1. What is Statistics? |

Statistics is all around us. It helps us answer questions like ‘Which football team has the best win rate?’ or ‘What is the most popular movie genre in my class?’ In Year 7, you will learn that statistics involves forming a question, gathering relevant data, organising that data in tables or charts, and then interpreting what the numbers tell us. A key skill is learning to ask clear, measurable questions – for example, instead of ‘Do people like sports?’, we ask ‘What percentage of Year 7 students play a sport at least twice a week?’. This shift makes data collection meaningful and unbiased.

In the Cambridge curriculum, statistics is integrated with mathematics to develop your numerical reasoning. You will work with real-life data, such as class test scores, daily temperatures, or favourite foods. Understanding what statistics is sets the foundation for every topic that follows, from drawing bar charts to calculating averages. It also teaches you to critique data presented in the media – a vital skill in today’s information-rich world.

2. Types of Data |

Before you can analyse data, you need to recognise what type of data you are dealing with. In Year 7 statistics, we classify data into two broad categories: categorical (qualitative) data and numerical (quantitative) data. Categorical data describes qualities or groups – for example, eye colour (blue, brown, green), types of pet (dog, cat, hamster), or favourite subject. Numerical data involves numbers that can be measured or counted, such as height, number of siblings, or test marks.

Data Type Description Examples
Categorical Names or labels Favourite colour, transport method
Discrete Numerical Whole numbers (counted) Number of books, goals scored
Continuous Numerical Measured values (can be decimals) Height, time taken to run 100 m

Numerical data is further split into discrete and continuous data. Discrete data can only take specific values, usually whole numbers – like the number of students in a class. Continuous data can take any value within a range, often involving measurements – like the mass of a bag of apples, which could be 1.25 kg. Identifying the data type correctly is important because it determines which graph or chart is most appropriate to use.

3. Collecting Data |

Good analysis begins with good data. In Year 7, you will learn how to design simple surveys and experiments to collect reliable information. A survey must have a clear purpose and use carefully worded questions to avoid bias. For example, instead of asking ‘Don’t you think maths is the best subject?’, a fair question would be ‘On a scale of 1 to 5, how much do you enjoy maths?’. The data collection method can be a questionnaire, an observation, or an experiment.

When collecting data, you must also decide whether to survey a whole population or just a sample. In class, you often work with a small sample, such as your classmates. You will record your data neatly in a tally chart, where each observation is marked with a tally stroke. The fifth stroke crosses the previous four, making groups of five easy to count – a method you will apply again and again in Year 7 statistics.

4. Organising Data: Frequency Tables |

Once you have collected raw data, the next step is to organise it into a frequency table. A frequency table lists each possible category or value and the number of times it occurs (the frequency). For example, if 20 students were asked about their favourite fruit, and 6 said apple, 8 said banana, 4 said orange, and 2 said grape, you can present this clearly in a table. The frequency column allows you to see the most and least popular choices at a glance.

Frequency tables also help when data has many different values. For numerical data, you might group values into intervals, creating a grouped frequency table. Suppose you record the hand spans of 30 students in centimetres: you could group them as 12–14 cm, 15–17 cm, 18–20 cm, and so on. Grouping makes large sets of data easier to handle while still showing overall patterns. In Year 7, you will practise both ungrouped and simple grouped frequency tables, ready for more advanced work later.

5. Pictograms and Bar Charts |

Visualising data makes it much easier to understand. Two common graphs you will learn to draw and interpret are pictograms and bar charts. A pictogram uses pictures or symbols to represent a certain number of items. For instance, one smiley face might represent 2 students. If 10 students prefer chocolate ice cream, you would draw 5 smiley faces. You must always include a key to explain what each symbol stands for.

A bar chart displays data using rectangular bars of equal width. The height (or length) of each bar corresponds to the frequency. Bars are usually drawn with gaps between them to show that the categories are separate. For example, you might draw a bar chart showing the number of students walking, cycling, or taking the bus to school. You must label both axes and give the chart a clear title. Bar charts are extremely useful for comparing different categories at a glance.

6. Pie Charts | 饼图

A pie chart is a circular graph divided into sectors, where each sector represents a proportion of the total data. The whole circle stands for the complete data set (100% or 360°). In Year 7, you will learn to interpret given pie charts and also construct your own simple ones. To draw a pie chart, you need to calculate the angle for each category using the formula:

Angle = (Frequency of category ÷ Total frequency) × 360°

For example, if 15 out of 60 students chose red as their favourite colour, the angle for the red sector is (15 ÷ 60) × 360° = 90°. After calculating angles, you draw the sectors using a protractor and label each one. Pie charts are most useful when you want to show the relative sizes of parts making up a whole, such as how a pupil spends a day. However, they are less effective than bar charts when comparing exact numbers.

7. Mean, Median, Mode and Range |

Averages help you summarise a set of numbers with a single typical value. In Year 7, you will meet three measures of average: mode, median, and mean. The mode is the value that appears most often. A data set can have one mode, more than one mode (bimodal), or no mode at all. The median is the middle value when the data is arranged in order – if there is an even number of values, the median is the average of the two middle numbers.

The mean is what many people think of as ‘average’ – it is calculated by adding up all the values and dividing by how many values there are. The formula can be written as:

Mean = (Sum of all values) ÷ Number of values

For the data set {4, 8, 6, 5, 3}, the mean is (4+8+6+5+3) ÷ 5 = 26 ÷ 5 = 5.2. The range measures how spread out the data is: it is the difference between the largest and smallest values. For the same set, range = 8 – 3 = 5. Choosing the right average depends on the data – the mean is sensitive to extreme values, while the median is robust. In Year 7, you will often calculate all three and comment on which summary best describes the data.

8. Introduction to Probability |

Probability is the branch of mathematics that deals with chance and uncertainty. In Year 7 statistics, you are introduced to the probability scale, which ranges from 0 (impossible) to 1 (certain). An event with a probability of 0.5 has an even chance of happening, like getting a head when flipping a fair coin. You will learn to express probabilities using fractions, decimals, or percentages. The probability of an event can be found using:

Probability = Number of favourable outcomes ÷ Total number of possible outcomes

For example, if you roll a fair six-sided die, the probability of rolling a 3 is 1 out of 6, written as 1/6. The probability of rolling an even number (2, 4, or 6) is 3/6, which simplifies to 1/2 or 0.5. You will also explore simple experiments and list outcomes systematically using sample space diagrams. Understanding probability early helps you link data collection with the likelihood of future events and forms the basis for more advanced topics in later years.

9. Interpreting Graphs |

Drawing graphs is only half the job – the real power of statistics comes from interpreting them. In Year 7, you will be asked to read information from bar charts, pictograms, and pie charts, as well as simple line graphs. You need to check the scales on the axes, read values accurately, and answer questions such as ‘Which category has the highest frequency?’ or ‘How many more students chose basketball than tennis?’. When a graph uses symbols or grouped bars, pay close attention to the key.

You will also begin to identify patterns and trends. For instance, from a line graph showing the temperature over a week, you can describe whether it increased, decreased, or stayed about the same. Interpreting data also involves using averages and the range to support your statements. Instead of just saying ‘the bar is taller’, you should say ‘the median score for afternoon tests was higher, which suggests students performed better later in the day’. Developing this skill will make you a critical thinker, able to back your conclusions with numerical evidence.

10. Summer Bridging Activities and Tips |

To make the most of your summer and arrive in Year 7 feeling prepared, try these simple activities. They will sharpen your statistical thinking without feeling like homework. First, start a ‘data diary’: each day, record a small piece of data – perhaps the weather (sunny, cloudy, rainy), the number of steps you walk, or the types of birds you see in the garden. After a few weeks, organise your entries into a frequency table and draw a bar chart or pictogram. This hands-on project brings statistics to life.
