1. Introducing Tom’s Lemonade Stand |

Tom is a 12‑year‑old student who lives in a busy neighbourhood. He has set himself a goal: to save enough money to buy a new games console that costs £50. After thinking about how he can earn money, he notices that many people walk past his house on hot summer days. He decides to set up a lemonade stand in his front garden. His plan is to sell fresh, homemade lemonade at a fair price. This simple idea is the starting point for a real‑life mini business, and it will help us explore the basics of enterprise.

2. Enterprise and Entrepreneurship |

Enterprise is the ability to spot an opportunity and take risks to turn an idea into a business. An entrepreneur is the person who does this. Tom shows enterprising behaviour because he identifies a need — refreshing drinks on a hot day — and organises resources to meet that need. He also takes a financial risk: he must buy lemons, sugar and cups before he makes any sales. If no one buys his lemonade, he could lose his pocket money.

3. Needs and Wants |

In business, a need is something essential for survival, such as water. A want is something we desire but can live without, like a games console. Tom’s customers have a need to quench their thirst, and his lemonade helps satisfy that need. Tom himself has a want for a new console, which motivates him to start the business. Understanding needs and wants helps a business decide what to sell and how to attract customers.

4. Adding Value | 附加值

Adding value means turning simple ingredients into a finished product that customers are willing to pay more for. Tom buys basic ingredients — lemons, sugar, water — but he transforms them into a cool, tasty drink served in a decorated cup with a smile. The difference between the cost of the raw materials and the selling price is the added value. By adding ice, a slice of lemon on the cup, and friendly service, Tom increases the perceived value and can charge a higher price than simply selling a plain drink.

5. Type of Business: Sole Trader |

Tom operates his lemonade stand as a sole trader. A sole trader is a business owned and run by one person. This is the simplest form of business organisation. Tom makes all the decisions himself, keeps all the profits, but is also personally responsible for any debts. Because he is young, his parents help him buy supplies, but legally Tom is the owner. The sole trader structure is easy to set up and requires very little paperwork, making it ideal for a first small business.

6. Market Research |

Before launching his stand, Tom carries out simple primary market research. He asks ten neighbours what flavours they prefer and how much they would pay for a cup of lemonade. He also observes how many people walk by at different times of the day. This research gives him valuable data: most neighbours like classic lemon flavour, and they are willing to pay around 50 pence per cup. With this information, Tom can make better decisions about his product and price, reducing the risk of failure.

7. Marketing Mix: Product and Price |

The marketing mix is often described as the ‘4 Ps’: Product, Price, Place and Promotion. Tom’s product is a chilled cup of homemade lemonade with optional mint leaves for extra freshness. His price is set at 50 pence per cup, based on his market research and the cost of ingredients. This price is low enough to attract customers but high enough to cover costs and generate profit. A clear product and a carefully chosen price help Tom compete against other refreshments people could buy instead.

8. Marketing Mix: Place and Promotion |

Tom chooses the place carefully: his front garden, which is on a busy street near a park. On sunny days, many families pass by, which increases the chance of impulse purchases. For promotion, Tom draws colourful posters and places them at the end of the road. He also tells his friends, who spread the word. Furthermore, he offers a small loyalty card: ‘Buy 5 cups, get the 6th free’. These promotional activities create awareness and encourage repeat customers without spending much money.

9. Costs and Revenue |

In business, costs are the expenses a firm must pay to produce and sell its products. Tom’s costs include lemons, sugar, water, ice, paper cups and ingredients for the free mint leaves. He calculates the cost of making one cup is 20 pence. Revenue is the money earned from selling goods. If Tom sells 100 cups in a weekend at 50 pence each, his total revenue is:

Revenue = Selling Price × Quantity Sold = £0.50 × 100 = £50

Understanding both costs and revenue is essential to know whether a business is making money or losing it.

10. Profit Calculation |

Profit is the money left after all costs have been subtracted from revenue. The formula for profit is:

Profit = Total Revenue − Total Costs

Using Tom’s figures: total revenue is £50, and total costs are 100 cups × £0.20 = £20. Therefore, his profit is:

Profit = £50 − £20 = £30

This £30 is the reward Tom receives for taking risks and running the business. He can use part of it to save for his games console and reinvest the rest to buy more ingredients for the next weekend.

11. Stakeholders |

A stakeholder is any person or group that has an interest in a business. Tom’s lemonade stand has several stakeholders. Customers want a tasty, affordable drink and friendly service. Tom’s parents are interested because they gave him the initial money for supplies and expect him to learn responsibility. Neighbours may be concerned about noise or litter, so Tom must keep the area clean. Even the local council could be a stakeholder if permits are required. Considering stakeholders helps a business make fair decisions and maintain a good reputation.

12. Recommendations and Conclusion |

Based on our analysis, Tom has built a successful small business in its first weekend, earning a £30 profit. To grow further, we can recommend that Tom introduce a new flavour, such as raspberry, based on additional customer surveys. He could also vary his opening hours to catch more afternoon families. Keeping simple financial records would help him track costs and profit more accurately. Most importantly, by reinvesting some profit, he can gradually increase his earnings and reach his £50 goal faster.

This case study has shown how even a simple lemonade stand can bring together many business ideas. From enterprise and adding value to marketing, costing and stakeholder management, Tom’s experience mirrors the decisions real businesses face every day. Practice applying these concepts to other small businesses you see around you, and you will develop a strong foundation for your Edexcel Business journey.
