📚 Year 7 CCEA Law: Core Knowledge Review | Year 7 CCEA

Law shapes every part of our lives, from the moment we wake up to the moment we go to sleep. This guide helps Year 7 students explore the core concepts of law in the CCEA curriculum, explaining what law is, how it is made, and why it matters for everyone in Northern Ireland.

1. What Is Law? |

Law is a set of rules created by a government or official authority that everyone in society must follow.

Unlike personal habits or school guidelines, breaking the law carries formal consequences such as fines, community service orders, or even imprisonment.

For example, it is a school expectation to treat others with respect, but it is a legal requirement not to assault another person. The law provides a clear standard of behaviour that protects everyone.

Importantly, the principle of the rule of law means that no one is above the law – not even the government. All people and institutions must obey the law equally.

The concept of law can be traced back thousands of years, but its central purpose has always been to create a just and orderly society where rights are protected.

2. Rules vs. Laws |

We encounter rules everywhere – at home, at school, and in sports clubs. Rules are usually set by individuals or groups for a specific context.

Laws, on the other hand, are created by a formal law-making body (like Parliament) and apply to the whole country. They are enforced by the police and courts.

If you break a school rule, you might get detention. If you break a law, you could be arrested and face a criminal record. Therefore, laws carry much greater weight and more serious consequences.

By understanding this difference, you can see how society relies on laws to keep order, while rules help smaller communities work smoothly.

Another key difference is that laws are written down and published so that everyone can know them, whereas rules are often informal and may vary from place to place.

3. Why Do We Need Laws? |

Without laws, there would be confusion and conflict. Laws keep us safe by defining unacceptable behaviour, such as theft, violence, and fraud.

They also protect our rights – for instance, the right to own property, the right to education, and the right to be treated fairly. Laws set the boundaries within which we can enjoy our freedoms.

Laws help resolve disagreements by providing courts where people can settle disputes peacefully instead of resorting to violence.

In Northern Ireland, laws also support the peace process and protect the rights of all communities, which is a key part of the Good Friday Agreement.

Additionally, laws create a sense of fairness in daily life, ensuring that businesses operate honestly, contracts are kept, and public services are delivered equitably.

4. Making the Law: Parliament and MLAs |

In the United Kingdom, most laws are made by Parliament in Westminster. However, Northern Ireland has its own devolved Assembly at Stormont, where MLAs (Members of the Legislative Assembly) can make laws on matters such as education, health, and transport.
