📚 Year 7 SQA History: Answering Techniques and Marking Criteria | Year 7 SQA

Developing strong answering techniques and understanding marking criteria are essential for success in Year 7 SQA History. This article will guide you through the key skills needed to tackle history questions with confidence, from interpreting command words to crafting well-structured answers. By mastering these skills, you will not only improve your grades but also become a more effective historian.

1. Understanding the Question |

Before you start writing, take a moment to read the question carefully. Identify the command word, which tells you exactly what the examiner wants you to do. Common command words in SQA History include ‘describe’, ‘explain’, ‘compare’, ‘evaluate’ and ‘to what extent’.

‘Describe’ means you should give a detailed account of an event, person or development. Focus on what happened, when and who was involved. ‘Explain’ goes further by asking you to give reasons or causes behind an event. You need to show how and why something occurred.

‘Compare’ requires you to identify similarities and differences between two or more things. ‘Evaluate’ asks you to make a judgement about the importance or significance of something, supported by evidence. ‘To what extent’ invites you to consider how far you agree with a statement, presenting both sides before reaching a conclusion.

Always underline or highlight the command word and key terms in the question to keep you focused. This simple step helps prevent off-topic answers.

2. Describing Events Accurately |

When asked to describe an event, organise your answer in a logical order, usually chronological. Present facts clearly and avoid jumping between time periods. Use specific dates, names of people and places to add precision.

For example, if describing the Battle of Bannockburn (1314), you could mention that it took place near Stirling, was fought between the Scots led by Robert the Bruce and the English under Edward II, and resulted in a decisive Scottish victory. Stick to the most important details.

Avoid the temptation to explain causes or consequences in a pure description question unless the command word allows it. Describing means painting a picture of what happened, not why it happened.

3. Explaining Causes and Consequences |

Explaining is a higher-order skill. You need to show causal links. Start by stating a cause, then elaborate on how it led to the event. Use linking phrases such as ‘this led to’, ‘as a result’, ‘consequently’ and ‘because’.

For instance, to explain the causes of the Scottish Wars of Independence, you might write: ‘The death of Alexander III in 1286 left no clear heir, which created a succession crisis. This led to Edward I of England being invited to arbitrate, but he used the opportunity to assert overlordship, causing Scottish resistance.’ This chain of events shows clear cause and effect.

When discussing consequences, distinguish between short-term and long-term impacts. A short-term consequence of the Reformation in Scotland was the destruction of monasteries, while long-term consequences included the establishment of the Presbyterian Church and changes in education.

4. Analysing Primary and Secondary Sources |

Source analysis questions are common. You may be shown a written extract, an image, a map or a cartoon. Start by identifying the source type – is it a primary source (from the time) or a secondary source (written later)?

Then examine the content: what information does the source provide? What is the author’s perspective? Is it biased or reliable? For Year 7, a simplified approach using ‘OPV’ (Origin, Purpose, Value) can be helpful: note who made it, when, why, and what we can learn from it.

For example, a diary entry from a Jacobite soldier after the Battle of Culloden would be a primary source. It might be valuable for understanding personal experiences but could be biased against the government forces. Always support your analysis with quotes or details from the source.

5. Using Evidence to Support Your Points |

In history, every claim you make should be backed up by evidence. This could be a specific fact, a statistic, a quotation from a source or a reference to an event. Without evidence, your argument is weak.

Use the PEE structure: Point, Evidence, Explanation. Make your point first, then back it up with specific evidence, and finally explain how that evidence supports your point. For example: ‘Mary Queen of Scots was seen as a threat to Elizabeth I (Point). There were several Catholic plots to put Mary on the English throne, such as the Ridolfi Plot of 1571 (Evidence). This shows that Mary’s presence encouraged rebellion, forcing Elizabeth to keep her imprisoned (Explanation).’

When using sources, always cite them briefly, e.g. ‘According to Source A…’ This shows the examiner you are engaging with the materials provided.

6. Comparing and Contrasting |

Comparison questions require you to identify both similarities and differences. Start by making a quick
