1. The Mise-en-Scène Foundation Formula |

Mise-en-Scène (a French term meaning ‘placed in the scene’) is the starting point for all visual analysis. It produces meaning through the deliberate combination of five elements. The formula connects these elements to show how a director constructs a frame to communicate specific ideas about character and mood. You can use this formula to systematically describe everything within the frame and explain its combined effect on the audience.

The Formula:

Meaning = Setting + Lighting + Costume + Props + Figure Expression

  • Setting (场景): The location can be a real place or a constructed studio set. A deserted, rainy street at night (Setting) immediately communicates isolation or danger before any character appears.

  • Lighting (灯光): Low-key lighting creates deep shadows and suspense, often used in horror. High-key lighting is bright and even, used in comedies and adverts to suggest happiness and transparency.

  • Costume (服装): Clothing instantly tells us about a character’s personality, era, and status. A torn, dirty costume (Costume) paired with a luxury apartment (Setting) creates a deliberate visual clash that sparks questions in the audience’s mind.

2. The Shot Scale Sequencing Theorem |

Shot scale refers to how much of the subject is visible within the frame. The choice of camera distance is never random; it dictates how close we feel to a character emotionally. The sequencing theorem states that a classic scene builds intimacy in a predictable order, moving from establishing context to revealing private emotion. By memorising this progression, you can both predict and analyse the emotional arc of any sequence.

The Theorem:

Emotional Intensity ∝ 1 ÷ Shot Scale Distance

  • Extreme Long Shot (ELS) / Establishing Shot: Shows a vast landscape or cityscape. The human figure is tiny or absent. Primary function: Context and scale. The audience asks, ‘Where are we?’

  • Long Shot (LS): The full human figure is visible from head to toe, with space above and below. Function: Shows action and body language. Reveals how a character physically navigates their environment.

  • Mid Shot (MS): Frames the human figure from the waist up. Function: Dialogue and interaction. This is the most common shot scale in television because it mimics the distance we stand from friends during a conversation.

  • Close-Up (CU): Frames the face, or a specific object, filling the screen. Function: Emotion and significance. A close-up of a hand trembling (CU) forces the audience to share the character’s fear.

3. The Continuity Editing Invisibility Rule |

Continuity editing is the dominant style of cutting in mainstream film and television. Its primary goal is to make the edit so smooth that the audience forgets they are watching a constructed sequence of separate shots. This rule states that the technical process must remain invisible to maintain narrative immersion. When you spot a jarring continuity error, the ‘invisibility’ is broken, reminding you that you are watching a manufactured product.

The Rule:

Smooth Narrative Flow = Shot A + Shot B + Seamless Visual Match

  • Shot / Reverse Shot: Used for conversations. Camera cuts between two characters, typically over one character’s shoulder to show the other speaking. The audience constructs the space mentally, imagining the two people facing each other.

  • Eyeline Match: Shot A shows a character looking off-screen. Shot B must show what they are looking at from an angle that matches their gaze direction. If a character looks up, the next shot typically presents a high angle view of the object.

  • Match on Action: An action begun in Shot A (e.g., a character opening a door) is completed seamlessly in Shot B, but from a different camera angle. This masks the cut by keeping the viewer’s eye focused on the continuous movement.

4. The Denotation and Connotation Decoding Equation |

This semiotic equation, adapted from Roland Barthes’ theory, is essential for reading media texts beyond their literal surface. Denotation is the objective ‘what is there’, and connotation is the cultural ‘what it means’. An advert for a luxury watch does not just sell a time-telling device (Denotation); it sells status, success, and male elegance (Connotation). Media producers carefully select every visual sign to trigger specific connotative meanings in the target audience.

The Equation:

Signifier (Image) + Signified (Concept) = Sign (Total Meaning)

  • Red Rose Signifier: A visual image of a red rose on a Valentine’s Day card. The denotation is simply a red flower with a green stem and thorns.

  • Red Rose Connotation: The image signifies passion, romance, and deep love. Depending on the context (e.g., a blood-red background), it could connote danger or mortality.

  • Decoding Practice: When analysing a film poster, list the key signifiers (props, colours, facial expressions). For each, note the denotation first, then identify the culturally specific connotations they evoke in you.

5. The Todorov Equilibrium Disruption Theorem |

Tzvetan Todorov proposed that most narrative plots follow a three-part structure that moves from a stable state, through chaos, to a new stability. This theorem is a powerful tool for mapping the story arc of any film or television drama. Understanding this pattern helps you predict narrative beats and analyse why a story feels satisfying or unsettling when it deviates from the expected resolution.

The Theorem:

Narrative = Equilibrium → Disruption → New Equilibrium

  • Stage 1: Equilibrium (The Setup): The story begins with a balanced, harmonious world. Characters are going about their daily lives. In a superhero film, this is often the hero’s ordinary, often mundane, civilian identity.

  • Stage 2: Disruption (The Problem): An event occurs that shatters the peace. This is the ‘inciting incident’. A villain emerges, a disaster strikes, or a mystery is discovered. This disruption drives the entire plot forward.

  • Stage 3: New Equilibrium (The Resolution): The conflict is resolved through a struggle, and a new balance is restored. The world is not identical to the start; characters have changed and grown. This new normal closes the narrative loop.

6. The Propp Character Archetype Formula |

Vladimir Propp analysed Russian fairy tales and identified eight recurring character types, which he called ‘spheres of action’. These archetypes form a formula for understanding character function in narrative media. A single character may occupy multiple Proppian roles (e.g., the Donor might also be the Helper), but the functions themselves remain distinct. Use this formula to categorise characters in any genre, from fantasy films to news reports.

The Formula:

Plot Function = Hero + Villain + Princess + Dispatcher + Donor + Helper + Father + False Hero

  • Hero and Villain (英雄与反派): The Hero seeks something, often to restore the equilibrium. The Villain actively opposes the Hero and creates the disruption. Their direct struggle forms the central conflict.

  • The Dispatcher and The Donor (派遣者与捐献者): The Dispatcher sends the Hero on the quest (e.g., a police chief assigning a case). The Donor prepares the Hero or gives them a magical object, often after a test.

  • The Princess and The False Hero (公主与伪英雄): The Princess is often the reward or the object sought, but can also be a character in need of rescue. The False Hero appears to be good but is ultimately revealed as a rival seeking credit.

7. The Camera Angle Power Index |

The vertical position of the camera relative to the subject creates a direct visual relationship of power. This index provides a simple law: the camera angle assigns status to the subject within the frame. A director can make the same actor appear commanding or vulnerable simply by repositioning the camera. Recognising these angles allows you to decode the unspoken hierarchy between characters in any scene.

The Index:

Perceived Power = Vertical Camera Position relative to Eye-Level

  • Low Angle (仰拍): Camera looks up at the subject. The subject appears tall, dominant, powerful, and intimidating. Villains are often shot from a low angle to make the audience feel small and threatened.

  • High Angle (俯拍): Camera looks down at the subject. The subject appears small, weak, vulnerable, or trapped. A character delivering bad news might be framed from a high angle to visually diminish their authority.

  • Eye Level (平视): Camera is neutral, placed as if a person standing is viewing another. This creates a sense of equality and realism. It encourages the audience to connect with the subject as an equal.

8. The Genre Repertoire Recognition Theorem |

A genre is a type of media product defined by a shared ‘repertoire of elements’. This theorem states that an audience recognises a text as belonging to a specific genre when a critical mass of these expected elements is present. Producers use this repertoire as a creative short-hand, signalling to audiences what emotional experience to expect—fear in horror, laughter in a sitcom, or suspense in a thriller.

The Theorem:

Genre Identification = Sum of Iconography + Setting + Character Types + Narrative Pattern

  • Iconography (标志性符号): The physical objects and visual symbols associated with a genre. Spiders’ webs, full moons, and ancient books signal Gothic horror. Laser guns, spaceships, and alien planets signal Science Fiction.

  • Setting (场景): Specific locations help define genre. The ‘Wild West’ town with a saloon and sheriff’s office instantly identifies a Western. A high-tech laboratory with glowing liquids signals a Sci-Fi thriller.

  • Narrative Pattern (叙事模式): Genres have expected storylines. A romantic comedy follows a ‘meet-cute’, obstacle, and reunion template. A detective genre follows a crime, investigation, and revelation template.

9. The Sound Bridge Storytelling Theorem |

Sound in media is divided into two tracks: diegetic (originating inside the story world) and non-diegetic (coming from outside the story world, like a musical score). This theorem explains how sound transitions between scenes, known as a sound bridge, create narrative and emotional links. A sound bridge can smooth a disruptive visual cut or deliberately create an unsettling clash by juxtaposing contradictory audio and video.

The Theorem:

Scene Transition Meaning = Visual Cut + Audio Continuity (Sound Bridge)

  • Diegetic Sound (剧情声): Any sound the characters can hear: dialogue, footsteps, a ringing phone, music playing from a car radio. It establishes the physical reality and atmosphere of the location.

  • Non-Diegetic Sound (非剧情声): Sound added for the audience only: voice-over narration, a dramatic orchestral score. It manipulates our emotions directly. Sad music over a happy face makes the smile seem tragic.

  • The Sound Bridge in Action: We hear the next scene’s dialogue or music while still visually in the current scene. This links two separate spaces or times, preparing the audience for a shift in location without jarring discontinuity.

10. The Lighting Direction Mood Vector |

Beyond simply being bright or dark (high-key or low-key), the specific direction from which light hits a subject creates a ‘mood vector’. This concept treats light as a directional force that sculpts meaning on a character’s face. The angle of the key light (the main light source) is a precise technical choice that can make a character appear mysterious, glamorous, or disturbed. Mastering this vector allows you to read the subtle emotional language of light.

The Vector:

Facial Expression Readability = Key Light Angle relative to Camera Axis

  • Front Lighting (正面光): Light source shines directly onto the subject’s face, flattening out shadows. Produces a clear, open, glamorous look often used in beauty adverts. It minimises texture and can erase small details of character.

  • Side Lighting (侧光): Light hits the subject from one side, casting half the face in deep shadow. This ‘split lighting’ suggests a dual personality, internal conflict, or mystery. A detective with a dark past is frequently lit this way.

  • Under Lighting (底光): Light comes from below the subject’s chin. This distorts the natural shadows of the face, making even a familiar face look sinister, grotesque, or threatening. It is a staple of horror genre lighting.

11. The Audience Demographics and Psychographics Segmentation Model |

Media producers do not create content for ‘everyone’. They target specific audience segments using two intersecting models. The Demographic Model categorises by external, measurable factors like age and gender. The Psychographic Model categorises by internal values, attitudes, and lifestyle. A successful media text is designed with a clear ‘Target Audience’ profile based on a blend of both models to ensure it appeals directly to the intended consumer group.

The Model:

Target Audience Profile = Demographics (Who they are) + Psychographics (Why they buy)

  • Demographics: The ‘Who’: This includes quantifiable data: Age range (e.g., 13-18 years), Gender, Location, Occupation, and Income bracket. A magazine for teenagers uses a different demographic profile than a newspaper for financial investors.

  • Psychographics: The ‘Why’: This explores the inner life: Values, Interests, Hobbies, and Attitudes. A target audience might be described as ‘Adventurers’ who value experiences over possessions, or ‘Reformers’ who seek ethical, eco-friendly products.

  • Model Application: A horror film’s demographic might be Males, 16-24. Its psychographic might be ‘Thrill Seekers’ who enjoy intense sensory stimulation and social experiences. The marketing campaign will directly address these traits.

12. The Media Language Rule of Thirds Composition Theorem |

Composition is the arrangement of visual elements within the frame. The Rule of Thirds is the foundational grid for creating dynamic and interesting images. This theorem posits that placing key subjects along imaginary lines and their intersections creates more tension, energy, and narrative interest than simply centering the subject. Frame analysis using this grid allows you to decode why a specific shot feels balanced, off-kilter, or artistically deliberate.

The Theorem:

Visual Impact = Subject Placement ÷ (Horizontal 1/3 Lines + Vertical 1/3 Lines)

  • The Grid (网格): Imagine two equally spaced horizontal lines and two equally spaced vertical lines across your image, creating nine equal rectangles. The four points where the lines intersect are ‘power points’.

  • Subject Placement (主体位置): Instead of placing a person’s eyes in the dead centre of the frame, placing them along the top horizontal line gives them visual ‘breathing room’ and authority. An object on a left or right intersect point looks visually balanced by the empty space on the opposite side.

  • Narrative Implications: A character framed on the extreme edge of the grid, looking away from the empty space (short-sighting), appears trapped or anxious. A character walking into the open space has a positive, forward-moving energy.
