1. What Is a Media Case Study? |

A media case study is like taking a magnifying glass to a single media product – an advertisement, a film poster, a website or a music video – and examining every detail. In CCEA Media Studies, we use case studies to apply the key concepts: media language (how meaning is created through camera, colour, sound, layout), representation (how people, places and ideas are portrayed) and audience (who the product is aimed at and how they might respond). Practising case studies helps you build the skills to answer exam questions confidently and to become a more critical consumer of media in everyday life.

2. Choosing Your Case: The SpeedFlex Shoe Ad | 选择案例:SpeedFlex 运动鞋广告

Imagine you are flicking through a teen lifestyle magazine and you see a full-page advert for SpeedFlex trainers. The image shows a teenage boy in mid-stride, apparently leaping off a city pavement. His body is angled forward dynamically. The background is a blurred streak of neon-lit skyscrapers and traffic. In the foreground, his right foot is sharply in focus, with the SpeedFlex logo glowing on the side of the shoe. Across the top of the page, in bold, slanted letters, runs the slogan: ‘Unleash Your Speed’. The brand name sits bottom right in a sleek metallic font. Take a moment to visualise this advert – we will now break it down.

3. Step 1: Describe What You See | 第一步:描述你所看到的

Before you start analysing, you must describe the media text objectively. This means listing exactly what is there without adding your own opinion. For the SpeedFlex ad, we can note: a male teenager, an urban street at night, neon lights, a running pose, one shoe in extreme close-up, the phrase ‘Unleash Your Speed’, the SpeedFlex logo, and a colour scheme dominated by electric blue, orange and black. This description gives you a solid foundation. It is the ‘what’ you are going to explore in terms of ‘how’ and ‘why’ later.

Now, try a quick exercise. Look around your room and pick any poster or magazine cover. In your notebook, write five simple sentences describing only what you see, without using words like ‘cool’ or ‘boring’. This trains your eye for detail.

4. Step 2: Camera Shots and Composition |

Media creators use specific camera shots and angles to influence how we feel about a character or scene. In our print advert, the image is constructed like a photograph. The main shot is a low-angle medium close-up. A low angle (camera looking up) makes the runner seem powerful, heroic and larger than life. The composition also uses a technique called ‘rule of thirds’ – the runner’s body is placed slightly off-centre, which creates a sense of motion and energy. The shoe is given foreground focus through a shallow depth of field, blurring the background so your eye goes straight to the product.

Here is a quick reference for common shot types and the feelings they create:

Extreme Close-Up / 极度特写 Intimate, draws attention to detail / 亲近,吸引对细节的关注
Long Shot / 远景 Shows environment, establishes setting / 展现环境,建立场景

When you analyse an advert, always ask: from where is the camera looking, and what does that angle tell me about the character or message?

5. Step 3: Colours and Lighting Speak |

Colour is a powerful media tool. The SpeedFlex ad uses a deliberate palette: deep midnight blue for the sky, blazing neon orange for the shoe accents and the slogan, and sharp white contrasts. Blue is often associated with calm, depth and technology, while orange suggests energy, urgency and youth. The lighting is high-contrast, with the shoe appearing to emit its own glow. This communicates that the product is not just an accessory but a source of power. The dark background also makes the bright elements stand out, a technique called ‘colour pop’ that grabs attention quickly.

Think of a chocolate bar wrapper or a game cover. Usually red and yellow are used because they stimulate appetite or excitement. Colour psychology is everywhere in media. Next time you see an advert, ask: what mood do the colours create, and why did the designer choose those exact shades?

6. Step 4: Characters and Representation |

Representation is about how people, groups and ideas are shown. The SpeedFlex ad features a lone teenage boy. He is athletic, wearing modern sports gear, and his facial expression is focused and determined. He is not smiling casually; he looks like he is pushing through limits. This representation links the product with values such as determination, independence and peak performance. There is no sign of struggle, only a sleek, almost superhuman leap. The boy is represented as an aspirational figure for the audience to admire and perhaps want to be like.

However, we must also think critically: does this advert show a balanced view of young people? It focuses on only one type of body and one gender, which might exclude other potential customers or create an unrealistic ideal. Good analysis always notices both the intended representation and what is left out.

7. Step 5: The Power of Font and Slogan |

The words and the way they look – typography – carry meaning. ‘Unleash Your Speed’ is written in italic, sans-serif capitals that slant forward, visually mimicking speed. The verb ‘Unleash’ suggests something wild and powerful is being released from inside the wearer. This is far more exciting than ‘run faster’. The brand name SpeedFlex uses a metallic gradient and sharp, aerodynamic letter shapes. The name itself is a blend of ‘speed’ and ‘flexibility’, promising both quickness and comfort. All these choices have been carefully made by a graphic designer to embed a message of high-tech performance.

When you write about language in media, remember to use the word ‘connotations’. For example, the word ‘unleash’ has connotations of freedom and raw power. Always link specific words back to the overall message the brand wants to send.

8. Step 6: Identifying the Target Audience |

The target audience is the group of people a media product is mainly designed for. For SpeedFlex, the primary audience is likely teenagers and young adults aged 12 to 20, especially those interested in sport, street fashion and urban culture. We can infer this from the age of the model, the vibrant colour choices and the magazine context. The secondary audience might be parents buying for their sporty children. The advert appeals to the audience’s desire for self-improvement, belonging to a ‘cool’ tribe and gaining confidence. It suggests that wearing the shoes might unlock hidden potential.

A useful statement in your analysis could be: ‘The primary target audience is active teenage boys because the model mirrors their age and the activity shown is aspirational yet achievable. However, the use of gender-neutral colours and a universal message of speed also broadens the appeal.’

9. Step 7: Putting It All Together – Writing an Analysis |

Now we will combine the parts into a coherent paragraph, just like you would write in an assessment. Here is an example:

‘The SpeedFlex print advertisement uses a dynamic low-angle medium shot to construct the teenage runner as a powerful, almost superhuman figure. The background is blurred through shallow depth of field, directing the viewer’s eye immediately to the sharply focused shoe, which glows in neon orange. This colour choice connotes energy and urgency, contrasting with the calm midnight blue sky to create a futuristic mood. The slogan ‘Unleash Your Speed’ appears in forward-slanting capitals, reinforcing the theme of motion and the idea that the product unlocks inner power. The representation focuses on a lone, athletic male, which appeals to a target audience of sporty teenagers seeking to stand out, but it may also limit the advert’s inclusivity. Overall, the ad sends a clear message: wearing SpeedFlex is about transformation and peak performance.’

Notice how this paragraph uses evidence (description of image) and then explains the effect or meaning, all flowing logically. Use this structure: point, evidence, explanation.

10. Common Pitfalls and Top Tips |

Many students jump straight to judgement, saying ‘This advert is good’ without explaining why using media language. Avoid empty praise. Instead, always ground your comments in specific details from the text. Another mistake is only describing and not analysing – remember to explain what effect each choice has on the audience. Also, don’t forget to name the techniques correctly (low angle, sans-serif, colour connotation). Finally, keep your writing organised, and always check that your analysis links back to the key question or concept.

Top tip: practise by talking through an advert with a friend or family member. When you can explain the media language out loud, writing it down becomes much easier. Also, use a highlighter when planning: pick out colours, camera, words and representations on a printed copy.

11. Your Turn: Try Another Ad |

Now it is your turn to become the analyst. Below is a short description of a second fictional advert for a concert film called ‘Echoes in the Dark’. Read the description, then use the steps we practised to write your own paragraph.

The advert shows a microphone on a dark stage, with a single spot light casting a long shadow. The shadow forms the shape of a wolf howling. The background is smoky purple. At the bottom, in a thin, elegant white font, the tagline reads: ‘Some voices never fade.’ The date and cinema location are in gold text. No human face is shown.

Consider: what is represented through the wolf shadow? How does lighting create mood? Why might the designer choose not to show the artist’s face? How does the font and slogan attract a young music fan audience? Write a short analysis using the point, evidence, explanation structure.
