1. Philosophy Meets History |
Read the following historical scenario and then answer the philosophical question that follows: The Chinese admiral Zheng He led seven great voyages across the Indian Ocean in the early 1400s, bringing back knowledge, gifts and new ideas. A few decades later, Christopher Columbus sailed west to find a new route to Asia and claimed lands for Spain. Both explorers set out into the unknown.
Interdisciplinary question: ‘Was the desire to explore unknown lands driven more by curiosity or by greed?’ Use evidence from history and philosophical ideas about human motivation to build your argument. Think about what philosophers such as Mencius might say about whether people are naturally good or driven by self-interest.
Start by defining what curiosity means as a love of knowledge for its own sake, and greed as a desire to possess wealth or power. Then look at the two expeditions. Zheng He’s fleet brought back giraffes and scholars, not gold; Columbus sought spices and gold. Philosophers often ask whether we act from reason and wonder or from appetite. Your answer should weigh both sides before reaching a reasoned conclusion.
2. Philosophy and Science |
Consider the famous question: ‘If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?’ This riddle mixes scientific thinking with a deep philosophical puzzle about reality and perception.
From a scientific angle, a falling tree produces vibrations in the air that can be measured as sound waves. But a philosopher will push further: is ‘sound’ only the experience in a conscious mind? If no ear receives the waves, is there still a sound? This distinction between the physical event (vibrations) and the mental experience (hearing a noise) is central in philosophy of mind and perception.
Mini-task: Write two short paragraphs. In the first, explain the purely scientific answer. In the second, argue from a philosophical perspective whether sound depends on a listener. Use the example of a deaf person: if the tree falls near a person who cannot hear, do we say a sound occurred? Why or why not?
3. Philosophy with Literature |
Literature often hides big philosophical questions inside stories. Read this summary of a classic tale: In ‘The Emperor’s New Clothes’ by Hans Christian Andersen, two weavers promise the emperor a suit that is invisible to anyone who is stupid or unfit for their position. No one dares to say they cannot see the cloth—until a child cries out that the emperor is wearing nothing at all.
Now think philosophically: why do people pretend to see something that does not exist? Is it fear of being judged, the desire to fit in, or a failure to trust their own senses? This links to the philosophical concept of ‘social proof’—the idea that we look to others to decide what is real or right. The story also raises questions about truth, authority and the courage needed to speak the truth.
Interdisciplinary task: Imagine you are a philosopher advising the child. Write a short speech the child could give to the crowd, using reasons and evidence from the story to persuade people to trust their own eyes. In your speech, include the philosophical idea that truth is not decided by how many people believe it.
4. Ethics and Geography |
Geography gives us real-world dilemmas that need ethical thinking. Picture two villages that share one river. The upstream village builds a dam to store water for its crops and cattle. As a result, the downstream village receives much less water and struggles to grow its own food. No law forbids building the dam, but the effect on the neighbours is serious.
The philosophical question here is about fairness and rights: does the upstream village have a moral duty to share the water equally, even if the law does not force it? This touches on ideas of ‘distributive justice’—the fair allocation of resources. Thinkers like John Rawls have argued that we should make decisions as if we did not know which position we might find ourselves in. Would the upstream villagers still build the dam if they might have been born downstream?
Activity: Draw a decision map with two branches. On one branch, list the benefits and harms from the viewpoint of the upstream village. On the other branch, do the same for the downstream village. Then write a philosophical judgement that takes both sides into account and suggests a fair compromise.
5. Logic and Mathematics |
Philosophy and mathematics share a love of clear structure. In logic, we study how to build arguments that are valid—where the conclusion must be true if the premises are true. Try this simple exercise:
All philosophers enjoy deep thinking. (Premise 1)
Socrates is a philosopher. (Premise 2)
Therefore, Socrates enjoys deep thinking. (Conclusion)
This argument is logically valid. But look at this second example:
Some cats are black.
My pet is black.
So my pet is a cat.
The reasoning is flawed, even if the premises are true. My black pet could be a dog, a rabbit or a guinea pig. This helps us see that mathematics and logic both demand that we check whether a structure really forces the conclusion on us. In philosophical work, spotting hidden assumptions and logical leaps is just as important as solving an equation.
Challenge: Create your own pair of arguments—one valid and one invalid—using topics from your everyday life. Label the premises and conclusion, and explain in two sentences why the second argument fails.
6. Art, Beauty, and Philosophy |
Is beauty something that an object truly has, or is it ‘in the eye of the beholder’? This question brings aesthetics—the philosophy of art and beauty—into conversation with visual art, music and literature.
Imagine looking at an abstract painting full of harsh lines and clashing colours. One person finds it thrilling and beautiful; another thinks it is ugly and meaningless. If beauty were an objective property, like the shape of a triangle, then one of these two must be mistaken. But if beauty is subjective, both can be right. Philosophers like David Hume argued that beauty is a sentiment, not a fact. Yet many people still feel that some works are universally great.
Interdisciplinary task: Choose a piece of art, a photograph or a song you like. Describe it for a reader who cannot see or hear it. Then answer: can you give reasons for your judgement of its beauty that could convince someone who disagrees? Write a short philosophical dialogue between yourself and an imaginary critic, using ‘because’ reasons.
7. Philosophy in Current Events |
Every day the news brings questions that cannot be answered by facts alone. Should a country close its borders to protect its own citizens, even if that means turning away families in need? Should governments spend more on protecting the environment today, even if it means higher costs for businesses? These are philosophical decisions wrapped in political, economic and scientific facts.
One key ethical framework here is utilitarianism—the idea that we should choose the action that produces the greatest good for the greatest number of people. If building a new factory will employ 500 people but pollute a river relied on by 2000 farmers downstream, a utilitarian must add up total happiness and suffering on both sides. This way of thinking uses numbers and consequences in a very scientific style, but the final choice is a moral one.
Practice: Find a short news story about a local or global dilemma—such as building a new road through a park, or banning plastic bags. Write down two possible decisions and make a simple happiness-minus-suffering table for each. Then say which decision you think is more just, and refer to at least one philosophical value, such as fairness, respect or well-being.
8. Designing Your Own Interdisciplinary Question |
An excellent philosopher does not only answer questions—she or he learns to ask powerful ones. A well-designed interdisciplinary question connects two or more subjects in a way that forces you to think deeply and use different skills at the same time.
To build your own question, start with a concept from philosophy such as justice, truth, freedom or beauty. Then attach it to a real-world topic from another subject: a historical event, a scientific discovery, a geographical issue or a piece of art. For example: ‘Is it ever just to break a law you consider unjust? Discuss with reference to a historical protest movement.’ Or: ‘Can a computer ever be truly free? Consider the science of artificial intelligence and the philosophy of mind.’ The best questions do not have one correct answer but require careful argument from many sides.
Your task: Write three original interdisciplinary philosophy questions, each combining philosophy with a different subject. Under each question, write two bullet points explaining what a student would need to know from each subject to answer it well. This is exactly the skill that will make you a stronger thinker and a more confident exam candidate.
