Let us analyse the cell components first. The cell wall is a rigid outer layer made of cellulose; it provides structural support and protection, helping the plant cell maintain a fixed shape.

The nucleus is often called the control centre of the cell. It contains the genetic material (DNA) and regulates all cellular activities, including growth, metabolism, and reproduction.

Question: Describe the path a cheese sandwich takes through the digestive system. Include the main organs and name the types of enzymes that break down the carbohydrate, protein and fat components in the sandwich.

Digestion begins in the mouth where teeth mechanically break the food into smaller pieces and salivary amylase (a carbohydrase) starts breaking down starch into maltose.

The food then moves down the oesophagus by peristalsis, a wave of muscle contractions that pushes the bolus to the stomach.

Question: Explain the mechanism of breathing in (inhalation) in humans. Include the roles of the diaphragm and intercostal muscles. Where does gas exchange occur in the lungs, and what gases move in which direction?

During inhalation, the diaphragm contracts and flattens from its dome shape. At the same time, the external intercostal muscles contract, pulling the ribcage upwards and outwards.

These actions increase the volume of the thoracic (chest) cavity, which decreases the air pressure inside the lungs relative to the atmospheric pressure outside. As a result, air rushes in through the nose or mouth, down the trachea, through the bronchi and bronchioles, and finally into the alveoli.

Gas exchange takes place in the alveoli – tiny air sacs surrounded by a dense network of capillaries. Carbon dioxide, a waste product of respiration, diffuses from the blood plasma into the alveoli to be exhaled.
