1. The Building Blocks of Art: Line, Shape and Form |

A line is a continuous mark made on a surface. It can be straight, curved, zigzag, wavy, thick or thin. Remember ‘line’ because it is the simplest element – just like a single strand of thread.

Shape is a flat, enclosed area created when a line meets itself. A circle, a square and a freehand blob are all shapes. Think of ‘shape’ as something you can cut out of paper – it is 2D.

Form is a 3D object that has height, width and depth. A sphere, a cube and a pyramid are forms. To remember ‘form’, say to yourself: ‘Form has volume, like a sculpture you can walk around.’

2. The Colour Family: Hue, Primary and Secondary |

Hue is just another word for colour. If someone asks ‘What hue is that?’, they mean ‘What colour is it?’ Associate ‘hue’ with the ‘h’ in ‘hue’ being the same as the ‘h’ at the start of ‘hula hoop’ – bright and round like a colour wheel.

如果有人问 “What hue is that?”,意思就是 “那是什么颜色?”

Primary colours are red, yellow and blue. They cannot be mixed from any other colours. The memory trick here is ‘Primary = Pure’. You start with these pure colours, just like primary school is the first stage of learning.

速记口诀是 “Primary = Pure”(原色 = 纯粹)。

Secondary colours are obtained by mixing two primary colours: orange (red + yellow), green (blue + yellow) and purple/violet (red + blue). Think ‘Second comes after mixing two firsts’.

3. Warm and Cool Colours: Feeling the Temperature |

Warm colours – reds, oranges, yellows – remind us of sunshine, fire and heat. They tend to come forward in a painting. To remember this, picture a bright yellow sun warming your face.

Cool colours – blues, greens, purples – remind us of water, ice and shade. They recede, or go back, in an artwork. Imagine diving into a cool blue swimming pool on a hot day; that feeling of coolness helps fix the term in your mind.

4. Tone and Value: Light, Dark and Shading |

Tone is how light or dark something is, regardless of its hue. A light blue and a dark blue have the same hue but different tones. The word ‘tone’ sounds like ‘stone’, and stones come in many shades from pale grey to black.

Value is another word for tone. It describes the lightness or darkness of a colour. A high value is very light; a low value is very dark. To remember ‘value’, think of a number line from 0 to 10, where 0 is pitch black (low value) and 10 is pure white (high value).

Value(明度)是色调的另一种说法。

Shading means adding black to a colour to make it darker. Tinting means adding white to make it lighter. Simply remember: ‘Shade = shadow (darker), Tint = tiny bit of white (lighter)’.

Shading(加深)是指加黑色使颜色变暗。Tinting(调浅)是加白色使之变亮。

5. Texture: Real and Implied Touch |

Texture is how something feels or looks like it would feel. Real texture is the actual surface quality you can touch, like the roughness of sandpaper or the smoothness of glass. The word ‘texture’ shares ‘tex’ with ‘textile’, which means fabric – and fabric has lots of different feels.

Implied texture is the illusion of texture created by an artist. A drawing of a fluffy cat looks fluffy, but the paper is still smooth. Implied means ‘suggested but not real’. Think of ‘implied’ as ‘I’m pretending to lie’ – it sounds similar and reminds you the texture is not actually there.

(I’m pretending to lie),提醒你这种质感其实并不真实存在。

6. Space and Perspective: Creating Depth |

Space in art refers to the area around, between or within objects. Positive space is the object itself; negative space is the empty area surrounding it. A quick way to remember this is: ‘Positive is present, negative is not.’

Perspective is a technique used to make a flat drawing look 3D by showing depth and distance. The simplest type is one-point perspective, where all parallel lines seem to meet at one point on the horizon, called the vanishing point. ‘Vanishing’ means disappearing – just like the lines vanish into the distance.

7. Composition: Arranging the Ingredients |

Composition is the way elements like shapes, colours and textures are arranged in an artwork. It is like a recipe – how you place the ingredients on the canvas affects the final flavour. The word ‘composition’ contains ‘compose’, which means ‘to put together’. Just as you compose a piece of music by putting notes in order, you compose a picture by putting visual elements in order.

The rule of thirds is a simple guideline: imagine the picture plane divided into nine equal parts by two equally spaced horizontal lines and two equally spaced vertical lines. Placing the main subject along these lines or at their intersections often creates a more balanced and interesting composition. ‘Thirds’ makes you think of cutting a cake into three by three – easy to visualise.

8. Drawing and Mark-making Tools: Pencils, Charcoal, Pastels |

Graphite pencils come in different grades: H stands for hard (light fine line), B stands for black (soft dark line). The memory phrase is ‘H for Hard (light), B for Bold (dark)’. An HB pencil is in the middle, good for everyday writing and sketching.

Charcoal is a rich black drawing material made from burnt wood. It is much darker than pencil, smudges easily and is great for dramatic shading. ‘Charcoal’ instantly brings to mind the blackened wood of a campfire – perfect for expressive dark marks.

Oil pastels are soft, waxy sticks that give bright, blendable colour. Chalk pastels are dusty and powdery, giving a softer look. Keep them straight: ‘Oil is creamy like butter; chalk is dusty like a blackboard.’

9. Painting Terms: Medium, Wash and Impasto |

Medium in art can mean two things: first, the type of art material used, such as oil paint, watercolour or acrylic; second, a substance mixed with paint to alter its properties, like gel or water. To avoid confusion, think of ‘medium’ as the ‘middle man’ that connects the artist’s idea to the finished piece.

A wash is a thin, watery layer of paint that is transparent. Watercolour artists often start with a light wash to build up layers. ‘Wash’ sounds like water washing over the paper – thin and translucent.

Impasto is a technique where paint is laid on thickly so that brushstrokes or palette knife marks are visible. The paint stands up from the surface. The word ‘impasto’ contains ‘paste’ – think of spreading thick paste onto paper, raised and chunky.

10. Printmaking Basics: Relief, Collagraph, Monoprint |

Relief printing means cutting away parts of a surface so the raised areas hold the ink and print. A potato print or lino print is relief printing. ‘Relief’ is something that sticks up – like a raised bump on a map. What is raised prints; what is cut away stays blank.

Collagraph is a print made from a plate built up with collage materials like card, string and textured papers. Inked and printed, it gives a rich textured image. The name says it all: ‘colla’ from collage + ‘graph’ meaning to draw or write. So a collagraph is a collage you use to print.

Monoprint is a one-off print that cannot be exactly repeated. ‘Mono’ means one. It is a single unique print, unlike an edition of multiple identical copies. Imagine a ‘mono’ print as a ‘mono’ (single) performance on stage – one of a kind.

11. Sculpture and 3D Art: Carving, Modelling, Assemblage |

Carving is a subtractive sculptural method where material is taken away to reveal the form, as in stone or wood carving. ‘Carve’ starts with ‘c’ just like ‘cut’ – you cut away material. Think of a pumpkin carved for Halloween, where pieces are removed to create a face.

Modelling is an additive process where soft material like clay is built up and shaped by hand. The word ‘model’ reminds you of modelling clay – you add and push material into place to create form.

Assemblage is a 3D collage made from found objects and everyday items glued or fixed together. ‘Assemblage’ sounds like ‘assembly’ – putting lots of bits and pieces together into one artwork. A box of old keys, buttons and toy parts arranged on a board can become an assemblage.

12. Evaluating Art: Describe, Analyse, Interpret, Judge |

When you talk or write about art, CCEA encourages a four-step approach. First, describe what you actually see – the subject matter, the elements of art used. No opinions yet, just facts. ‘Describe’ starts with ‘D’ for ‘details’.

Second, analyse how the work is organised. Look at the composition, the use of balance, contrast, rhythm and unity. Think of ‘analyse’ as asking ‘How does this work?’ – you are breaking it down into parts.

Third, interpret the meaning or mood of the piece. What is the artist trying to say? How does it make you feel? ‘Interpret’ contains ‘pret’ like ‘pretend’ – you are imagining the story behind the image.

Finally, judge or evaluate the artwork. Give your personal opinion backed up by reasons from your description, analysis and interpretation. Was the artist successful? Why? ‘Judge’ is like being a fair critic in a court – you weigh the evidence and reach a verdict.
