1. Stage Directions & Spatial Awareness |
Stage directions are written from the actor’s perspective. When you stand on stage facing the audience, stage right is to your right, and stage left is to your left. Upstage refers to the area towards the back of the stage, and downstage is the part closest to the audience. Centre stage is the middle spot where focus is strongest.
Memory aid: Imagine a raked (sloped) stage from history – upstage was literally higher. Think ‘up’ = away from audience. Also, notice that ‘stage left’ and ‘stage right’ are the actor’s own left and right. It helps to practise by standing and pointing. Another key term is wings: the offstage areas on the left and right where actors wait.
Body positions also matter: full front means facing the audience directly, profile means turned to the side, three-quarter turn is halfway between front and profile, and back to audience can be used for specific effects. Know these to discuss staging.
2. Character and Role Terms |
The protagonist is the main character of the story, often the one the audience roots for. The antagonist is the character or force that opposes the protagonist, creating conflict. Understanding these helps you analyse relationships on stage.
Characterisation is the process of creating a believable character through voice, movement, and thought. Motivation is the reason behind a character’s actions – what they want in a scene. A useful tool is the role-on-the-wall technique: drawing an outline of a figure and writing inner thoughts inside and outside facts around it.
Also important is multi-roling, where one actor plays more than one character, often by changing voice and posture. This is common in ensemble work.
3. Performance Techniques |
Blocking refers to the precise movement and positioning of actors on stage, planned by the director. It ensures that scenes flow smoothly and the audience’s focus is directed. Blocking includes entrances, exits, and crosses.
A tableau (or freeze frame) is a still image created by actors using their bodies to tell a story moment. It is like a photograph that captures key emotions and relationships. Thought-tracking reveals the inner thoughts of a character at a specific moment, often spoken aloud while the tableau is held.
