1. What is Economics? |

Economics is the social science that investigates how people, firms and governments make decisions when resources are limited. It focuses on the production, distribution and consumption of goods and services. Rather than simply describing money, economics studies choices and trade-offs.

A key idea is that every choice involves a cost. When you decide to spend an hour studying economics, you cannot use that same hour to play sport or watch a film. Economics helps us think systematically about such decisions.

2. Scarcity and Choice |

Scarcity exists because resources are finite while human wants are infinite. No matter how wealthy a society becomes, it cannot produce enough to satisfy everyone’s unlimited desires. Scarcity forces individuals and societies to make choices about what to produce, how to produce and for whom to produce.

For example, a farmer has a fixed amount of land. She must decide whether to use it to grow wheat or to raise livestock. That choice illustrates scarcity: she cannot do both on the same plot simultaneously. Economics is fundamentally about managing scarcity.

3. Opportunity Cost |

Opportunity cost is the value of the next best alternative that you give up when making a choice. It is not simply the money spent, but what you sacrifice in terms of other goods, services or experiences. Recognising opportunity cost leads to more informed decision-making.

If a student uses her savings to buy a bicycle instead of a gaming console, the opportunity cost is the enjoyment and use she would have gained from the console. Similarly, when a government spends more on healthcare, the opportunity cost may be fewer resources for education.

4. The Basic Economic Problem |

The basic economic problem arises from the combination of scarcity and unlimited wants. It forces every economy to answer three fundamental questions: what should be produced, how should it be produced, and who should receive the output. These questions apply to all societies, whether they rely on markets or central planning.

In a market economy, consumers and producers answer these questions through their spending and production decisions. In a command economy, the government makes the main decisions. Most real economies are mixed, combining elements of both systems.

5. Factors of Production |

Economists group resources into four factors of production: land, labour, capital and enterprise. Land includes all natural resources such as water, minerals and forests. Labour refers to the human effort, both physical and mental, used in production. Capital consists of man-made tools, machinery and buildings that help produce other goods. Enterprise is the willingness to take risks and bring the other factors together to create value.

An entrepreneur who opens a bakery uses land (the shop), labour (bakers), capital (ovens and mixers) and her own enterprise. Understanding these categories helps explain why some countries produce more than others: they may have a richer endowment of one or more factors.

6. Introduction to Demand and Supply |

Demand represents the quantity of a product that consumers are willing and able to buy at different prices, while supply represents the quantity producers are willing to sell. The law of demand states that, all else being equal, as price rises, quantity demanded falls. The law of supply suggests that as price rises, quantity supplied rises.

These relationships can be shown on a diagram with price on the vertical axis and quantity on the horizontal axis. The demand curve slopes downward, and the supply curve slopes upward. Together they explain how markets find an equilibrium price.

7. Markets and Prices |

A market is any place or mechanism that brings buyers and sellers together. It does not have to be a physical location; online platforms are markets too. Prices act as signals that coordinate the decisions of consumers and producers. When demand for a good increases and supply cannot keep up immediately, prices tend to rise, signalling producers to supply more.

Conversely, if producers supply more than consumers want to buy, prices tend to fall. This encourages consumers to buy more and discourages producers from overproducing. Adam Smith referred to this automatic adjustment as the ‘invisible hand’ of the market.

8. Money and Its Functions |

Before money, barter was used, but it required a double coincidence of wants. Money solved this problem by serving three main functions. Firstly, money is a medium of exchange, meaning it is widely accepted as payment for goods and services. Secondly, it is a unit of account, allowing us to compare the value of different products. Thirdly, money acts as a store of value, so it can be saved and used later.

Today, money takes many forms: coins, banknotes and digital balances. For money to be effective, it should be durable, portable, divisible and widely accepted. Inflation, however, can weaken the store-of-value function.

9. Specialisation and Trade |

Specialisation occurs when individuals, firms or countries concentrate on producing a limited range of goods or services rather than trying to be self-sufficient. By focusing on what they do best, they increase efficiency and output. Specialisation makes trade essential, because a specialist cannot consume all the goods they produce and needs others to obtain the goods they do not produce.

A carpenter who builds furniture might exchange a table for vegetables grown by a farmer. Both benefit from the trade by obtaining goods they could not produce as efficiently themselves. This division of labour, as described by Adam Smith, boosts overall productivity.

10. Personal Finance: Budgeting and Saving |

Personal finance involves managing your income and expenditure. A budget is a plan that shows how much money you expect to receive and how you intend to spend it. Creating and sticking to a budget helps individuals avoid debt, achieve goals and prepare for unexpected expenses.

Saving means setting aside a portion of current income for future use. People save for various reasons: to buy a large item, to cope with emergencies or to build a retirement fund. Even small, regular amounts can grow over time thanks to compound interest.

Practical financial skills, such as distinguishing between needs and wants, recording expenses and comparing prices, are vital for good decision-making. These habits, developed early, lay the groundwork for a secure financial future.
