Welcome to your case study practice for Year 7 OCR Media Studies. In this article, we will guide you through a full, step‑by‑step analysis of a movie poster. Media case studies help you understand how producers use visual language, representation and audience targeting to create meaning. By the end, you will be able to apply the same skills to any media text you encounter – whether it is a film poster, a video‑game cover or an advertisement.

1. Understanding the Case Study Approach |

A case study is not just about describing what you see. In OCR Media Studies, you need to ask three key questions: What media language is being used? How are people, places and ideas represented? Who is the target audience and how are they being attracted? Answering these questions turns a simple poster into a rich, meaningful text.

For Year 7, we will focus on the visual and written codes you can easily spot: images, colours, fonts, camera angles and slogans. We will also begin to think about the institution behind the poster – the company that made the film and how it wants to present itself.

2. Introducing the Poster: ‘The Last Voyage’ |

Our case study centres on a fictional poster for a sci‑fi adventure film called The Last Voyage. The poster features a huge spaceship disappearing into a swirling purple nebula. In the foreground, a young astronaut stands on a rocky asteroid, holding a glowing staff. Beside them, a mysterious alien creature with translucent skin looks towards the stars. The tagline reads: ‘One journey. One chance. One destiny.’

At the bottom of the poster, we find the film’s title in metallic, futuristic lettering, the release date and the studio logo: StarFrame Studios. Every element on this poster has been placed there for a reason. Our job is to work out why.

3. Visual Elements: Images and Graphics |

The most striking visual is the central spaceship, drawn using sharp diagonal lines that convey speed and danger. The ship’s engines glow bright blue, drawing the audience’s eye immediately. This use of a ‘burst’ of light is a media language device called a visual anchor – it fixes your attention on the most important part of the image.

Below the ship, the asteroid and the two characters create a triangular composition. The astronaut’s glowing staff adds a second source of light, highlighting the face of the alien. Artists often use this technique to suggest that two characters share a special bond or a common mission. Here it suggests teamwork between human and non‑human life.

4. Colour and Lighting: Setting the Mood |

Colour is a powerful tool in media texts. The poster uses a limited palette of deep purples, blacks and electric blues. Purple often represents mystery, magic and the unknown, while blue suggests technology, calm and intelligence. Together they create a mood that is both epic and slightly mysterious – perfect for a space adventure.

Lighting also plays a key role. The scene uses high‑contrast ‘chiaroscuro’ lighting: bright engine flares against a very dark background. This directs your eyes exactly where the designer wants them to go. The soft glow around the alien creature makes it appear gentle and wise, in contrast to the cold, metallic ship.

5. Composition and Camera Angles |

Look at where the elements are placed. The spaceship occupies the top third of the poster, following the rule of thirds. This gives the ship a sense of dominance, as if it is watching over the characters below. The astronaut and alien are placed in the lower third, grounding the scene and making them feel relatable.

The implied camera angle is a low‑angle shot, looking up at the characters and the ship. Low angles make subjects appear powerful, heroic and larger than life. If the poster had used a high‑angle shot looking down, the characters would have seemed small and vulnerable. The choice of a low angle tells us that this story is about courage and strength.

6. Typography and Written Codes |

The film’s title, The Last Voyage, appears in a custom sans‑serif font with sharp, angular edges and a metallic gradient. This typographic style is common in science‑fiction posters because it feels advanced, technological and slightly cold. The letters are spaced widely (tracking), making the title feel grand and important.

The tagline uses a smaller, italic font placed just below the title. It reads like a whispered promise, creating intrigue. Written codes like these are a quick way to communicate the genre and emotional tone of a film. Even the studio logo is designed in a sleek, minimalist style to match the futuristic theme.

7. Representation of Characters |

Character representation is about how the poster invites us to think about the people (and aliens) we see. The astronaut is young, wearing a suit without a helmet, and their expression is determined yet kind. This representation challenges the typical ‘tough space hero’ image and instead offers a relatable, emotionally open protagonist.

The alien is represented not as a monster but as a wise companion. Its large, reflective eyes and calm posture follow the convention of the ‘gentle alien’ often seen in family‑friendly sci‑fi. This choice tells us the film is likely to be about friendship and understanding rather than violence and fear.

8. Targeting the Audience |

The poster targets a broad family audience, typical for an adventure film rated PG or 12. The bright, glowing colours appeal to younger viewers, while the epic scale of the spaceship and the mysterious nebula attract older fans of science fiction. The presence of a strong team – one human, one alien – also signals inclusivity and appeals to parents looking for positive messages.

Additionally, the tagline ‘One journey. One chance. One destiny.’ uses the rule of three, a persuasive language technique that is easy to remember and emotionally stirring. This helps the poster stick in the mind of the audience, encouraging them to find out more online or watch the trailer.

9. Institutional Context and Branding |

The institution behind the film is StarFrame Studios, a fictional company known for high‑quality visual effects and story‑driven family films. By placing its sleek logo at the bottom of the poster, the studio builds brand recognition. Audiences who have enjoyed previous StarFrame films will see the logo and instantly trust the quality of this new release.

Institutional context also includes the funding, production and distribution of the film. Even a fictional case study allows us to ask: is this a big‑budget blockbuster or a smaller, independent film? The polished CGI graphics on the poster suggest a large budget and wide distribution, which helps explain its broad audience appeal and global release strategy.

10. Practice Analysis: Apply What You’ve Learned |

Now it is your turn. Imagine a different poster for a mystery film set in a Victorian city. The image shows a tall detective standing under a gas lamp, holding a magnifying glass. The foggy background is full of silhouettes. The title is in a serif font with ornamental lines, and the colour palette is sepia and burnt orange.

Using the ideas from sections 3 to 9, write a short analysis on a piece of paper or on screen. Try to answer these questions:

  • What do the colours suggest about the mood and genre?
  • How does the composition direct your eye?
  • What kind of detective is being represented?
  • Who is the target audience and how do the written codes appeal to them?

When you have finished, you could swap your analysis with a classmate or check it against the key concepts of media language, representation and audience. The more you practise case study skills, the easier it becomes to see the hidden messages in all the media around you.
