📚 Year 7 CCEA Biology: Common Misconceptions and Corrections | Year 7 CCEA

In Year 7 CCEA Biology, students begin to explore the living world. However, certain misunderstandings often arise when learning about cells, life processes, food chains and more. This article highlights common misconceptions and provides clear corrections to help build a strong foundation.

1. Cells and Living Things |

Many students think that anything that moves or looks alive must be made of cells. The correct idea is that all living things (organisms) are made of one or more cells, but non-living things like rocks, water and plastic are not. We use the seven life processes – Movement, Respiration, Sensitivity, Growth, Reproduction, Excretion and Nutrition (MRS GREN) – to decide if something is truly alive.

2. Plant Respiration |

A common myth is that plants only respire at night and photosynthesise during the day. In reality, plants respire all day and night to release energy for their cells, just like animals. Photosynthesis occurs only when there is light, producing oxygen and glucose, but respiration is a continuous process that happens in every living cell.

3. Plant vs Animal Cells |

Some learners believe that all cells are identical, or that plant and animal cells have no differences. In fact, plant cells have three unique structures that animal cells lack: a rigid cell wall made of cellulose, chloroplasts for photosynthesis, and a large permanent vacuole filled with cell sap. Animal cells do not have a cell wall, chloroplasts or a large central vacuole.

The table above summarises the key differences. Remember that both types of cells share a nucleus, cytoplasm and cell membrane, but only plant cells have the extra features needed for structure and energy production.

4. Food Chains Start with Plants |

A frequent mistake is drawing a food chain that begins with an animal, such as a fox or a lion. The scientific rule is that a food chain must always start with a producer – almost always a green plant or algae – that can make its own food by photosynthesis. The arrows in a food chain show the direction of energy flow, pointing from the organism being eaten to the eater.

5. Breathing vs Respiration |

Students often confuse breathing (the physical act of inhaling and exhaling) with respiration (the chemical release of energy from food inside cells). Breathing brings oxygen into the lungs and removes carbon dioxide, while respiration is the chemical reaction that uses oxygen to break down glucose, releasing energy, carbon dioxide and water.

glucose + oxygen → carbon dioxide + water + energy

6. Microorganisms Are Not All Bad |

A very common misconception is that all microorganisms, such as bacteria, viruses and fungi, cause disease. In truth, the vast majority are harmless, and many are extremely useful. Helpful bacteria in our gut aid digestion, yeast (a fungus) is essential for making bread and beer, and decomposer microorganisms recycle nutrients in the soil.

7. Growth Means More Cells |

Children might think an organism grows because its cells become larger. The correct understanding is that growth mainly results from an increase in the number of cells through cell division, not from the cells simply swelling. You can compare this to building a bigger house – it requires more bricks, not bigger bricks.

8. Photosynthesis: Green Plants and Beyond |

Some learners believe photosynthesis only happens in leafy green plants. In reality, any organism that contains the green pigment chlorophyll can photosynthesise. This includes algae and some kinds of bacteria. However, for Year 7, the main focus is on how green plants use light energy to convert carbon dioxide and water into glucose and oxygen.

9. Digestion Happens All Along the Gut |

Many pupils assume that digestion only takes place in the stomach. Digestion is actually a process that begins in the mouth, where teeth break down food mechanically and saliva contains enzymes that start digesting starch. Food is then churned in the stomach before most chemical digestion and absorption happen in the small intestine.

10. The Heart Does Not Make Blood |

A common error is to think the heart manufactures blood. In reality, blood cells are produced in the bone marrow found inside certain bones. The heart is a muscular pump whose sole job is to push blood through blood vessels, delivering oxygen and nutrients and collecting waste products.
