distinguish frictional, structural, and cyclical unemployment. Full employment occurs when cyclical unemployment is zero.

Inflation is a sustained rise in the general price level. The Consumer Price Index (CPI) compares the cost of a fixed basket of goods over time. Inflation rate = (CPI this year − CPI last year) / CPI last year × 100.

4. Aggregate Demand and Aggregate Supply |

The aggregate demand (AD) curve shows the total quantity of goods and services demanded at each price level. It slopes downward due to the wealth effect, interest rate effect, and international trade effect.

Short-run aggregate supply (SRAS) slopes upward because nominal wages and some input prices are sticky. The long-run aggregate supply (LRAS) curve is vertical at the full-employment level of output, representing the economy’s potential GDP.

AD shifts with changes in consumption, investment, government purchases, or net exports. SRAS shifts with changes in input costs, productivity, or supply shocks. LRAS shifts rightward with increases in resources, technology, or institutional quality.

In the AD-AS model, short-run equilibrium occurs where AD intersects SRAS; the long-run adjustment process moves the economy toward the LRAS curve through changes in nominal wages and prices.

5. Fiscal Policy and the Multiplier |

Fiscal policy involves changes in government spending (G) and taxes (T) to influence aggregate demand. Expansionary fiscal policy (increase G, decrease T) shifts AD right; contractionary fiscal policy shifts AD left.

Spending Multiplier = 1 / (1 − MPC) = 1 / MPS

1 / (1 − MPC) = 1 / MPS

A change in spending has a multiplied impact on real GDP. The tax multiplier is smaller in absolute value: −MPC / (1 − MPC).

Automatic stabilizers — such as progressive income taxes and unemployment benefits — automatically reduce the amplitude of business cycles without discretionary policy.

Crowding out occurs when deficit-financed government spending raises interest rates, reducing private investment and partially offsetting the initial expansion.

6. Money, Banking, and Monetary Policy |

Money functions as a medium of exchange, unit of account, and store of value. The M1 measure includes currency and checkable deposits; M2 adds savings deposits, money market funds, and other near-monies.

Fractional reserve banking enables banks to lend out a portion of deposits, creating money through the deposit expansion process. The simple deposit multiplier is 1 / reserve requirement ratio.

The central bank (the Federal Reserve) uses open market operations, the discount rate, and reserve requirements to influence the money supply and interest rates. Buying government securities injects reserves and lowers the federal funds rate (expansionary); selling securities does the reverse.

The quantity theory of money: MV = PY, where M is money supply, V is velocity, P is price level, and Y is real GDP. If V is stable, growth in the money supply leads to proportionate inflation in the long run.
