1. Welcome to Business Studies – Your New Adventure |

Starting secondary school brings exciting new subjects, and Business Studies is one of them. It’s not just about money; it’s about people, decisions, and creativity. You will learn how a simple idea can become a shop, a product, or a service that helps others. This course will sharpen your thinking and help you see the world from a business perspective.

Business Studies combines elements of maths, English, and even art. You will practise calculating profit, writing persuasive adverts, and designing logos. It is a hands-on subject that will make you think like a problem-solver.

2. What is a Business, Really? |

A business is any organisation that provides goods or services to satisfy people’s needs and wants. It can be a small corner shop, a giant supermarket, an online store, or a hairdresser. Businesses aim to make a profit by selling things people desire.

Businesses are everywhere – from the farmer growing carrots to the app developer creating games. Even your school runs some business-like activities, such as a canteen. Understanding what makes them tick is the first step to becoming business-savvy.

3. Needs and Wants – The Starting Point |

Every business begins by identifying a need or a want. Needs are essentials for survival: food, water, shelter, and clothing. Wants are the extras that make life more enjoyable – a video game, a holiday, or designer trainers. Businesses focus on satisfying both.

The line between needs and wants can sometimes be blurry. A winter coat is a need, but a fashionable branded coat is a want. Smart businesses tap into both by offering basic necessities with optional upgrades. As a consumer, you should learn to distinguish between the two to make wise choices.

4. Goods and Services – Tangible and Intangible |

Products that businesses offer fall into two main categories: goods and services. Goods are physical items you can touch, like a bicycle, a book, or a chocolate bar. Services are actions or experiences provided by others, such as a haircut, a bus ride, or a music lesson.

Many businesses provide both. A restaurant serves food (goods) but also provides the service of cooking, cleaning, and a pleasant atmosphere. When you buy a smartphone, you get the physical device (good) and often access to after-sales support (service). Understanding the difference helps you appreciate what you pay for.

5. The Problem of Scarcity and Choice |

This is a fundamental concept in Business Studies: scarcity. It means that we have unlimited wants but limited resources to produce them. Time, money, materials – they are all scarce. Because of scarcity, we must make choices about how to use our resources effectively.

Every choice involves an opportunity cost – the next best alternative you give up. If you spend your pocket money on a cinema ticket, you cannot also buy a comic with that same money. Businesses face similar decisions: invest in a new machine or hire more staff? Learning about opportunity cost will help you think like an entrepreneur.

6. Factors of Production – What It Takes |

To produce goods and services, businesses need four factors of production: land (natural resources), labour (human effort), capital (machines, tools, buildings), and enterprise (the entrepreneur who organises the others). These are often called the ‘economic resources’.

A bakery uses land (the wheat for flour), labour (the baker), capital (the oven and mixer), and enterprise (the owner who brings everything together). Without any one of these, the business cannot operate. Year 7 students will explore these factors in simple scenarios.

7. Entrepreneurship – The Spark of Business |

An entrepreneur is someone who spots a business opportunity and takes the risk of starting something new. They are creative, determined, and willing to face challenges. Famous entrepreneurs like Richard Branson or local young founders show that age does not limit great ideas.

Entrepreneurship isn’t just about making money; it’s about solving problems. An entrepreneur might see a messy locker and invent a special organiser. In Year 7, you will have chances to think like an entrepreneur, perhaps by designing your own mini-business project. It’s fun and teaches valuable skills like teamwork and resilience.

8. Money: From Barter to Banknotes |

Long ago, people swapped goods directly – this was barter. But barter was cumbersome; you needed someone who wanted exactly what you offered. Money emerged as a medium of exchange, making transactions much easier. Today, coins and notes issued by the Bank of England are widely accepted.

Money also serves as a store of value and a unit of account. You can save money to use later, and prices are shown in pounds and pence. Digital payments like contactless cards and mobile apps have added new dimensions to money, but the basic principle remains unchanged. Understanding money is vital for managing your own finances and for studying business.

9. Earning, Spending and Budgeting |

Even as a Year 7 student, you encounter money regularly, perhaps through pocket money or small jobs. Earning money gives you buying power, but spending must be planned. A budget is a simple plan for how you will use your income. It helps you save for something special and prevents you from running out of cash.

A simple budget looks like this: Income minus Expenses = Savings (or Shortfall). For example, if you earn £10 a week and spend £7 on snacks and apps, you save £3. Businesses use budgets to control costs and plan for profit. Learning to budget early is a life skill that will serve you well in Business Studies and beyond.
