📚 Year 7 AQA Sociology: Quick Reference Handbook of Formulas and Theorems | Year 7 AQA

Welcome to your Year 7 AQA Sociology Quick Reference Handbook. Although sociology does not use mathematical formulas in the same way as physics or chemistry, we can still represent key sociological ideas as ‘formulas’ and ‘theorems’ to help you remember them. This handbook turns core concepts, processes, and structures into easy-to-remember models, equations, and diagrams. Use them to revise the building blocks of society, from socialisation and culture to inequality and research methods.

1. The Socialisation Equation |

The lifelong process of learning society’s norms, values and behaviours is called socialisation. It can be summed up in a simple sociological equation: S = P₁ + S₂. Here, P₁ stands for primary socialisation, which takes place in the family during early childhood. S₂ represents secondary socialisation, which happens later through school, peer groups and the media.

We can break down secondary socialisation even further: S₂ = E + P + M, where E is education, P is peer group, and M is mass media. Together these agents help shape who we become.

2. The Norms and Values Theorem |

Social order depends on shared rules. The Norms and Values Theorem states: Social Order = Shared Norms + Shared Values. Norms are unwritten rules of behaviour, such as queuing or saying ‘please’. Values are broader beliefs about what is good, such as honesty or respect.

When individuals follow norms and hold the same values, society functions smoothly. If these break down, sociologists talk about anomie – a state of normlessness studied by Emile Durkheim.

3. The Culture Formula |

Culture can be expressed as the sum of its parts: C = N + V + B + L. Here N stands for Norms, V for Values, B for Beliefs, and L for Language. Each element passes from one generation to the next through socialisation.

Language is particularly powerful because it shapes how we think and communicate. Values and beliefs give culture its character, while norms guide everyday behaviour. Together they create a unique way of life for any society.

4. The Social Stratification Model |

Sociologists describe inequality using a three‑tiered model: Upper Class + Middle Class + Working Class. This is not a strict mathematical equation, but a way of visualising how society is layered by wealth, occupation and income.

Large business owners, aristocrats Inherited wealth, high status, power
Middle 中层 Doctors, teachers, managers Professional qualifications, comfortable income
Working 工人 Factory workers, cleaners, retail staff Manual or routine work, lower pay

Some sociologists add an underclass at the bottom, while Marxists emphasise the conflict between the bourgeoisie (owners) and the proletariat (workers). The model reminds us that life chances – health, education and opportunities – are not equally distributed.

5. The Inequality Cycle Theorem |

Inequality is not a one‑time event; it often reproduces itself across generations. The Inequality Cycle Theorem can be visualised as a chain: Poverty → Poor Education → Low‑skill Jobs → Low Income → Poverty.

Children born into low‑income families may attend under‑funded schools, gain fewer qualifications and then enter low‑paid work. This makes it difficult to escape poverty, reinforcing social class divisions. Sociologists call this social reproduction.

6. The Agents of Socialisation Matrix |

Each agent of socialisation contributes differently. The matrix below summarises their main roles using a simple input–output idea: Agent × Exposure = Part of Identity.

Love, discipline, basic norms Language, manners, values
School 学校 Formal curriculum, hidden curriculum Knowledge, obedience, punctuality
Peers 同伴 Friendship, conformity pressure Style, slang, independence
Media 媒体 TV, internet, social media Body image, consumer habits, world views

The matrix shows that identity is not formed by a single source. Instead, overlapping influences combine to build our sense of self.

7. The Family Structure Types |

Families come in many forms. The formula for family diversity can be written as: All Families = Nuclear + Extended + Single‑parent + Reconstituted + Same‑sex parent + Lone‑person. No one type is ‘normal’ – sociologists study how they function.

  • Nuclear family: two parents and their children living together.
  • Extended family: relatives beyond the nuclear family, e.g., grandparents, living together or nearby.
  • Single‑parent family: one parent raising children, often after divorce or bereavement.
  • Reconstituted family: also called a stepfamily, formed when partners bring children from previous relationships.

In modern Britain, family diversity has increased. Sociologists like the Rapoports identified five types of diversity: organisational, cultural, social class, life‑stage and generational.

8. The Social Research Process Loop |

Sociologists follow a systematic process to investigate society. The Research Loop is: Research Question → Method Choice → Data Collection → Analysis → Conclusion → Sharing Findings, and then the loop often begins again with new questions.

Common methods include questionnaires, interviews, observations and secondary sources. Each method has strengths and weaknesses linked to validity (truthfulness) and reliability (consistency). Ethical considerations – such as consent and confidentiality – must be part of the loop.

For example, a study of classroom behaviour might start with the question ‘Do boys and girls receive equal attention?’ The researcher would then choose a method like structured observation, collect data, analyse patterns and draw conclusions.

9. The Social Control Balance |

Societies maintain order through a balance of controls: Social Conformity ← Formal Control + Informal Control. Formal control comes from institutions like the police, courts and government that use laws and punishments. Informal control arises from family, friends and community through approval or disapproval.

  • Formal control examples: fines, prison sentences, school exclusions.
  • Informal control examples: being told off by parents, peer pressure, gossip.

When the balance tips too far towards formal control, society may feel authoritarian; when informal control weakens, social norms may erode. Both forms are necessary for what sociologists call social regulation.

10. The Identity Construction Equation |

Our identity is not fixed at birth; it is built through interaction. A useful sociological equation is: Identity = Self‑concept + Social Roles + Reflected Appraisal. Self‑concept is how we see ourselves. Social roles are the parts we play, such as daughter, student or friend. Reflected appraisal is the ‘looking‑glass self’ – we imagine how others see us and react accordingly.

Charles Cooley developed the looking‑glass self theory, which involves three steps: imagining our appearance to others, imagining their judgement, and developing a feeling such as pride or embarrassment. George Herbert Mead added that identity emerges through the ‘I’ (the spontaneous self) and the ‘Me’ (the socialised self).

Therefore, identity is a dynamic formula, constantly reshaped by family, school, media and the reactions of those around us.
