A period is a horizontal row in the periodic table; elements in the same period have the same number of electron shells. A group is a vertical column; elements in the same group have the same number of valence electrons and similar chemical properties.

A homologous series is a family of organic compounds with the same general formula, similar chemical properties, and a trend in physical properties. Each member differs from the next by a CH₂ unit.

A functional group is an atom or group of atoms that gives a homologous series its characteristic chemical reactions. For example, the hydroxyl group (−OH) in alcohols and the carboxyl group (−COOH) in carboxylic acids.
