📚 Year 7 Edexcel Statistics: Core Knowledge Points Review | 七年级 Edexcel 统计:核心知识点梳理

Statistics helps us collect, organise, analyse and interpret data to make sense of the world around us. In Year 7, the Edexcel specification builds a solid foundation in handling data, from choosing the right type of graph to calculating basic averages and understanding probability. This article brings together all the core knowledge points you need to master, with clear explanations in both English and Chinese to support bilingual learners.

1. Understanding Data Types |

Data can be classified into two broad categories. Qualitative (categorical) data describes qualities or categories, such as eye colour, favourite food or car brands. Quantitative (numerical) data deals with numbers and can be further split into discrete and continuous. Discrete data can only take certain values, usually whole numbers, like the number of students in a class or shoe sizes. Continuous data can take any value within a range, such as height, weight or temperature.

2. Collecting Data |

Data can be collected through observations, surveys, questionnaires and experiments. When designing a data collection method, it is crucial to ask clear, unbiased questions and decide whether you need a sample or the whole population. A sample should be representative to avoid misleading conclusions. Record responses carefully using a data collection sheet to keep the information organised.

3. Frequency Tables and Tally Charts |

A frequency table shows how often each value or category occurs. Tally charts help count up large sets of raw data efficiently. Each tally mark stands for one item; we usually group tallies in fives, with the fifth mark crossing the previous four to make counting easier. The frequency column then lists the total count for each category.

4. Bar Charts and Pictograms |

Bar charts are used for categorical or discrete data, with gaps between the bars to show the categories are separate. The height (or length) of each bar represents the frequency. Both axes must be labelled, and the scale should be even. Pictograms use symbols to represent frequencies, with each symbol standing for a set number of items. A key must explain what one symbol represents, and we can draw part of a symbol for fractions of the unit.

5. Pie Charts | 饼图

A pie chart displays proportions of the whole. The entire circle represents 360 degrees, and each sector angle is proportional to its frequency. To calculate the angle for a category, use the formula:

Angle = (Frequency ÷ Total frequency) × 360°

Sum all angles to check they add up to 360°. When drawing, use a protractor and label each sector or include a legend.

6. Line Graphs | 线图

A line graph shows how data changes over time. Time is always plotted on the horizontal x‑axis, and the variable being measured goes on the vertical y‑axis. Points are plotted and joined with straight lines. Line graphs help spot trends and patterns, such as increasing or decreasing values over hours, days or months. Always label axes and give the graph a title.

7. Scatter Graphs and Correlation |

A scatter graph plots pairs of values from two related variables. Each point represents one data pair. Scatter graphs help us see if there is a relationship, or correlation, between the variables. If points generally slope upwards, we have a positive correlation. If they slope downwards, it is a negative correlation. When points show no clear pattern, there is no correlation. In Year 7, we describe the correlation and do not draw lines of best fit.

8. Mean, Median and Mode |

These three values summarise the centre of a data set. The mode is the most frequent value; a set can have more than one mode or no mode at all. The median is the middle value when data are arranged in order. For an odd number of values, it is the central one; for an even number, it is the mean of the two central values. The mean is the arithmetic average.

Mean = (Sum of all data values) ÷ (Number of data values)

Always check that your mean lies between the smallest and largest values in the set.

9. The Range | 极差

The range measures how spread out the data are. It is the difference between the largest and smallest values. A small range tells us data are close together; a large range suggests greater variability. The range is easy to compute and is affected by extreme values (outliers).

Range = Largest value − Smallest value

10. Introduction to Probability |

Probability describes how likely an event is to happen. It lies on a scale from 0 (impossible) to 1 (certain). When all outcomes are equally likely, we can calculate probability using:

Probability of an event = (Number of favourable outcomes) ÷ (Total number of possible outcomes)

Probability can be written as a fraction, decimal or percentage. Words like ‘likely’, ‘unlikely’, ‘evens’ and ‘certain’ are also used to describe chance.

11. Interpreting Charts and Diagrams |

Being able to read and compare information from statistical diagrams is a key skill. When studying a bar chart, pie chart or line graph, always look at the title, axis labels, scales and keys. Identify the highest and lowest values, compare frequencies between categories and check if the diagram is fairly drawn. Misleading graphs may use uneven scales or omit the zero point on the axis.

12. Solving Statistical Problems |

In Year 7, you will often collect real data, present it in a suitable graph and use averages and the range to draw conclusions. A typical investigation might be: ‘Are students in my class taller on average than students in another class?’ Planning, collecting, organising, representing and interpreting data are the steps of a statistical enquiry cycle that you will practise throughout Key Stage 3.
