📚 Year 7 CAIE Chemistry: Practical Skills and Assessment Tips | 7年级CAIE化学:实验技能与考核要点

Practical work is the beating heart of Cambridge Year 7 Chemistry. It transforms abstract ideas into real experiences and builds the scientific skills you will need at Checkpoint and beyond. Whether you are measuring volumes, heating substances, or recording observations, your teacher will assess both your technique and your scientific thinking. This article explains each essential practical skill clearly, so you know exactly what to practise and how to succeed in lab assessments.

1. Safety First in the Lab |

Before you touch any equipment, you must know the safety rules. A safe scientist is an effective scientist. Your teacher will watch for safe habits throughout every practical session.

Always wear safety goggles to protect your eyes from chemical splashes, fumes or spattering liquids.

Tie back long hair and secure any loose clothing or scarves when using a Bunsen burner.

Never taste chemicals or touch them with bare hands. Use a spatula or pipette as instructed.

Always point the mouth of a test tube away from yourself and others when heating.

Know the location of the fire extinguisher, first-aid box and emergency exit before starting an experiment.

2. Common Laboratory Apparatus |

You will be expected to name and select the right equipment for a given task. Being familiar with these tools saves time and shows good practical sense.

Measuring a precise volume of liquid
Strong heating using a gas flame
Supporting glassware evenly over a flame
Filter funnel and filter paper Separating an insoluble solid from a liquid
Removing solvent to leave a solid residue

3. Measuring Volume Accurately |

Liquid volumes are nearly always measured in millilitres (mL) or cubic centimetres (cm³). Using a measuring cylinder correctly is a simple but high-scoring skill.

Place the measuring cylinder on a flat, level bench and pour the liquid gently down the side to avoid splashing.

Bend down so your eye is level with the bottom of the curved surface (the meniscus). Read the value at the centre of the meniscus, not at the edges where liquid clings to the glass.

Always use the smallest measuring cylinder that can hold the required volume; this improves accuracy because the scale divisions are smaller.

For very small volumes, a graduated pipette or a dropper marked in mL is preferable.

4. Measuring Mass and Using Balances |

Mass is measured in grams (g) or kilograms (kg) using a digital top-pan balance. Recording mass to one or two decimal places shows careful attention to precision.

Check that the balance reads 0.0 g before you begin. If it does not, press the tare or zero button.

Place a weighing boat or piece of paper on the pan and zero again if you are measuring loose powder or crystals. This subtracts the mass of the container so you only measure the substance.

Do not lean on the bench while readings settle; vibrations change the displayed value.

Record all digits shown on the display – do not round prematurely. Your results table must show the same precision, e.g. 12.30 g not 12.3 g.

5. Heating Substances Safely |

Many Year 7 experiments involve a Bunsen burner, and examiners want to see that you can control the flame correctly.

Close the air hole to produce a yellow safety flame. A yellow flame is highly visible and cooler – it is used when you are not actively heating.

Open the air hole gradually to produce a blue, roaring flame. The blue flame is much hotter and nearly invisible; it is the correct flame for efficient heating.

When heating a liquid in a test tube, hold the tube with a test-tube holder and move it in and out of the flame or use a water bath. Never keep the tube still in one spot – this prevents bumping and dangerous splashing.

If you are using a tripod and gauze, place the beaker in the centre of the gauze and light the burner beneath it. Stir liquids gently while heating to distribute heat evenly.

6. Filtration and Evaporation Techniques |

Separating mixtures is a core practical theme. Two key methods are filtration and evaporation, and your technique will be closely observed.

For filtration, fold the filter paper into a cone and place it in a filter funnel. Wet the paper slightly with distilled water so it sticks to the funnel wall.

Pour the mixture down a stirring rod and into the funnel – this ensures the liquid runs cleanly onto the paper without splashing or tearing it.

The liquid that passes through is called the filtrate. The solid left on the paper is the residue. Label both clearly if asked to collect them.

For evaporation, pour the filtrate into an evaporating dish and place it on a tripod above a gently blue flame. Heat until about half the liquid remains, then turn off the burner and let the rest evaporate naturally. This avoids spitting and loss of product.

7. Making Observations and Recording Data |

Observations are the raw material of science. Examiners will look for precise, detailed records, not vague impressions.

Record observations during the experiment, never from memory afterwards. Use short, clear sentences and note the exact time if changes are fast.

Describe colour changes (e.g. ‘blue solution turned colourless’), bubbling, heat release, smell (if safe and instructed) and any solid dissolving or precipitating.

Use comparison words like lighter, darker, more vigorous, ceased, but always back them up with sensory detail.

If you see a temperature rise, record the exact thermometer reading, e.g. 22 °C to 47 °C, not just ‘it got hotter’.

8. Drawing Tables and Graphs |

Presenting results clearly is just as important as collecting them. A well-structured table and correctly drawn graph make your findings easy to interpret.

Draw a neat results table with ruled lines. The first column lists the independent variable (what you change), and subsequent columns list the dependent variable (what you measure). Include units in the column headings, not next to each number.

For a graph, use graph paper and label the x-axis (horizontal) with the independent variable and the y-axis (vertical) with the dependent variable. Write the quantity and unit, e.g. ‘Time / s’ or ‘Temperature / °C’.

Choose a scale that uses more than half the grid and increases in equal steps like 2, 5 or 10. Plot points with a small, sharp cross (×) and, if appropriate, draw a smooth line of best fit.

Never join dots with a zigzag; a line graph implies a continuous trend. Use a bar chart only when comparing categories.

9. Identifying Variables in an Experiment |

Cambridge Checkpoint questions often ask you to name the variables. Understanding the three types will immediately improve your written answers.

The independent variable is the one you deliberately change. For example, if you investigate how temperature affects dissolving speed, temperature is the independent variable.

The dependent variable is what you measure or observe. In the same experiment, the time taken for the solid to dissolve is the dependent variable.

Control variables are kept the same to make a fair test. These might include the mass of solute, volume of solvent, stirring speed and room temperature.

A ‘fair test’ means only the independent variable is allowed to change. Everything else must remain identical. Always list at least two control variables in your plan.

10. Avoiding and Minimising Errors |

Year 7 practicals are not about perfection, but you must show you can spot mistakes and take steps to reduce them. Errors fall into simple categories.

Random errors occur when readings vary unpredictably. You can reduce them by repeating measurements and calculating a mean. Remove any anomalous result before averaging.

Systematic errors are caused by faulty equipment or poor technique, e.g. a balance that always reads 0.5 g too high. Checking the zero and calibrating instruments helps.

Parallax error occurs when you view a scale from the wrong angle. Always bring your eye to the level of the meniscus or pointer.

When you heat to dryness, some solid may spit away. To minimise product loss, switch off the burner early and allow residual heat to finish the evaporation.

11. Drawing Conclusions and Evaluating Results |

Your practical write-up must end with a conclusion that links back to the aim. Examiners value answers that are supported by the data.

State the relationship you found in words, such as ‘The greater the mass of salt added, the lower the temperature dropped.’ Avoid saying ‘I think’ – the data speaks for itself.

Compare your results with the scientific idea you learned in class. If they do not match, suggest a reason without blaming yourself.

Always evaluate the method. Note any steps that were hard to control, any readings that seemed unrealistic, and how you could improve the procedure next time.

Common improvements include using a more precise measuring cylinder, insulating a beaker to slow heat loss, or repeating the experiment one more time to confirm reproducibility.

12. Practical Exam Tips |

Finally, a few habits can make the difference between a good score and an excellent one when your practical work is being formally assessed.

Read the entire method before touching any equipment. Understand the aim, the steps and the table you need to draw. This saves time and prevents rushed mistakes.

Wear safety gear from start to finish, even when cleaning up. Keep your bench tidy and return cleaned equipment to its tray.

Label all samples immediately with pencil or sticker. Never rely on memory – a mix-up can ruin your data.

If something unexpected happens, do not panic. Write down what you saw exactly as it occurred. A note about a colour that faded faster than expected can become a valuable evaluation point.

Manage your time: spend roughly one third setting up and measuring, one third recording and drawing, and one third checking and concluding. Leave two minutes at the end for a final sweep – check units, labels and the statement of the conclusion.
