Interdisciplinary Integrated Question Training |

📚 Interdisciplinary Integrated Question Training |

As part of the Year 7 OCR Psychology course, students are introduced to the scientific study of mind and behaviour. This interdisciplinary training unit helps you blend psychological knowledge with skills from mathematics, English, science and sociology. You will learn how to identify variables, calculate averages, draw graphs, apply psychological theories to data, evaluate ethical issues, and write research conclusions. Each task mirrors the style of OCR integrated assessments, where a single scenario may ask you to use numerical, written and analytical skills together. The aim is to build confidence in tackling questions that cross traditional subject boundaries.

1. Identifying Variables in Experiments |

Every psychological experiment begins with variables. An independent variable (IV) is the factor the researcher deliberately changes or manipulates. A dependent variable (DV) is the factor that is measured to see if it has been affected. Control variables are factors kept the same to make the test fair. For example, in a study testing whether background music improves memory for a word list, the IV is the presence or absence of music, the DV is the number of words recalled, and control variables could include the volume of music, the length of the word list and the time given to study.

Read the following study: ‘A psychologist wanted to find out if the colour of paper affects how well students answer maths questions. Group A had white paper, Group B had light blue paper. After completing ten questions, the number of correct answers was recorded.’ Now identify the IV, DV and suggest one control variable.

Worked answer: IV: colour of the paper (white vs light blue). DV: number of correct answers out of ten. One control variable could be the difficulty of the maths questions, the time allowed, or making sure the room lighting is the same for both groups. By keeping these the same, we can be more confident that any difference in scores is due to the paper colour.

2. Descriptive Statistics: Mean, Median, Mode |

Psychologists often collect numerical data and need to summarise it using measures of central tendency. The mean is the arithmetic average, found by adding all scores and dividing by the number of scores. The median is the middle value when data are ordered. The mode is the most frequent value. Each measure can tell a different story about the results.

Mean = (Sum of all scores) ÷ Number of scores

Imagine a researcher recorded these words recalled by five participants in the music condition: 8, 12, 10, 8, 12. The mean is (8+12+10+8+12) ÷ 5 = 50 ÷ 5 = 10. The median, from smallest to largest (8,8,10,12,12), is 10. The mode is both 8 and 12 because each appears twice. This is a bimodal data set. Being able to calculate and compare these averages helps you decide which music condition led to better recall.

3. Constructing and Interpreting Graphs |

Visual representation of data is a key skill. Bar charts are often used to display the mean scores of different conditions. The independent variable goes on the x-axis (horizontal) and the dependent variable on the y-axis (vertical). Always label axes, give the chart a title, and use an appropriate scale. Interpreting a graph means spotting the pattern: which condition produced the highest mean? Is the difference large or small? Does the bar chart show a clear trend?

Below is a table of mean recall scores from a study on colour and memory. Use the data to sketch a bar chart in your mind and answer the questions that follow.

Condition Mean number of words recalled
Red paper 7.2
White paper 10.5
Blue paper 9.8

Questions: Which condition has the highest recall? What conclusion might the researcher draw? If you wanted to make the difference look bigger in a bar chart without changing the data, what scale could you choose? (Hint: starting the y-axis from a number above zero could exaggerate the gap, but it is not always fair.)

4. Applying Memory Models to Data |

The multi-store model of memory can help explain experimental results. According to this model, information flows from sensory memory to short-term memory (STM) to long-term memory (LTM) if rehearsed. When participants recall words at the start of a list (primacy effect) and at the end (recency effect), the pattern supports the idea of separate STM and LTM stores. You can use these concepts to interpret why a music group might recall more words in the middle of a list if music helped them rehearse items into LTM.

In a word-list recall study, the mean number of words recalled from the first five positions was 4.2, the middle five was 2.8, and the last five was 4.0. Explain this pattern using the multi-store model.

The high recall of first words (primacy) suggests that these items were rehearsed and moved into LTM. The high recall of last words (recency) suggests they were still in STM when recall began. The middle items received less rehearsal and were likely displaced before they could be transferred to LTM, so they are recalled less. This pattern is exactly what the model predicts.

5. Evaluating Research Ethics |

Psychological studies must follow ethical guidelines to protect participants. The British Psychological Society (BPS) sets out principles such as informed consent, right to withdraw, protection from harm, deception and confidentiality. In an OCR integrated question, you might be asked to evaluate whether a study is ethical, suggesting both strengths and improvements. Always state the ethical issue clearly, give evidence from the scenario, and propose a realistic solution that would not ruin the research aim.

Read the scenario: ‘A teacher wanted to find out how stress affects test scores. She told her Year 7 class that a surprise test would count towards their final grade, when in fact it was only a practice. Students were very anxious, and some asked to leave but were told they had to stay.’ Identify two ethical issues and suggest how each could be addressed.

The first issue is deception: the teacher misled students about the real purpose and consequences of the test. To solve this, the teacher could have given a general consent form before the study, explaining that the test was part of a research on classroom mood without revealing full details until after the study (debriefing). The second issue is the right to withdraw: students were not allowed to leave even when distressed. The teacher should have clearly stated that participation was voluntary and that anyone could withdraw at any time without penalty.

6. Linking Social Influence to Research |

Conformity and obedience are core topics in social influence. Asch’s line-judgement experiment showed that people sometimes conform to a group even when the answer is clearly wrong. When you read a study that involves group pressure, you need to connect the findings to these concepts. Use key terms such as normative social influence (wanting to fit in) and informational social influence (believing others are right).

A researcher asked a confederate to deliberately give wrong answers to easy maths problems while standing in a group of Year 7 students. The real participant often went along with the wrong answer. Identify the social influence being studied and explain why the participant might conform using two types of social influence.

This study is about conformity under group pressure. The participant may show normative social influence because they want to be accepted by the group and avoid looking silly. They may also be affected by informational social influence if they start to doubt their own maths ability and genuinely believe the confederate’s answer is correct, especially if the confederate is confident.

7. Comparing Studies Critically |

Being able to compare two studies is a valuable interdisciplinary skill. You might be asked to identify similarities and differences in terms of method, variables, sample, ecological validity and reliability. A comparison table can help you organise your thinking before writing a paragraph. Always back up points with evidence from the studies and explain why a difference matters.

Compare the following two memory studies. Study A: laboratory experiment with Year 7 students learning word lists in silence or with instrumental music, measuring recall. Study B: field experiment in a real classroom where the teacher played music during a spelling test and compared scores to a silent class. Focus on ecological validity and control.

Study A has higher control because extraneous variables such as lighting, noise and timing can be kept constant in the laboratory. This makes it easier to establish cause and effect. However, its ecological validity is lower because the task of memorising word lists does not reflect everyday school learning. Study B has higher ecological validity as it took place in a natural classroom with a realistic task. However, control is lower – other noises or different teaching styles could have influenced the results. This means we can be less certain that the music alone caused any difference in scores.

8. Writing a Conclusion and Evaluation |

A strong conclusion summarises the main finding and links it back to the aim. It does not simply repeat the results but interprets what they mean in terms of the psychological question. An evaluation goes further by discussing strengths, limitations, and suggestions for future research. In an integrated question, you may need to write a short paragraph that combines both.

For a study that found students who slept 9 hours before a memory test recalled more words than those who slept 6 hours, write a conclusion and one evaluative point about sample size.

Conclusion: The findings suggest that longer sleep duration is associated with better word recall, supporting the idea that sleep plays a role in memory consolidation. This aligns with the aim of investigating the link between sleep and memory. Evaluation: However, the study used only 20 students from one school, which is a small sample. This limits generalisability, meaning we cannot be sure that the same pattern would appear in all Year 7 students or in different schools. A larger and more varied sample would make the conclusion stronger.

9. Using Quantitative and Qualitative Data |

Research methods produce two broad types of data. Quantitative data is numerical, such as test scores, reaction times or rating scales. Qualitative data is descriptive, such as interview transcripts, open-ended survey answers or diary entries. In an integrated task, you may need to decide which type is more suitable for a given research question and explain the advantage. Quantitative data is easy to compare and analyse statistically, while qualitative data provides depth and insights into thoughts and feelings.

A psychologist wants to understand what Year 7 students find stressful about school. She could give a questionnaire with a stress scale (quantitative) or ask students to write a paragraph describing a stressful day (qualitative). Suggest one advantage of each approach.

Quantitative advantage: The stress scale provides numerical scores that can easily be averaged and compared across year groups, helping spot trends quickly. Qualitative advantage: The written paragraphs allow students to express their personal experiences in their own words, revealing specific causes of stress – like friendship issues or exam pressure – that a number cannot capture. Many real-world studies combine both to get a full picture.

10. Integrative Scenario Challenge |

Now put your skills together. Read the full scenario and tackle a multi-part question that mirrors an OCR Year 7 assessment.

Scenario: ‘A researcher investigated whether silent reading or reading aloud improves memory for a story in Year 7 students. Forty students were split into two groups. Group 1 read a 300-word story silently once; Group 2 read the same story aloud once. Immediately after, all students wrote down as many details as they could remember. The mean number of correct details was 14.2 for Group 1 and 18.6 for Group 2. The researcher then interviewed a few students from the aloud group, who said they felt more focused when reading aloud.’

Questions: (a) Identify the IV and DV. (b) Calculate the range if the highest score in Group 2 was 25 and the lowest was 10. (c) Explain one ethical guideline the researcher would have needed to consider. (d) Use a memory model to suggest why reading aloud led to better recall. (e) Identify one piece of qualitative data and explain how it adds to the quantitative finding.

Answers: (a) IV: reading condition (silent vs aloud); DV: number of correct story details recalled. (b) Range = 25 – 10 = 15. (c) Informed consent: the researcher must tell students and their parents the purpose of the study and what they would be asked to do, gaining permission before participation. (d) Reading aloud may have acted as a form of elaborative rehearsal, encoding the story more deeply into long-term memory. It also may have helped maintain attention, keeping information active in short-term memory. (e) The interview quotes about feeling ‘more focused’ are qualitative data. They help explain why the aloud group scored higher: not just the act of vocalising, but the increased focus it created. This adds depth to the numerical difference in means.
