📚 GCSE WJEC Business: Essay Writing Template | GCSE WJEC 商务:Essay写作模板

Mastering the essay question in GCSE WJEC Business can make the difference between a grade 4 and a grade 9. Many students lose marks not because they lack knowledge, but because they fail to structure their answers effectively. This article provides a clear, step-by-step template to help you write high-scoring essays that hit all the assessment objectives: knowledge, application, analysis and evaluation.

1. Understanding Command Words |

Command words tell you exactly what the examiner expects. Misinterpreting them is a quick way to lose marks. ‘Explain’ requires you to give reasons and show how something works; ‘analyse’ asks you to break down a concept into its components and examine relationships; ‘evaluate’ demands that you weigh up both sides and reach a supported judgement.

Explain: Show how and why something happens. Use cause-and-effect links.

Analyse: Break down information, identify patterns or components, and discuss the implications.

Evaluate: Make a judgement. Consider advantages and disadvantages, and decide which is more important in the given context.

Discuss: Explore two sides of an issue and then come to a conclusion.

Justify: Give reasons to support a recommendation or decision.

2. Deconstructing the Question |

Before you start writing, underline the topic words, the command word and the context. For instance, in the question: ‘Evaluate the impact of rising interest rates on a small online retailer (12 marks)’, the topic is ‘impact of rising interest rates’, the command is ‘evaluate’, and the context is ‘small online retailer’.

Another example: ‘Discuss the benefits and drawbacks of introducing flexible working for a manufacturing business (10 marks)’. Here, the topic is ‘introducing flexible working’, the command is ‘discuss’, and the context is ‘manufacturing business’. Identifying these elements ensures you answer the exact question set, not a generic one.

3. Planning Your Answer |

Spend 3-5 minutes creating a quick plan. A plan keeps your essay focused and logical. Use a simple table or bullet points: list 3-4 key points, each with supporting application from the case study and an evaluation angle.

A sample plan for the interest rate question might be:

  • Point 1: Higher interest rates increase borrowing costs for the online retailer’s variable-rate loan.
  • Application: XYZ Retail has a £50,000 loan linked to base rate.
  • Evaluation: Short-term pressure, but it has passed on costs before.
  • Point 2: Consumer spending falls as mortgage payments rise, reducing online sales.
  • Application: XYZ sells non-essential luxury gifts; demand is income-elastic.
  • Evaluation: The impact may be softened by a loyal customer base and Christmas season.

4. Introduction Template |

A strong introduction does three things: it defines any key terms, rephrases the question to show understanding, and signposts the structure of your essay. Keep it concise – three to four sentences are enough.

Here is a model introduction for the evaluation question:

“In a dynamic business environment, interest rate changes can have far-reaching consequences. For a small online retailer, higher interest rates may increase loan repayments and dampen consumer demand, yet they could also attract investors seeking better returns. This essay will evaluate whether the overall impact is negative or positive, drawing on the case study of XYZ Retail.”

5. Body Paragraphs: The PEELE Structure | 主体段落:PEELE 结构

Each body paragraph should follow the PEELE structure: Point (state your argument), Evidence (use data or information from the case study), Explanation (explain how and why the evidence supports your point, applying business theory), Link (connect back to the question or to the next paragraph), and Evaluation (add a critical judgement or consider limitations).

Point: Start with a clear topic sentence that directly answers the question. For example, ‘One significant impact of higher interest rates is increased borrowing costs.’

Evidence: Quote specific figures or facts from the case. ‘XYZ Retail currently services a £50,000 variable-rate loan, and each 0.25 percentage point rise adds £125 to annual interest payments.’

Explanation: Use business concepts to unpack the evidence. ‘Higher interest expenses reduce net profit margins, limiting the funds available for marketing and inventory. This links to the concept of financial risk and can weaken the firm’s liquidity position.’

Link: Connect the point to the overall question. ‘Therefore, rising rates create a direct cost burden that threatens profitability.’

Evaluation: Offer a judgement. ‘However, the significance of this impact depends on the extent to which XYZ can renegotiate fixed-rate terms or pass costs to customers. In the short term it is damaging, but the long-term effect may be manageable.’

6. Embedding Application and Context |

WJEC marks heavily on application (AO2). You must refer to the specific business, its products, its market and the data provided. Generic statements like ‘interest rates affect businesses’ will not score well. Instead, write ‘XYZ Retail, which operates in the luxury gift market, is particularly vulnerable because its products have high income elasticity of demand.’

Keep the case study alive throughout your essay. In every paragraph, weave in a piece of evidence: the owner’s name, the financial figures, the type of business ownership, or a recent market trend mentioned in the stimulus material.

7. Evaluation Techniques: Climbing the Ladder to A* | 评估技巧:向高分冲刺

Evaluation (AO4) is the differentiator for top marks. It means making supported judgements and discussing the relative importance of factors. Use phrases that show you are thinking critically, not just describing. Below are some useful evaluative sentence starters.
