Price Elasticity of Demand (PED): A measure of how responsive quantity demanded is to a change in price, calculated as the percentage change in quantity demanded divided by the percentage change in price.

PED = %∆Qd / %∆P

Elastic Demand: Demand is elastic when |PED| > 1, meaning quantity demanded changes by a larger percentage than price; total revenue moves in the opposite direction of price.

Inelastic Demand: Demand is inelastic when |PED| < 1, meaning quantity demanded changes by a smaller percentage than price; total revenue moves in the same direction as price.

Unit Elastic Demand: Demand is unit elastic when |PED| = 1, so total revenue remains constant when price changes.

Perfectly Inelastic Demand: The case where quantity demanded does not change at all as price changes (|PED| = 0); the demand curve is vertical.

Perfectly Elastic Demand: The case where consumers will buy any quantity at a specific price but none at a higher price (|PED| = ∞); the demand curve is horizontal.

Total Revenue Test: A method to determine the elasticity of demand by observing how total revenue changes when price changes. If price and TR move in opposite directions, demand is elastic; if they move in the same direction, demand is inelastic.

Determinants of PED: The main factors are availability of substitutes, proportion of income spent on the good, whether the good is a luxury or necessity, and the time period considered.

Price Floor: A legal minimum price set above the equilibrium price, intended to help producers but often resulting in surpluses (e.g., minimum wage, agricultural price supports).

Deadweight Loss: The loss in total surplus that occurs when the market is not in competitive equilibrium, often due to price controls, taxes, subsidies, or externalities.

Subsidy: A government payment to producers or consumers that encourages production or consumption. It shifts the supply curve to the right (or demand curve to the right) and increases quantity, but creates a deadweight loss.

Lump-Sum Tax: A fixed total tax that does not vary with the level of output. It affects only fixed costs and does not change marginal cost, so it does not shift the supply curve in the short run.

Excise Tax: A tax on a specific good, usually levied on producers, which increases the cost of production and reduces supply.
