1. Day 1: Setting Your Revision Goals |

Start your revision journey by defining clear, achievable goals. Ask yourself what you want to accomplish by the end of the break – perhaps mastering key terms, improving your ability to explain business concepts or tackling calculation questions with ease.

Write down at least three specific targets. For example, “I will be able to list and give examples of the four factors of production” or “I can calculate profit and loss from given figures.” Having a goal sheet will keep you motivated.

Remember to make your goals SMART: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time-bound. This approach works not only for revision but also for any business plan you might create later.

2. Day 2: What Is Business? |

A business is any organisation that provides goods or services to satisfy the needs and wants of customers. The main aim of most businesses is to make a profit, but some also pursue social or environmental goals.

Goods are physical items you can touch, such as a pencil or a smartphone. Services are intangible actions performed for you, like a haircut or a bus journey. Think about what businesses you encounter each day and classify them.

On this day, create a mind map centred on ‘Business’ with branches for goods, services, needs and wants. Add examples from your own experience and notice how many businesses operate to meet everyday demands.

3. Day 3: Needs and Wants |

Distinguishing between needs and wants is a fundamental business concept. Needs are essential for survival – food, water, shelter and clothing. Wants are items we desire but do not require to live, such as video games or designer trainers.

Businesses thrive by identifying both. A supermarket sells bread (need) alongside luxury ice cream (want). Understanding this helps companies decide what to produce and how to market their products to different customers.

To reinforce your learning, draw two columns and list ten items you have used today. Place each item into the ‘Need’ or ‘Want’ category. You will see that many everyday items are actually wants.

4. Day 4: Goods and Services |

Building on Day 2, deepen your understanding of goods and services. Goods can be durable, like a bicycle, or non-durable, like a chocolate bar. Services rely on the skills and time of people, such as teaching or banking.

Create a table comparing the features of goods and services. For goods, note that they can be stored, returned and owned. For services, highlight that they are consumed at the time of production and cannot be physically possessed.

Find an example of a business that sells both – for instance, a restaurant provides a good (food) and a service (table service). How does mixing the two add value? Discuss your ideas with a family member.

5. Day 5: Factors of Production |

Every business needs resources to create products. These are grouped into four factors of production: land, labour, capital and enterprise. Land includes natural resources such as water, oil and forests.

Labour is the human effort – both physical and mental – used in production. Capital refers to man-made tools and equipment, like machines, computers and factory buildings. Enterprise is the ability to bring the other three factors together, taking risks to start and run a business.

Imagine you are opening a bakery. List what you need under each factor. Land: wheat, water. Labour: baker, cashier. Capital: oven, till. Enterprise: your business idea and management skills. This exercise links theory to real life.

6. Day 6: Introduction to Markets |

A market exists wherever buyers and sellers exchange goods or services. It does not have to be a physical place – online marketplaces are equally important today. Understanding markets helps businesses decide on pricing and who their customers are.

Markets can be local, national or global. A farmer selling vegetables at a Saturday market is part of a local market, while a software company selling apps worldwide operates in a global market.

Draw a simple diagram showing the flow of goods, money and information between businesses and households. Label the two sides: ‘buyers/consumers’ and ‘sellers/producers’. Reflect on how online reviews and adverts affect your own buying decisions.

7. Day 7: Demand and Supply |

Demand is the quantity of a product that consumers are willing and able to buy at various prices. Generally, as price rises, demand falls – this is the law of demand. Supply is how much producers are ready to offer at different prices; as price rises, supply usually increases.

The interaction of demand and supply determines the market price. If demand exceeds supply, prices tend to rise. If supply outstrips demand, prices fall. The point where they balance is called the equilibrium price.

To practise, consider a new games console released just before Christmas. Explain what happens to demand, supply and price during the holiday season compared to a quiet month like February. Write a short paragraph using the terms correctly.

8. Day 8: Entrepreneurs and Business Types |

Entrepreneurs are people who spot opportunities and take risks to set up new businesses. They combine the factors of production and are often described as innovators and job creators. Research a local entrepreneur and note the skills they used to succeed.

Businesses can take several legal forms. A sole trader is owned and run by one person – simple to set up but with unlimited liability. A partnership involves two or more people sharing decisions and profits. Private limited companies have separate legal identity, which protects owners’ personal assets.

Create a comparison chart for sole trader, partnership and private limited company. Include headings: number of owners, liability, access to capital and decision-making. Use a textbook or reliable online source to fill in the details.

9. Day 9: Costs, Revenue and Profit |

To survive, a business must manage its finances. Total costs are all the expenses a business incurs, such as rent, wages and raw materials. Total revenue is the money coming in from selling goods or services. Profit is the positive difference between the two.

Here is the fundamental equation every business student must know:

Profit = Total Revenue – Total Costs

If total revenue is £2,000 and total costs are £1,500, the business makes a profit of £500. If costs exceed revenue, the business suffers a loss. Practice with different numbers to see how changes in costs or sales affect profit.

Consider the following scenario: a school tuck shop sells 100 snacks at £1 each, and the snacks cost £0.60 each to buy. Other costs (napkins, electricity) total £10. Calculate total revenue, total costs and profit. Show all your workings.

10. Day 10: Revision Techniques and Practice |

Throughout the break, combine active revision methods with regular recall. After studying each topic, close your notes and write a summary without looking. This forces your brain to retrieve information, strengthening memory.

Use flashcards for key terms: write the word on one side and the definition plus an example on the other. Test yourself daily. Past papers and practice questions from the SQA website or your class teacher are invaluable for checking understanding.

Create a quick 10-question quiz covering each day’s main idea. For instance, “State the four factors of production,” or “What is the difference between goods and services?” Answer in full sentences as you would in an exam.

Lastly, reward yourself for completing the plan. A well-earned break improves focus for the new term. You are now better equipped with a solid business foundation.
