1. The Socialisation Theorem |

The Socialisation Theorem states that an individual’s social self is formed through the combination of internalisation of cultural norms and the application of external sanctions. In symbolic form: Social Self = Internalised Norms (I) × Social Sanctions (S). This means that we learn to behave appropriately both because we believe in the rules and because society rewards or punishes us.

Primary agents such as the family teach us basic values, while secondary agents like schools and media reinforce them. If a child internalises the norm ‘share your toys’, they do it from conviction. If they only share to avoid a time-out, that’s the sanction side of the formula operating.

Socialisation = Internalisation × External Sanctions

2. The Social Structure Formula |

The Social Structure Formula describes the skeleton of any society: Social Structure = Statuses (Sₜ) + Roles (R) + Institutions (Iₙ). Your status is a social position you hold (like student, daughter, friend), roles are the behaviours expected of that status, and institutions are the organised systems of norms (family, education, government).

An individual can hold multiple statuses simultaneously; this is called a status set. For example, a Year 7 student might simultaneously be a daughter, a netball player, and a class monitor. Each status comes with a role set, and the smooth functioning of society depends on people performing their roles as expected.

  • Status Set: The collection of all the statuses an individual holds at one time.
  • Role Set: The different roles attached to a single status.

3. The Norm Transmission Theorem |

The Norm Transmission Theorem proposes that the strength of a norm in a society equals the frequency of its enforcement multiplied by cultural visibility. In simple terms: Norm Strength = Enforcement Frequency (E) × Cultural Visibility (V). Norms that are regularly policed and highly visible (like queuing) become deeply embedded.

Folkways, mores, and laws can be understood through this theorem. Folkways like saying ‘please’ have moderate enforcement and visibility, so their strength is lower. Laws have high enforcement and high visibility, thus they carry significant strength. CIE Sociology students should be able to identify examples of each type.

Norm Type Enforcement (E) Visibility (V) Strength
Folkway (民俗) Low Medium Low–Medium
More (民德) Medium High Medium–High
Law (法律) High Very High Strongest

4. The Role Conflict Theorem |

This theorem states that role conflict arises when the demands of two or more statuses are incompatible. The probability of role conflict can be expressed as Conflict Probability = Incompatibility of Role Demands (D) − Available Coping Resources (R). When a person lacks time, emotional energy, or institutional support, role conflict intensifies.

For example, a working parent who needs to attend a school play at the same time as an important meeting experiences role conflict between the statuses of ‘employee’ and ‘parent’. Sociologists study how people manage such tensions through role prioritisation or role compartmentalisation.

Role Conflict = Σ(Demands of Status A ∩ Demands of Status B) > Resources

5. The Social Control Theorem |

The Social Control Theorem explains how societies maintain order. It states that conformity is the product of internal controls and external controls working together: Conformity = Internal Control (Cᵢ) + External Control (Cₑ). Internal control comes from conscience and socialised morality; external control comes from sanctions, surveillance, and laws.

Travis Hirschi’s Control Theory in the context of crime can be related: strong bonds to society (attachment, commitment, involvement, belief) increase internal control, reducing deviance. For a Year 7 understanding, think of a pupil who does not cheat on a test – maybe because they know it’s wrong (internal) or because they fear being caught (external).

  • Internal Control: Morality, guilt, self-identity
  • External Control: Police, teachers, peer pressure, CCTV

6. The Inequality Equation |

The Inequality Equation helps visualise social stratification. It can be written as: Life Chances = f (Wealth, Power, Prestige). Life chances – the opportunities to achieve desired goods and experiences – depend on a person’s combination of economic resources (wealth), ability to influence others (power), and social esteem (prestige).

In a class-based society, these three dimensions often reinforce one another. Max Weber argued that class, status, and party are separate but overlapping sources of inequality. In Year 7, we focus on recognising how a person born into a wealthy family with high social standing tends to have better educational and health outcomes.

Life Chances = W + P + Pʳ (Wealth + Power + Prestige)

7. The Bureaucracy Theorem |

Inspired by Max Weber’s ideal type, the Bureaucracy Theorem describes an efficient formal organisation: Bureaucracy = Hierarchy of Authority + Written Rules + Specialisation + Impersonality. These four elements, when fully present, create a predictable and efficient administrative machine. Schools and government departments are common examples.

However, the theorem also contains a ‘dysfunction coefficient’. If rules become too rigid, bureaucracy can lead to red tape and inefficiency, known as ‘trained incapacity’. Year 7 students can observe this when a simple request requires filling out multiple forms unnecessarily.

  • Hierarchy: clear chain of command
  • Written Rules: formal, recorded procedures

8. The Cultural Relativism Formula |

This formula reminds us that values and norms are not absolute but vary across cultures. Expressed as: Judgement Validity = f (Cultural Context). Ethical and moral codes can only be properly understood within the specific cultural setting. What is considered polite or rude, lawful or deviant, depends on that society’s shared traditions and history.

For CIE Sociology, the key takeaway is to avoid ethnocentrism – the tendency to see one’s own culture as superior or the norm. When studying other cultures, students should apply cultural relativism, understanding that eating habits, family structures, or gender roles can be different yet equally valid.

Cultural Judgement = Validity / Ethnocentrism

9. The Primary Socialisation Theorem |

The Primary Socialisation Theorem focuses on the early years: Primary Self = Family Nurture × Imitation of Significant Others. During infancy and early childhood, the family is the main agent, and the child learns language, basic norms, and emotional attachments through close interaction with parents and siblings.

This period is crucial for forming a stable identity. Charles Cooley’s ‘looking-glass self’ emerges here: a child develops a self-image based on how they imagine others see them. In Year 7 sociology, we link this to topics on family and the importance of positive reinforcement in early development.

10. The Secondary Socialisation Theorem |

After the family, the Secondary Socialisation Theorem kicks in: Socialised Adult = School Rules × Peer Group Influence × Media Messages. From school age onwards, a range of agencies outside the family shape our beliefs and behaviour. This theorem explains how the formal curriculum and the hidden curriculum in schools teach punctuality, conformity, and competition.

Peer groups provide a space to practise independence and negotiation, while mass media transmit cultural ideals and stereotypes. The formula highlights that the self is not fixed after childhood; it continues to develop through lifelong learning and resocialisation.

Secondary Socialisation = Σ(Institutions beyond family)

11. The Social Mobility Formula |

The Social Mobility Formula captures movement between social strata: Mobility Index = (Achieved Status − Ascribed Status) × Structural Opportunity. Ascribed status is what you are born with (e.g., race, royal family); achieved status is what you earn (e.g., doctor, athlete). Structural opportunity refers to whether the society provides accessible education and jobs.

If structural opportunity is high, an individual can overcome low ascribed status through educational achievement, leading to upward social mobility. In a closed system like a caste society, structural opportunity is near zero, so mobility is minimal. CIE Year 7 links this to the study of inequality and meritocracy.

12. The Labelling Theorem |

Rooted in Howard Becker’s interactionist perspective, the Labelling Theorem says: Deviance = Behaviour + Societal Reaction (Label). No act is inherently deviant; it only becomes deviant when a social audience defines it as such and attaches a label to the actor. The theorem emphasises that the powerful have greater ability to impose labels.

Once labelled, an individual may internalise that label, leading to a self-fulfilling prophecy. For instance, a student repeatedly told they are ‘disruptive’ may begin to act disruptively. This theorem is vital for understanding crime, deviance, and classroom dynamics in the CIE Year 7 syllabus.

Labelling: B + L → Self-Fulfilling Prophecy
