Year 7 Edexcel Economics: Speaking & Listening Exam Prep |

📚 Year 7 Edexcel Economics: Speaking & Listening Exam Prep |

In the Year 7 Edexcel Economics course, your speaking and listening skills are just as important as your written knowledge. When you discuss economic ideas, listen to real-world examples or present your own views, you show a deeper understanding of concepts like scarcity, choice and trade. This revision guide will help you prepare for the speaking and listening components of your assessment. You will learn how to use key vocabulary accurately, structure clear responses, interpret data and speak with confidence about economic issues.

1. Understanding the Exam Format |

Before you start revising, find out exactly what your speaking and listening test involves. In a typical Edexcel-style assessment, you may be asked to listen to a short recording about a market scenario and answer questions orally, or to take part in a group discussion on a topic such as ‘Should pocket money be linked to chores?’ Some tasks require you to give a one-minute talk on an economic choice, using terms like cost and benefit. Knowing whether you will be assessed individually, in pairs or in a group helps you practise in the right way.

Check how many sections the test has and how much time you get for preparation and speaking. Often, you will have 30 to 60 seconds to read questions before listening, and you may make notes. For the speaking part, there might be a planning card on which you can jot down keywords. Use this preparation time wisely and always keep your notes simple and clear.

2. Building Your Economic Vocabulary |

A strong showing in economics speaking tasks depends on using subject-specific words correctly. Start with the basics: needs, wants, scarcity, resources, goods, services, producer, consumer, supply, demand, price and market. Make flashcards with the term on one side and a simple definition plus an example on the other. For instance, ‘opportunity cost’ means the next best alternative you give up when you make a choice. If you choose to buy a football instead of a book, the opportunity cost is the enjoyment of reading the book.

  • Scarcity – limited resources to meet unlimited wants
  • Supply – the amount of a good or service available
  • Demand – how much people are willing and able to buy
  • Trade-off – giving up one thing to get another

Practise using these words in full sentences aloud. Instead of saying ‘they want more stuff’, you could say, ‘Consumers’ demand for the new video game rose when the price fell.’ Hearing yourself say these phrases will make you more comfortable during the exam.

3. Active Listening Strategies |

Listening tasks in economics often feature a conversation between a buyer and a seller, a shopkeeper explaining a price change, or a short news clip about a local market. To do well, practise active listening. Before the recording starts, read the questions and underline keywords like ‘increase’, ‘main reason’, or ‘effect’. This primes your brain to listen for those specific details.

Economic Signal Words What They Often Introduce
as a result, therefore, so a cause-and-effect relationship
on the other hand, however a contrasting idea or trade-off
for example, such as an illustration or real-world case
the reason is, because of an explanation for an economic decision

While listening, jot down only the most important numbers, names of goods and directional changes, such as ‘price up 10%’ or ‘demand fell after the rain’. You do not need to write full sentences. After the recording finishes, use your notes to answer questions briefly but with key economic words included.

4. Structuring Your Spoken Response |

A clear structure makes your answer easy to follow and shows the examiner you have an organised mind. For a one-minute talk or a discussion, you can use the P-E-E model: Point, Evidence and Explanation. Start by stating your point clearly: ‘I believe raising the price of crisps in the school canteen will reduce demand.’ Then give evidence, which could be a personal example or a simple economic rule: ‘When the price rose last term, fewer students bought them.’ Finally, explain why this happens: ‘This is because students have a limited amount of pocket money and will switch to a cheaper snack.’

For longer discussion tasks, you might also include a counterargument before your conclusion. Try saying, ‘Some might argue that crisps are so popular that demand will not change much. However, since alternatives like popcorn are available, the demand is likely to be elastic.’ Using the word ‘elastic’ here shows subject knowledge and impresses the examiner.

5. Describing Data and Trends |

You may be given a simple table or a bar chart showing, for example, sales of a lemonade stand over a week. The speaking task could be to describe what you see and explain possible economic reasons. Practise phrases like ‘Sales increased steadily from Monday to Wednesday,’ or ‘There was a sharp decline on Thursday, possibly because of heavy rain.’ Use linking words such as ‘whereas’, ‘in contrast’ and ‘overall’ to make your description flow.

Price of Cupcakes vs. Quantity Sold (Daily Average)

Price per Cupcake £0.50 £1.00 £1.50 £2.00
Quantity Sold 30 22 15 9

When you see a table like this, you can say, ‘As the price rose from £0.50 to £2.00, the quantity sold fell from 30 to 9. This shows the law of demand: at a higher price, consumers buy fewer cupcakes, assuming other factors stay the same.’ Always relate the data back to an economic concept you have learned.

6. Comparing Costs and Benefits |

Many speaking tasks ask you to make a choice and justify it, which is the heart of economics. You must weigh up the costs and benefits of each option. The term ‘cost’ here is not just about money; it includes time, effort and the next best thing you give up. Practise sentences like, ‘The benefit of walking to the shops is saving bus money, but the cost is the extra time spent, which I could have used for homework.’ Using cost–benefit thinking shows a mature approach to economic reasoning.

Try to compare at least two options clearly. Say, ‘If I buy the book, I gain knowledge and enjoyment but lose £10 that could have been saved for a football. The opportunity cost of the book is the football.’ Always mention ‘opportunity cost’ explicitly – it is one of the most examined concepts in Year 7 economics.

7. Discussing Economic Choices |

In a group discussion task, you will be given a scenario such as a family deciding how to spend a fixed budget for a weekend trip, or a school council allocating money to new sports equipment or library books. Your job is to contribute ideas, build on others’ points and use economic vocabulary. Start with ‘From an economic point of view…’ or ‘That is a trade-off because…’ to keep the discussion on track.

Remember to listen carefully to your classmates and refer to what they said. You can agree or disagree respectfully: ‘I see your point about why new books are important, but let us think about scarcity. We can’t afford both, so which one gives the greater benefit for the larger number of students?’ This shows you are evaluating, a higher-order skill that examiners look for.

8. Role-Play Scenarios |

Your speaking assessment might include a short role-play where you act as a customer or a shopkeeper. In a market stall role-play, you would negotiate a price, discuss quality and mention demand. For example, as a seller, you might say, ‘These handmade bracelets are very popular right now; the demand is high, which is why the price is £3. But since you are buying two, I can offer you both for £5.’ As a buyer, you could reply, ‘That sounds fair, but I only have £4.50. Can we agree on that?’ This simulates a real economic transaction and lets you show vocabulary like price, demand, negotiation and budget.

Prepare for role-plays by thinking about simple economic situations: buying fruit and vegetables, setting the price of a lemonade cup on a hot day, or deciding whether to pay for a faster delivery. In each case, try to mention supply, demand and any seasonal factors that might affect price or availability.

9. Common Topics to Revise |

Year 7 Edexcel economics speaking and listening tasks often draw on a core set of topics. Make yourself familiar with these areas so that you can respond spontaneously rather than searching for ideas.

  • Needs and wants – sorting everyday items into categories
  • Scarcity and choice – why we cannot have everything
  • Opportunity cost – every choice involves giving something up
  • Supply and demand – how prices are set in a market
  • Producers and consumers – roles in the economy
  • Money and budgeting – managing limited income
  • Saving and spending decisions – short-term vs long-term benefits
  • Simple trade – why countries or people exchange goods

Create a mind map for each topic with at least five related key terms. This visual tool will help you recall vocabulary quickly when you are under pressure during the speaking exam.

10. Practice Tips for Home |

Regular practice at home is essential because speaking and listening are skills developed through repetition. Record yourself speaking for one minute on a topic like ‘the best way to spend £10 at a school fair’. Listen back and check if you used any economic terms and whether your structure was clear. Try to improve with each attempt.

For listening, ask a family member to read out a short news item about a local market or shop while you take notes, then answer questions like ‘What happened to the price of vegetables and why?’ You can also find child-friendly economics podcasts online. Listen for three to five minutes and summarise the main economic point aloud. Just five minutes a day can build your listening stamina.

11. Dealing with Exam Nerves |

Feeling nervous before a speaking test is completely normal and can even help you perform better by keeping you alert. Channel that energy into clear, slow speech. Practise deep breathing before you walk into the exam room: breathe in for four counts, hold for four, and breathe out for four. During the test, if you lose your train of thought, have a filler phrase ready: ‘That is an interesting question; let me think about the economic reasons…’ This buys you time without saying ‘um’ or ‘err’.

Remind yourself that the examiner wants to see what you know, not to catch you out. If you make a small vocabulary mistake, simply correct yourself and continue. You might say, ‘The demand decreased, I mean, increased after the advertising campaign.’ This shows resilience and self-monitoring, which are positive traits.

12. Final Checklist |

In the twenty-four hours before your assessment, run through this checklist to ensure you are ready. Have you revised the definitions of scarcity, opportunity cost, supply and demand? Can you describe a simple data trend using economic language? Do you have at least two cost–benefit examples ready in your mind? Have you practised a short talk with a clear point, evidence and explanation? Is your speaking pace calm and easy to understand? Also, pack your pencil case and student ID the night before so that you are not rushing in the morning.

On the day, arrive a little early, drink water and say a positive sentence to yourself: ‘I have practised and I can explain my economic ideas clearly.’ Confidence comes from preparation, and you have done the work. Show off your knowledge in every answer.
