1. What is History? |

History is the inquiry into the human past, based on sources such as documents, artefacts, oral accounts and images. Unlike simple storytelling, history involves questioning, interpreting and constructing arguments about what happened and why. It is a discipline that constantly evolves as new evidence emerges and as we ask new questions of old material.

By studying history, you learn to weigh evidence, recognise different perspectives and understand the long threads that connect past to present. Asking ‘How do we know?’ is just as important as knowing what happened.

2. Timelines and Chronology |

Chronology is the arrangement of events in the order they occurred. Historians use timelines to visualise sequences and to grasp how far apart events were. A solid grasp of chronology helps prevent muddled thinking and allows us to see relationships between events.

Two main dating systems are used: the traditional BC (Before Christ) and AD (Anno Domini, Latin for ‘in the year of the Lord’), and the modern BCE (Before Common Era) and CE (Common Era). The numbers remain the same; only the labels differ.

Meaning Traditional Modern
Before year 1 BC BCE
Year 1 and later AD CE

3. Primary and Secondary Sources |

A primary source is a first‑hand piece of evidence created during the period under study. Examples include a Roman coin, the Bayeux Tapestry, a soldier’s diary or a photograph. These sources offer direct insight but must be examined for reliability and bias.

A secondary source is created after the event, typically by historians who interpret primary material. Textbooks, documentaries and essays are secondary sources. They provide analysis and context, but they are not eyewitness accounts. Good historians use both types and cross‑check information.

4. Understanding Cause and Consequence |

Historians ask not just what happened, but why. Causes explain the reasons behind events. They can be long‑term (underlying factors that build up over time) or short‑term (immediate triggers). Often, a combination of both is needed to explain an event fully.

Consequences are the results of an event, which may be intended or unintended. For example, the Norman Conquest of 1066 had long‑term causes such as the power vacuum after Edward the Confessor’s death and William’s dynastic claim. The short‑term trigger was Harold Godwinson’s coronation. Consequences included the introduction of feudalism and the replacement of the English elite with Normans, which reshaped language and society.

5. Continuity and Change |

History is shaped by what stays the same (continuity) and what alters (change). Change can be rapid, like a battle, or gradual, like the spread of a new religion. Continuity can often be found in everyday life, even during periods of great upheaval.

After the Norman Conquest, for instance, the ruling class changed dramatically, and French words poured into English. Yet for the majority of peasants, farming methods, village communities and many local customs showed strong continuity. Recognising this mix prevents oversimplified views of the past.

6. Historical Significance |

Not all past events deserve equal attention. Significance helps historians decide which events, people or developments mattered most. An event is often considered significant if it affected many people, led to lasting change, or reveals something essential about a society’s values.

For example, the signing of Magna Carta in 1215 is significant because it limited the king’s power and introduced the idea that everyone, including the monarch, is subject to the law. Its principles echoed through later constitutional documents. Significance can also change over time: what one generation finds pivotal, another may view differently.

7. Interpreting Evidence |

All evidence must be interrogated critically. Useful questions to ask of any source include: Who created it? When and why? Is it reliable or biased? A medieval chronicle praising a king may exaggerate his virtues to please a patron. A propaganda poster might distort the truth to sway opinion.

The Bayeux Tapestry is a primary source, but it tells the story of the Norman Conquest from a Norman perspective, justifying William’s invasion. By comparing it with other sources, such as the Anglo‑Saxon Chronicle, we can build a more balanced understanding. Cross‑referencing is a key historian’s tool.

8. Legacy of Ancient Rome |

The Roman Empire left a profound and lasting legacy in Britain and across Europe. When the Romans withdrew from Britain around AD 410, they left behind straight roads, planned towns, public baths, aqueducts and the Latin language. Many Roman structures, such as Hadrian’s Wall, still mark the landscape today.

Rome’s influence extended far beyond engineering. Roman law, concepts of citizenship, and the spread of Christianity shaped medieval governance and culture. Even centuries after the empire’s fall, Latin remained the language of scholarship and the Church, and Roman ideas about statecraft continued to inspire rulers.

9. The Norman Conquest |

The year 1066 is a turning point in English history. King Edward the Confessor died without an heir, sparking a succession crisis. Harold Godwinson was crowned king, but William, Duke of Normandy, claimed that Edward had promised him the throne. After Harold defeated a Viking army at Stamford Bridge, William invaded southern England.

At the Battle of Hastings, William’s forces defeated and killed Harold. William was crowned on Christmas Day and became known as William the Conqueror. He introduced the feudal system, commissioned the Domesday Book to survey landholding, and replaced the Anglo‑Saxon elite with Norman lords, permanently altering the English ruling class and its culture.
