1. Understanding the Case Study Approach |

A case study in physical education is an in-depth examination of an individual athlete or a specific sporting situation. You will look at their current fitness levels, performance goals, and the barriers they face. By gathering information, you can make evidence-based recommendations to help them improve.

To analyse a case study, you need to follow a logical sequence: identify the performer’s profile, collect relevant test data, interpret the results against normative standards, identify strengths and areas for improvement, and apply training principles to design a personal exercise programme.

This approach mirrors what coaches and sports scientists do. As a Year 7 student, you will focus on basic fitness tests, the FITT principle, and SMART goal setting. The case studies in this article will guide you through each step.

2. Case Study 1: Tom’s Football Challenge |

Meet Tom, a 12-year-old boy who loves playing football. He plays as a midfielder for his school team but often feels tired by the second half of the match. His coach notices that Tom struggles to keep up with faster opponents and lacks the energy to sprint back when defending.

Tom wants to improve his overall fitness so he can play a full match without getting exhausted. He has agreed to take a series of standard fitness tests. The results will help us understand his current level of health-related and skill-related fitness.

The table below shows Tom’s test scores alongside the norms for boys his age. We will use this information as the starting point for our case study analysis.

Below Average (2100 m is good) 低于平均(2100米为良好)
Sit and Reach (flexibility) 坐位体前屈(柔韧性) 10 cm 10 厘米 Below Average (15 cm is average) 低于平均(15厘米为平均)
Below Average (17.5 s is good) 低于平均(17.5秒为良好)

These results highlight key areas where Tom can improve. The most obvious weakness is his cardiovascular endurance, which explains why he tires quickly during matches. His flexibility and agility are also below average, which may affect his ability to change direction smoothly and avoid injury.

3. Analysing Fitness Test Results |

When interpreting fitness test data, it is essential to compare an individual’s scores against normative data for their age and gender. This allows you to classify each result as excellent, good, average, below average, or poor.

For Tom, the Cooper Run score indicates poor cardiovascular endurance. In football, this means his heart and lungs struggle to deliver enough oxygen to his working muscles for a sustained period. Improving this component will help him maintain a higher work rate throughout the whole match.

His agility test result shows that he is slower at changing direction. As a midfielder, he frequently needs to turn, dodge opponents, and accelerate into space. Below-average agility could put him at a disadvantage when reacting to quick changes in play.

Flexibility is another concern. Poor flexibility in the hamstrings and lower back, which the sit and reach test measures, can restrict movement range and increase the risk of muscle strains. Tom would benefit from regular stretching exercises.

His speed and muscular endurance are currently within the average range, but a football midfielder still needs to develop these further to compete at a higher level. These components will be part of his well-rounded training programme.

4. Applying the FITT Principle | 应用FITT原则

The FITT principle is a simple yet powerful tool for designing an effective training programme. FITT stands for Frequency, Intensity, Time, and Type. By adjusting these four variables, you can target specific fitness components and ensure gradual improvement.

  • Frequency (频率): How often you train each week. For aerobic improvement, 3–5 sessions per week are recommended.
  • Intensity (强度): How hard you work during training. This can be measured using heart rate or the rate of perceived exertion (RPE).
  • Time (时间): The duration of each training session. For cardiovascular endurance, aim for at least 20–30 minutes of continuous activity.
  • Type (类型): The kind of exercise you do. This must match the fitness component you want to improve, such as running, cycling, or circuit training for endurance.

For Tom’s cardiovascular weakness, we will prescribe a running programme. The initial FITT plan might be: Frequency – 3 times per week; Intensity – 65–75% of his maximum heart rate; Time – 20 minutes of continuous jogging; Type – steady-paced running on a football pitch or running track.

To calculate his target heart rate zone, we first need to estimate his maximum heart rate. A common formula is: Maximum Heart Rate = 220 − Age. For Tom, that is 220 − 12 = 208 bpm (beats per minute). His lower target zone at 65% is 208 × 0.65 ≈ 135 bpm, and the upper limit at 75% is 208 × 0.75 ≈ 156 bpm.

Target Heart Rate Zone = 135 – 156 bpm

Tom should monitor his pulse during exercise and stay within this zone to safely build his aerobic base.

5. Designing a Cardiovascular Training Plan |

A long-term cardiovascular training plan must follow the principle of progressive overload. This means gradually increasing the demands on the body to continue making fitness gains. The FITT variables should be adjusted every two to three weeks.

Below is a sample 6-week starter programme for Tom. It combines steady running with one agility-focused session to address his secondary weakness. Each week, the training volume or intensity is increased slightly.

Week (周) Session 1 (周一) Session 2 (周三) Session 3 (周五)
1-2 20 min jog (135-156 bpm) Agility drills (ladder, cones) 15 min 20 min jog + 5 min stretching
3-4 25 min jog Agility + 10 min bodyweight circuit 25 min interval run (1 min faster, 2 min jog) × 5
5-6 30 min run with pace variation Agility + 15 min core workout 30 min fartlek (speed play) on pitch

The agility sessions will include cone drills, ladder exercises, and shuttle runs. These help improve foot speed, coordination, and the ability to change direction rapidly – all crucial for a midfielder. Combining endurance work with agility training creates a more balanced athletic profile.

As the weeks progress, Tom should also continue to stretch after every session. Holding each stretch for 20–30 seconds will help improve his sit and reach score over time and reduce injury risk.

6. Nutrition for Better Performance |

No training plan is complete without proper nutrition. The food Tom eats provides the fuel for his training sessions and matches. A balanced diet should include carbohydrates for energy, proteins for muscle repair, and healthy fats for overall health.

Carbohydrates such as wholemeal pasta, brown rice, and fruits should make up the largest portion of a young athlete’s plate, especially on match days. Protein from lean meats, eggs, beans, and dairy supports the growth and repair of muscles stressed during exercise.

Hydration is equally important. Tom should drink water regularly throughout the day and aim for 500–600 ml of water two to three hours before a match. During exercise, small sips every 15–20 minutes help maintain performance. Avoid sugary fizzy drinks, as they can cause energy spikes and crashes.

A simple pre-match meal could be a chicken and salad wholemeal wrap eaten 2–3 hours before kick-off. After training, a recovery snack such as a banana with a glass of milk provides both carbohydrates and protein to replenish energy stores and aid repair.

By combining a structured training plan with sound nutrition, Tom will have a much better chance of improving his endurance and feeling stronger on the pitch.

7. Skill-Related Fitness: Agility and Speed |

While health-related fitness keeps the body functioning well, skill-related fitness components are directly linked to performance in sports like football. Tom’s test results pointed to agility as a key area to develop, but speed and coordination also play a big role.

Agility is the ability to change the direction of the body quickly and under control. For a midfielder, this means being able to turn sharply to evade a tackle or to accelerate into open space. Speed, on the other hand, is the ability to move the whole body or a body part quickly. Sprinting to reach a through ball demands both speed and acceleration.

Drills to enhance agility for Tom include: cone-weaving runs, T-drills, and ladder footwork. These activities force the body to adjust rapidly, improving the connection between the nervous system and muscles.
