1. What is Psychology? |

Psychology is defined as the scientific study of the mind and behaviour. The term itself comes from two Greek words: ‘psyche’ (meaning soul, mind, or breath) and ‘logos’ (meaning study or knowledge). Unlike everyday speculation about why people do things, psychology relies on empirical evidence – information gathered through systematic observation, measurement, and experimentation. Psychologists work in many settings, such as schools, hospitals, businesses, and research laboratories, investigating topics that range from how we perceive colours to why we fall in love.

At SQA level, psychology is taught as a social science, meaning students learn to design studies, analyse data, and evaluate theories critically. You will discover that psychology overlaps with biology, sociology, and even philosophy, making it a fascinating and ever-evolving subject. By the end of this course, you should feel comfortable discussing concepts like ‘hypothesis’, ‘variable’, and ‘ethical guidelines’.

3. The Scientific Approach to Mind and Behaviour |

Psychologists follow a scientific process when investigating questions. They begin with a theory – a general explanation of a phenomenon – and then derive a specific, testable prediction called a hypothesis. Next, they design a study to collect data, ensuring they control any extraneous variables that might interfere with the results. After gathering the data, they use statistical analysis to determine whether the findings support the hypothesis. Finally, they draw conclusions and often publish their work so that other researchers can replicate the study.

This process is called the empirical method. It ensures that psychology is not based on opinion or guesswork but on evidence that can be observed and measured. For example, if a psychologist wants to know whether background music improves concentration, they will not simply ask people what they think; they will set up an experiment where one group works with music and another without, and then compare the results objectively.

4. Key Research Methods in Psychology |

Different research questions require different methods. The main ones you will encounter in your SQA studies include experiments, observations, questionnaires, interviews, and case studies. Each method has its own strengths and limitations, and a good psychologist selects the most appropriate tool for the question at hand. The table below summarises these methods to help you begin comparing them.

Method Description Strengths Weaknesses
Experiment Manipulates an independent variable to see its effect on a dependent variable while controlling other conditions. High control; can establish cause and effect. May be artificial; risk of demand characteristics.
Observation Watching and recording behaviour in a natural or controlled setting without interference. High ecological validity if natural; records spontaneous behaviour. Observer bias; cannot explain why behaviour occurs.
Questionnaire A set of written questions used to collect self-report data from many participants. Quick to administer; can reach large samples. Social desirability bias; poorly worded questions may mislead.
Interview A conversation where the researcher asks questions to explore participants’ thoughts and feelings. Rich, detailed data; clarifies misunderstandings. Time-consuming; interviewer effects can skew answers.
Case Study In-depth investigation of a single individual, group, or event over time. Provides unique, detailed insight; useful for rare phenomena. Cannot generalise findings; subject to researcher bias.

When you read about a psychological study, always ask yourself which method was used and whether its strengths and weaknesses might have influenced the conclusions. For instance, a laboratory experiment offers tight control but may not reflect real life, while a naturalistic observation captures genuine behaviour but makes it hard to pinpoint exact causes.

5. Ethics: Protecting Participants |

In psychology, ethics refers to the moral principles that guide research. Because psychological studies often involve human or animal participants, researchers must follow strict ethical guidelines to protect their wellbeing. Before a study begins, participants should give informed consent, meaning they understand what the study involves and agree to take part voluntarily. They also have the right to withdraw at any time without penalty. After the study, researchers must debrief participants, explaining the true purpose and addressing any discomfort.

Other key principles include confidentiality, where personal data is kept private, and protection from harm, ensuring no physical or psychological distress occurs. The British Psychological Society (BPS) provides a code of ethics that all UK-based researchers, including SQA students planning their own investigations, must follow.

6. Understanding Variables and Hypotheses |

A variable is anything that can change or vary within a study. The independent variable (IV) is the factor that the researcher deliberately changes or manipulates. The dependent variable (DV) is the factor that is measured; it is expected to change as a result of the manipulation. All other variables that might affect the DV must be controlled as much as possible; these are called extraneous or confounding variables. For example, if you were testing whether sleep affects memory, the IV would be the amount of sleep, the DV would be memory test scores, and factors like noise or caffeine intake would need to be controlled.

After identifying the variables, you write a hypothesis – a clear, precise testable statement predicting the outcome. Hypotheses can be directional (predicting a specific direction of difference, e.g., ‘Students who sleep 8 hours will score higher on a memory test than those who sleep 4 hours’) or non-directional (predicting a difference but not its direction, e.g., ‘There will be a difference in memory test scores between students sleeping 8 hours and those sleeping 4 hours’). In SQA assessments, you will be expected to write hypotheses in the correct format.

7. Introduction to Data Analysis in Psychology |

Once data has been collected, psychologists must organise and interpret it. Descriptive statistics help summarise the main features of a data set. The most common measures are central tendency – including the mean, median, and mode – and measures of spread, such as the range. The mean is calculated by adding all the scores and dividing by the number of scores. The formula is:

M = (ΣX) / N

Where M stands for the mean, Σ is the Greek letter sigma meaning ‘sum of’, X represents each individual score, and N is the total number of scores. The median is the middle value when scores are arranged in order, and the mode is the most frequently occurring score. The range is the difference between the highest and lowest values and gives a simple indication of how spread out the data are.

Understanding these basic statistics will help you make sense of research findings and prepare you for the quantitative aspects of your SQA psychology course. Later, you will also learn to present data in bar charts, histograms, and scatterplots.

8. The Brain: Psychology Meets Biology |

Biological psychology examines how our brain, nervous system, and hormones influence our thoughts, emotions, and actions. The brain is divided into two hemispheres – left and right – and each hemisphere is further divided into four lobes: frontal (thinking, planning, personality), parietal (sensory information, spatial awareness), temporal (memory, hearing, language), and occipital (vision). These lobes do not work in isolation; they are connected by networks of neurons that communicate via electrical impulses and chemical messengers called neurotransmitters.

Even simple behaviours like waving your hand involve an astonishing coordination of brain regions. Familiarity with these biological structures will help you understand topics like memory, emotion, and mental health at a deeper level. In your SQA studies, you will link brain areas to specific functions and discuss how damage to certain regions, for example, can affect behaviour.

9. Memory: How We Encode, Store and Retrieve Information |

Memory is the process by which we take in, hold on to, and later use information. According to the multi-store model, there are three separate memory stores: sensory memory, short-term memory (STM), and long-term memory (LTM). Sensory memory holds a vast amount of sensory input for less than half a second. If we pay attention to this information, it moves into STM, where it can be kept for around 18-30 seconds through rehearsal. With deeper processing and elaboration, it can then be transferred into LTM, which has unlimited capacity and can last a lifetime.

Research into memory helps us improve our study techniques. For example, spaced repetition and retrieval practice are far more effective than simply re-reading your notes. As a Year 7 student, building good memory habits early will support you not only in psychology but across all subjects.

10. Social Influence: How Others Shape Our Behaviour |

Social influence looks at how the presence or actions of other people change what we think, feel, or do. Three major types are conformity, obedience, and bystander behaviour. Conformity occurs when we adjust our behaviour or opinions to match those of a group, as demonstrated in Solomon Asch’s line-judgment experiments, where many participants agreed with the group even when the group was obviously
