Year 7 CIE Art and Design lays the foundation for visual literacy and creative practice. This article outlines the essential knowledge areas that students encounter, from the seven visual elements and design principles to colour theory, drawing techniques, media exploration, and the study of artists. Mastering these core concepts helps students develop their observational, analytical, and expressive skills.

1. The Visual Elements |

Line: A mark made by a moving point, varying in width, direction, length, and texture. Artists use line to define edges, suggest movement, and convey emotion.

Shape: A two-dimensional enclosed area with height and width, such as circles, squares, or organic freeform shapes.

Form: A three-dimensional object that has height, width, and depth, like cubes, spheres, and cylinders. In 2D art, form is created by using shading and perspective.

Space: The area around, between, or within components of an artwork. Positive space refers to the subject, while negative space is the background or empty areas.

Texture: The surface quality of an object, which can be actual (tactile) or implied (visual). Techniques like cross-hatching can suggest texture.

Colour: Consists of hue (the name of a colour), intensity (saturation), and value (lightness or darkness). Colour influences mood and composition.

Value/Tone: The lightness or darkness of a colour or of grey. Tonal contrast helps create depth and focus.

2. Principles of Design |

Balance: The distribution of visual weight in a composition. Symmetrical balance mirrors elements on both sides, while asymmetrical balance uses different objects to create equilibrium.

Contrast: The arrangement of opposite elements, such as light vs dark, rough vs smooth, large vs small. Contrast can highlight a focal area.

Emphasis: The part of the design that catches the viewer’s attention, often achieved through contrast, placement, or isolation.
