Welcome to your holiday revision guide for Year 7 CCEA Media Studies. The winter break is a perfect time to revisit what you have learned so far, practice analysing media texts, and even create your own. This plan will help you stay on track without feeling overwhelmed. Follow the daily activities, check your understanding with quick tasks, and come back to school feeling confident and ready.

1. Setting Your Revision Goals |

Before you start, take a few minutes to think about what you want to achieve. Maybe you found analysing film posters tricky, or you want to get better at explaining how an advert targets a specific audience. Write down two or three clear goals, such as ‘I will understand the four key media concepts’ or ‘I can design a storyboard with at least six shots’. Keep these goals visible as you work through the plan.

2. The Four Key Concepts: Media Language |

Media language is the toolkit we use to ‘read’ a media text. It includes camera shots (close-up, long shot, etc.), angles, lighting, colours, sounds, and on-screen text. Think of a cereal box you saw recently: what colours were used? What did the font look like? Every choice is made on purpose to create a meaning or a feeling. Spend today reviewing your notes on media language and make a mini glossary of ten terms with simple definitions.

3. The Four Key Concepts: Representation |

Representation is about how people, places and ideas are shown to us through the media. Are teenagers shown as being lazy or energetic? Is a city shown as dangerous or exciting? These images are constructed, and they often rely on stereotypes. For revision, pick a character from a magazine cover or a TV advert and write down three words to describe how they are represented. Then ask: is this representation fair? Who created it, and why?

4. The Four Key Concepts: Audience |

Every media product is made for someone. That someone is the target audience. Audiences can be grouped by age, gender, interests, or lifestyle. A teen magazine will use different language, images and topics than a gardening magazine. Today’s task: find two adverts online (or in a newspaper) aimed at different audiences. For each, explain who you think the target audience is and how the advert’s choices appeal to them. Use media language terms where you can.

5. The Four Key Concepts: Institution |

Institutions are the organisations that make and share media texts — like the BBC, Disney, or TikTok. Each institution has its own values, style, and reasons for creating content. Some want to inform, others to entertain or persuade. Spend some time today exploring the websites or logos of two very different media institutions. Write a short paragraph for each, explaining what you think their main purpose is and what kind of texts they produce.

6. Analysing a Film Poster |

Film posters combine images, colours, taglines, and star names to grab our attention and tell us what the film is about. Choose a film poster for a movie you know well. Draw a quick sketch of it in your notebook and label the key media elements: main image, film title, tagline, colours, star names, and any text. Then answer: what genre is the film? How can you tell? Who is the target audience? What mood does the poster create?

7. Unpacking a TV Advertisement |

TV adverts are short and powerful. They use a mix of moving images, music, voice-over, and special effects to sell a product or idea. Watch an advert you can find on a children’s channel or a product brand’s website. Pause it at three different moments and describe what you see and hear using media language. Pay attention to the narrative — many adverts tell a tiny story in thirty seconds. What problem is introduced, and how does the product solve it?

8. Practical Task: Create a Simple Storyboard |

Storyboarding is a vital skill in Media Studies. It helps you plan your shots and tell a visual story. For today’s task, design a six-frame storyboard for a 30-second advert promoting a healthy snack. Each frame should show a different shot type (e.g., close-up, mid-shot, wide shot) and include brief notes underneath about camera action, sound, and dialogue. Do not worry about drawing perfectly — stick figures are fine.

9. Design Your Own Magazine Cover |

Magazine covers use the layout to attract buyers. Look at a real teen magazine cover and note where the masthead (title), main image, cover lines, and barcode go. Now imagine you are creating a new magazine for Year 7 students about gaming, sport, or pop culture. Draw your cover and think carefully about your choices: what font suggests fun? Which colours will appeal to your audience? Write two or three cover lines that tease the content inside.

10. Review and Self-Assessment |

Now that you have worked through several key topics and creative tasks, look back at the goals you set at the beginning. Did you understand media language better? Can you confidently explain the difference between representation and reality? Make a quick list of what you feel secure about and what you still want to ask your teacher. Use this list as your starting point when lessons resume. Remember, Media Studies is about curiosity — keep noticing the media all around you.
