1. Scarcity and Choice |

Scarcity is the fundamental economic problem. It exists because the resources we use to produce goods and services – such as land, labour and raw materials – are limited, but human wants are virtually unlimited.

Because resources are scarce, every society, business and individual must make choices about how to allocate them. Deciding to use time to study economics instead of playing sport is a personal example of a choice driven by scarcity.

Economics is the study of these choices. It examines how people use scarce resources to satisfy their needs and wants, and the consequences of those decisions.

2. Needs and Wants |

A need is something that is essential for survival. Basic human needs include nutritious food, clean water, adequate shelter, warm clothing and access to healthcare. Without these, life cannot be sustained.

A want, on the other hand, is a desire for a good or service that is not necessary for survival. Wants are shaped by individual preferences, culture and advertising. Examples include designer trainers, a games console, or an overseas holiday.

In economics, it is important to distinguish between the two because when incomes are low, people must prioritise needs. Businesses also think carefully about whether their products are responding to needs or wants when planning production.

3. Goods and Services |

Goods are physical, tangible items that can be seen and touched. They are produced using resources and can be bought and sold. Consumer goods include food, furniture and smartphones, while capital goods are equipment used to make other products, such as factory machinery.

Services are intangible activities that one person or business performs for another. When you receive a service, you do not own a physical object. Examples are a haircut, a bus journey, a live music concert, or the work of a teacher.

Some goods are durable, meaning they last a long time, like a bicycle, while non-durable goods are used up quickly, like a chocolate bar. Both goods and services together make up the output of an economy.

4. Factors of Production |

The factors of production are the resources used to create goods and services. They are commonly grouped into four categories: land, labour, capital and enterprise.

Land refers to all natural resources provided by nature. This includes the surface soil, minerals under the ground, forests, water and oil reserves. The reward paid to owners of land is called rent.

Labour is the human effort, both physical and mental, contributed to production. Factory workers, doctors and software developers all provide labour. The payment for labour is wages or salaries.

Capital is any man-made resource used to produce other goods and services. This includes tools, machinery, office buildings and technology. Interest is the reward for the use of capital.

Enterprise, or entrepreneurship, is the ability to combine land, labour and capital, take risks, and innovate to create new products or businesses. The reward for successful enterprise is profit.

5. Opportunity Cost |

Opportunity cost is a core concept in economics. It refers to the value of the next best alternative that is forgone when a choice is made. Because resources are scarce, every decision involves an opportunity cost.

For a student, spending an evening revising means giving up the chance to watch a film or hang out with friends. The opportunity cost is the enjoyment or benefit lost from the next best activity not chosen.

Governments also face opportunity costs. If a government decides to spend more money on building new hospitals, it may have to spend less on education or defence. The opportunity cost is the reduction in the next best public service.

Considering opportunity cost helps individuals and organisations make more rational decisions by comparing what is gained with what is sacrificed.

6. Demand and Supply |

Demand represents the quantity of a good or service that consumers are both willing and able to purchase at a range of different prices over a given time period. It is not just a want; a consumer must have the money to back it up.

The law of demand states that, all other factors being equal, as the price of a good rises, the quantity demanded falls. Conversely, when price falls, quantity demanded rises. This inverse relationship is driven by affordability and substitution effects.

Supply is the quantity of a good or service that producers are willing and able to offer for sale at different prices. The law of supply says that as price increases, quantity supplied increases, because higher prices can cover higher production costs and generate more profit.

Market equilibrium occurs at the price where quantity demanded equals quantity supplied. At this point there is no surplus or shortage, and both buyers and sellers are satisfied.

7. Price and Market |

Price is the amount of money that a buyer pays and a seller receives in exchange for one unit of a good or service. Prices act as signals in an economy, guiding the decisions of consumers and producers.

A market is any arrangement – physical or online – that brings buyers and sellers together to exchange goods, services or resources. It does not have to be a single location; the global market for smartphones exists through websites, shops and trade agreements.

In competitive markets, prices are determined mainly by the interaction of demand and supply. A sudden increase in demand for a new game can push its price up, while an oversupply of strawberries tends to drive prices down.

Understanding how prices emerge from markets helps explain why some goods are expensive and others cheap. It also shows why prices change over time with shifts in demand or supply.

8. Money and Banking |

Money is anything that is widely accepted as a means of payment for goods and services. For it to work well, money must serve three main functions: a medium of exchange, a store of value, and a unit of account. Without money, economies would rely on barter, which is very inefficient.

A bank is a financial institution that accepts deposits from customers and uses these funds to provide loans to individuals and businesses. By channelling savings into productive investment, banks play a vital role in supporting economic activity.

Interest is a key term in banking. For a saver, interest is the reward for depositing money with a bank. For a borrower, interest is the cost of taking out a loan, expressed as a percentage of the amount borrowed annually.

Modern banks also offer electronic payment services, debit cards and online banking, making it easier for people to manage money and make transactions without using cash.

9. Budgeting, Saving and Spending |

A budget is a financial plan that estimates expected income and outlines planned spending over a set period, usually a week or a month. Governments, businesses and households all use budgets to ensure they do not spend more than they can afford.

Spending refers to using money to buy goods and services. Consumer spending accounts for a large portion of economic activity and is influenced by income levels, confidence and wants. Responsible spending means prioritising needs and planning purchases.

Saving is the portion of income that is not spent on consumption but set aside for future use. People save for emergencies, large future purchases, or to earn interest. High levels of saving can provide funds for investment, but too much saving immediately can reduce current demand in the economy.

Learning to balance saving and spending through a simple budget is an essential skill for personal finance and a key idea in introductory economics.

10. Introduction to Economic Systems |

An economic system is the way a society organises the production, distribution and consumption of goods and services. The three main types are traditional, command and market economies, though most real economies are mixed.

In a traditional economy, customs, habits and rituals decide what to produce, how to produce and for whom. These systems are common in some rural and tribal communities where farming, hunting and gathering follow long-established patterns.

A command economy relies on a central authority, typically the government, to make all major economic decisions. The state owns most resources and enterprises and plans output and prices. Cuba and North Korea are modern examples, though many command elements can appear in mixed systems.

In a market economy, decisions about production and consumption are driven by the choices of private individuals and firms, with prices coordinating activity. The United Kingdom has a mixed economy that uses market mechanisms but also includes government intervention to provide public goods like healthcare and education, correct market failures, and promote fairness.
