1. Scarcity, Opportunity Cost, and the PPC |

The fundamental economic problem is scarcity: unlimited wants but limited resources. Every decision therefore involves an opportunity cost — the value of the next best alternative forgone. The Production Possibilities Curve models this trade-off, showing maximum output combinations of two goods that an economy can produce with full employment of available resources and technology.

Limited resources force choice. Points outside the PPC are unattainable; points inside represent inefficient resource use.
The slope of the PPC measures the trade-off. A concave PPC indicates increasing opportunity cost; a straight line indicates constant opportunity cost.
Efficiency 效率 Producing at the lowest possible cost. Points on the PPC represent productive efficiency; a movement along the curve reflects trade-offs.
An outward shift of the PPC. Caused by increases in resource quantity/quality or technological improvements.

2. Supply and Demand |

The law of demand states that, ceteris paribus, price and quantity demanded are inversely related. The law of supply states a direct relationship between price and quantity supplied. Market demand is the horizontal sum of individual demands, while market supply adds up individual firm supplies. Shifts vs. movements along the curves are essential to distinguish — a change in the product’s own price causes a movement; a change in a determinant shifts the entire curve.

Tastes/Preferences 偏好 Change in preference → demand shifts N/A
Income 收入 Normal goods: income ↑ → D ↑; Inferior goods: income ↑ → D ↓ N/A
Prices of Related Goods Substitutes: P_y ↑ → D_x ↑; Complements: P_y ↑ → D_x ↓ N/A
Input/Resource Costs 投入成本 N/A Input price ↑ → Supply ↓ (left shift)
Technology 技术 N/A Improvement → Supply ↑
Expectations 预期 Expect future price ↑ → D now ↑ Expect future price ↑ → S now ↓
Number of Buyers/Sellers More buyers → D ↑ More sellers → S ↑

3. Market Equilibrium and Efficiency |

When quantity demanded equals quantity supplied, the market is in equilibrium. At any other price, either a surplus (excess supply) or a shortage (excess demand) exists, pushing price towards equilibrium. Consumer surplus and producer surplus together measure total welfare, which is maximized at competitive equilibrium. Government-imposed price controls — price ceilings and price floors — create deadweight loss by preventing mutually beneficial trades.

Qd = Qs, market clears Maximizes total surplus (no DWL)
Legal maximum price below equilibrium Creates persistent shortage, DWL, potential black markets
Legal minimum price above equilibrium Creates persistent surplus, DWL, government may purchase excess
Total Surplus 总剩余 CS + PS Reduced by any deviation from competitive equilibrium

4. Elasticity | 弹性

Elasticity measures the responsiveness of quantity demanded or supplied to changes in determinants. Price elasticity of demand (PED) is the percentage change in quantity demanded divided by the percentage change in price. Its absolute value determines whether demand is elastic (>1), unit elastic (1), or inelastic (<1). Total revenue test: if demand is elastic, a price decrease raises total revenue; if inelastic, a price decrease lowers total revenue.

Price Elasticity of Demand (PED) 需求价格弹性 %ΔQd / %ΔP Total Revenue test; determinants include substitutes, necessity vs luxury, time horizon
Price Elasticity of Supply (PES) 供给价格弹性 %ΔQs / %ΔP Depends mainly on time and flexibility of production
Cross-Price Elasticity 交叉价格弹性 %ΔQd of X / %ΔP of Y Positive → substitutes; Negative → complements
Income Elasticity of Demand 需求收入弹性 %ΔQd / %ΔIncome Positive → normal good; Negative → inferior good; >1 → luxury

5. Consumer Choice and Utility Maximization |

Consumers aim to maximize total utility given their budget constraint. The utility-maximizing rule states that consumers allocate income so that the marginal utility per dollar spent on each good is equal: MU₁/P₁ = MU₂/P₂ = … = MUₙ/Pₙ. The law of diminishing marginal utility explains why demand curves slope downward. Indifference curves and budget lines provide a graphical analysis of consumer equilibrium.

Total satisfaction from consumption Increases at a decreasing rate as consumption rises, due to diminishing MU
Extra utility from one additional unit Typically diminishes with each extra unit consumed
Budget Line 预算线 Combinations of two goods affordable given income and prices Slope = -P_x / P_y; shift rotates when relative price changes
Combinations providing equal utility Downward sloping, convex to origin; slope = MRS = -MU_x / MU_y
Tangency of budget line and highest indifference curve MRS = P_x / P_y, equivalent to MU_x/P_x = MU_y/P_y

6. Costs of Production |

Understanding short-run costs is essential to analyzing firm behavior. Total cost is divided into fixed costs (do not vary with output) and variable costs (increase with output). Important per-unit measures include average fixed cost (AFC), average variable cost (AVC), average total cost (ATC), and marginal cost (MC). The MC curve intersects both AVC and ATC at their minimum points. The long-run average total cost curve is often U-shaped due to economies and diseconomies of scale.

Constant Does not change with output (e.g., rent)
Increases with Q Initially rises at a decreasing rate, then at an increasing rate
Total Cost (TC) 总成本 TFC + TVC Parallel to TVC, shifted up by TFC
Marginal Cost (MC) 边际成本 ΔTC / ΔQ = ΔTVC / ΔQ Typically U-shaped; cuts AVC and ATC at their minimums
TFC / Q Continuously declines as output rises
TVC / Q U-shaped; minimum where MC = AVC
TC / Q = AFC + AVC U-shaped; minimum where MC = ATC

7. Perfect Competition |

A perfectly competitive market has many buyers and sellers, a homogeneous product, perfect information, and free entry and exit. Firms are price takers, facing a perfectly elastic demand curve at the market price. The profit-maximizing rule is to produce where marginal revenue equals marginal cost (MR = MC). In the short run, firms can earn economic profits or incur losses; in the long run, free entry and exit drive economic profit to zero, with firms producing at the minimum of ATC. Allocative efficiency (P = MC) and productive efficiency (P = min ATC) are achieved in long-run equilibrium.

Number of Firms 企业数量 Many, very small relative to market
Identical (homogeneous)
Demand Curve Faced by Firm Horizontal (perfectly elastic) at market price
MR = P (since firm can sell all units at that price)
Zero economic profit (P = ATC)
Efficiency 效率 Both productive and allocative efficiency in long-run equilibrium
Short-run: shut down if P < AVC; Long-run: exit if P < ATC

8. Monopoly | 垄断

A pure monopoly exists when a single firm is the sole producer of a product with no close substitutes, and there are high barriers to entry. Barriers include economies of scale (natural monopoly), government patents or licenses, and control of essential resources. Unlike a perfect competitor, a monopolist faces the entire downward-sloping market demand curve, so its marginal revenue is always less than price. The monopolist maximizes profit at MR = MC, setting price above marginal cost, which creates deadweight loss and underproduction relative to the competitive outcome.

Downward sloping = market demand
To sell more, firm must lower price on all units, so MR falls faster than price
Produce where MR = MC; price set on demand curve above that quantity
Monopoly output is lower and price higher than competitive equilibrium, reducing consumer surplus and total welfare
Charging different prices to different consumers; captures more consumer surplus, can reduce or eliminate DWL
High fixed costs make one large firm more efficient than many small ones; often regulated

9. Monopolistic Competition and Oligopoly |

Monopolistic competition combines features of perfect competition and monopoly: many firms, differentiated products, and low barriers to entry. In the short run, firms behave like monopolies and can earn profits; in the long run, entry shifts demand leftward until firms earn zero economic profit, though they still operate with excess capacity. Oligopoly is a market dominated by a few interdependent firms. Strategic behavior matters, often modeled with game theory (e.g., Nash equilibrium in a prisoner’s dilemma). Collusion can produce outcomes similar to monopoly.

Number of Firms 企业数量 Many Few (interdependent)
Differentiated Identical or differentiated
Barriers to Entry 进入壁垒 Low High (economies of scale, brand loyalty, etc.)
Zero economic profit (P = ATC, but not min ATC) Can be positive due to barriers
Advertise, differentiate; produce where MC = MR Strategic pricing, game theory, possible collusion
Efficiency 效率 Excess capacity; P > MC, so allocatively inefficient Often inefficient unless competitive pressure or regulation

10. Factor Markets |

Firms demand inputs — labor, capital, land — to produce goods and services. In perfectly competitive factor markets, a firm hires labor up to the point where marginal revenue product of labor (MRPL) equals the wage (W). MRPL is the extra revenue from an additional worker, calculated as marginal product of labor (MPL) times product price (MR). The firm’s labor demand curve is the downward-sloping portion of the MRPL curve. Factor market shifts can arise from changes in product demand, productivity, or prices of other inputs.
