1. Welcome to Drama in Year 7 | 欢迎来到七年级戏剧课堂

Starting secondary school is an exciting milestone, and Drama will be one of the subjects that lets you move, imagine and work with others. Unlike primary school, Year 7 Drama often takes place in a dedicated studio with plenty of space to create. You will be encouraged to take creative risks, make mistakes and learn through active participation.

2. What Is Drama? |

Drama comes from the Greek word ‘dran’, meaning ‘to do’ or ‘to act’. It is an art form where people use their bodies, voices and imaginations to tell stories and explore human experiences. In school, Drama is not just about putting on a show; it is about the process of creating, making choices and communicating ideas with others.

Every time you step into a role, you build empathy and problem-solving skills. Drama invites you to ask ‘What if?’ and see the world from different perspectives.

3. The Key Elements of Drama |

In CCEA Drama, we use building blocks called the elements of drama to shape our work. These include role and character, relationships, situation, voice, movement, space, tension, focus, language, time, mood and symbol. Understanding these tools helps you make deliberate choices when performing or devising.

For example, creating a tense atmosphere might involve slow, deliberate movements and low, quiet voices, while a joyous scene could use fast pacing and open body language. Thinking about elements early on will strengthen every piece of Drama you create.

4. Working as an Ensemble |

Drama is a team effort. An ensemble is a group of performers who trust, listen and respond to each other. In Year 7, you will play many warm-up games and trust exercises designed to build a safe and supportive environment where everyone feels valued.

Good ensemble skills mean you can co-operate, share ideas and make creative offers to the group. You will learn that no single person is the star — the whole group makes the magic happen.

5. Exploring Voice and Speech |

Your voice is a powerful instrument. In Year 7 Drama, you will experiment with volume, pitch, pace, tone and clarity. Projection means using enough breath and energy so that your voice fills the space without shouting. You will also play with different accents, emotions and character voices to bring stories to life.

Articulation exercises, such as tongue twisters, help you speak clearly so the audience understands every word. Try saying ‘red lorry, yellow lorry’ three times quickly to warm up your lips and tongue.

6. Body Language and Mime |

Much of our communication is non-verbal. Body language includes posture, gestures, facial expressions and eye contact. In Drama, you will learn how physical choices tell the audience about a character’s feelings and intentions. A drooping head can show sadness, while a rigid back might suggest anger or authority.

Mime is acting without words, using only your body to illustrate actions and objects. It sharpens your ability to be clear and expressive. Simple mime tasks like climbing a ladder or trapping yourself in a box will sharpen your physical storytelling.

7. Introduction to Role-Play and Character |

Role-play means stepping into someone else’s shoes and behaving as if you are in a particular situation. In Year 7, you will often be given a scenario and asked to improvise how a character might react. This could be a child finding a mysterious key or a journalist interviewing a witness.

Developing a character goes beyond putting on a costume — you must think about how they walk, speak and think. Even simple decisions, like how a character uses a table, can reveal their background or mood. You will start to ask: ‘What does my character want in this scene?’

8. Understanding Stage Space |

Learning to use the performance space is a key skill. Actors often refer to stage areas as upstage (furthest from the audience), downstage (nearest to the audience), stage right and stage left — always from the performer’s perspective. Knowing these terms helps you follow direction and plan your blocking (planned movement on stage).

You will also explore levels (high, medium, low) and how proximity between characters can create tension or intimacy. An actor standing tall on a platform conveys power, while a person crouching at the side may suggest fear or isolation.

9. Using Stimuli for Creative Drama |

Stimuli are starting points for drama work. In Year 7, you will use images, music, poems, news headlines, objects or even a single word to spark creative ideas. For example, a photograph of an empty park bench might inspire a scene about memory, loss or a secret meeting.

Learning to respond to stimuli with imagination is central to devising. You will practice brainstorming freely, making quick still images (freeze-frames) and developing short scenes. No idea is too silly — it is all part of finding the story you want to tell.

10. The Process of Devising |

Devising is the process of creating original drama from scratch, rather than working from a ready-made script. In CCEA Drama, you will learn to follow a creative process: exploring the stimulus, improvising around ideas, selecting the best moments, structuring a piece and rehearsing it for performance.

This process teaches you to think like a director and playwright. You will learn about the importance of a clear beginning, middle and end, and how to use narration, transitions and climaxes to keep an audience engaged. Collaboration is key — every person in your group contributes to the final piece.

11. Reflection and Evaluation |

In Year 7 Drama, you will be asked to reflect on your own work and that of others. This means describing what went well, what could be improved and how specific drama elements were used. You might use phrases like ‘The tension was built through slow movement and silence’ or ‘The character’s status was shown by upright posture’.

Using drama vocabulary helps you communicate more effectively. In class, you may give and receive ‘two stars and a wish’ feedback — two positive observations and one constructive suggestion. This supportive approach builds a culture where everyone can grow.

12. Preparing for Your First Lesson |

You do not need any special equipment for Drama, but it helps to wear comfortable clothing and shoes that allow you to move freely. Your teacher will explain the basic rules, such as respecting the space, keeping safe and listening when others perform. Bring an open mind and a willingness to join in.

Over the summer, you might start by watching little scenes in films or plays and asking yourself: how did the actor show that emotion? You can also play drama games with friends or simply make up stories around a random object. Every bit of creative play prepares you for the wonderful adventures that await in Year 7 Drama.
