1. The Elements of Art |
The building blocks of all artwork are line, shape, form, space, texture, value and colour. Understanding these seven elements is like learning the alphabet of visual language. Every masterpiece you see uses them in some combination.
Line is a mark with length and direction. It can be thick, thin, curved, zigzag or dotted. In art, lines define edges and create movement.
Shape is a flat, enclosed area. Shapes can be geometric (circles, squares, triangles) or organic (free-flowing, like the outline of a puddle).
Form is a three-dimensional object that has height, width and depth. Sculptures are forms, while drawings of cubes using shading create the illusion of form.
Space refers to the area around, between and within objects. Positive space is the subject, while negative space is the empty background that defines the subject’s edges.
Texture describes how something feels or looks like it might feel. Real texture is tactile; implied texture is visual, such as drawing the roughness of tree bark.
Value is the lightness or darkness of a tone. It helps create depth and volume. A high value is light; a low value is dark.
Colour is produced when light reflects off an object. Hue is the name of a colour (e.g. red), intensity is its brightness, and value can refer to its lightness or darkness.
2. Line and Mark-making |
In CCEA Year 7 art, you will experiment with many types of line to add expression. A contour line follows the outer edge of a form, much like tracing your hand. Think ‘contour’ = ‘outline’.
Hatching means drawing many parallel lines close together to build up tone. Cross-hatching layers these lines in different directions for darker values. Imagine a fishnet: the more nets you cross, the darker the shadow.
A gesture line is drawn quickly to capture movement and energy, like a quick sketch of someone dancing. It doesn’t need to be perfect, just alive.
Implied line does not physically exist but is suggested by a row of dots or the direction a figure is looking. Your eye completes the line.
3. Tone and Value |
Tone adds depth and makes your drawings appear less flat. By blending from light to dark, you create a tonal gradient. A tonal scale is a strip showing gradual steps from white to black.
Highlights are the brightest areas where light hits directly. Mid-tones sit in between, and shadows are the darkest parts. The area where light transitions to shadow is called the core shadow. Remember the tip: highlights ‘hit’ first, shadows ‘hide’ at the end.
Chiaroscuro is an Italian term meaning light-dark, used for strong contrasts. For Year 7, simply think ‘dramatic lighting like a torch in the dark’.
4. Colour Theory Basics |
The colour wheel is a circle of colours that shows relationships. Primary colours (red, yellow, blue) cannot be mixed. Secondary colours (orange, green, purple) are made by mixing two primaries. Tertiary colours come from mixing a primary with a secondary, such as red-orange.
Warm colours (red, orange, yellow) remind us of fire and sunshine. Cool colours (blue, green, purple) remind us of water and sky. Using warm colours can make objects seem closer; cool colours recede. Think: ‘warm advances, cool retreats.’
Complementary colours sit opposite on the colour wheel, like red and green. When placed side by side, they create strong contrast and appear more vibrant. A handy mnemonic: ‘Christmas colours’ for red and green.
Analogous colours are neighbours on the colour wheel, such as yellow, yellow-green and green. They create harmony and are pleasing to the eye.
5. Shape and Form |
A circle drawn on paper is a shape, but a ball is a form called a sphere. A square is a shape; a cube is a form. Adding shading and shadows turns flat shapes into convincing forms. Practise turning a triangle into a cone or a pyramid.
Geometric shapes follow mathematical rules, like rectangles and hexagons. Organic shapes are irregular, like the silhouette of a leaf or a splatter of ink. Artists often combine both for greater visual interest.
When drawing forms in three dimensions, always consider perspective. Objects farther away appear smaller, and parallel lines seem to converge at a vanishing point.
6. Texture: Real and Implied |
Real texture is the actual surface quality you can feel, such as the roughness of sandpaper or the smoothness of silk. Implied texture is a drawn illusion, like creating the look of fluffy fur using thousands of tiny pencil strokes.
To invent texture, observe closely. The bark of a tree looks very different from a metal spoon. Use varied pencil marks: stippling for sand, wavy curves for water, short scribbles for foliage. A memory trick: let your hand mimic the surface you wish to draw.
Frottage is a fun technique where you place paper over a textured object and rub with a crayon to capture the texture, like leaf rubbings. It links real texture to a visual record.
7. Space and Composition |
Composition is how you arrange visual elements on the page. A strong composition guides the viewer’s eye. The rule of thirds suggests placing your focal point off-centre, at the intersection of imaginary grid lines, for a more dynamic feel.
Foreground is the part closest to the viewer, middle ground is in between, and background is the farthest part. Overlapping shapes is a simple way to create depth. If a tree covers part of a house, we know the tree is nearer.
Aerial perspective uses colour and value to show distance. Objects in the distance appear lighter, bluer and less detailed. A handy reminder: ‘mountains fade to blue’.
8. Key Drawing and Painting Terms |
Media or medium refers to the materials used, such as graphite pencil, charcoal, oil pastel or watercolour. Watercolour paint is translucent and re-wettable, while acrylic paint is water-based but becomes waterproof when dry.
A wash is a thin, transparent layer of paint applied evenly. Glazing is building up layers of transparent colour to create a glowing effect. Palette is both the surface for mixing paints and the range of colours an artist uses.
Blending means smoothly mixing tones or colours. Stippling is a technique using many tiny dots. Scumbling involves a dry brush with little paint dragged over the surface to create a broken, textured effect.
9. 3D and Sculpture Terms |
Relief sculpture is attached to a background surface, like the raised design on a coin. Freestanding sculpture is meant to be viewed from all sides, also called sculpture in the round.
Armature is an inner framework that supports the sculpture, similar to a skeleton for clay or paper mache. Modelling means adding material to build up form, while carving removes material from a solid block.
Assemblage is a 3D collage made from found objects. Mixed media simply means using more than one material in one artwork, such as combining paint, fabric and buttons.
10. How to Memorise Art Terms Fast |
Create acronyms for lists you need to remember. For the seven elements, use ‘Let’s See Five Furry Squirrels Vanish Colourfully’ to stand for Line, Shape, Form, Space, Texture, Value and Colour. Make up your own silly sentence — the funnier, the more memorable.
Use flashcards with the term on one side and a quick sketch plus definition on the other. Visual memory is powerful. Try to draw a tiny icon for each term, like a zigzag line for ‘line’.
Label everything around you with art words. Look at a chair and whisper ‘form with negative space around it’. Link new vocabulary to things you love: the ‘value’ of your favourite hoodie, the ‘texture’ of your pet’s fur.
Teach a friend or family member three terms each day. Explaining concepts aloud strengthens your own understanding. Challenge yourself to use five art words in your next sketchbook annotation.
