1. Map Skills |
Maps are the most basic tool of a geographer. They are simplified representations of the real world, drawn to scale and using symbols. Every map has a title, a key (or legend), a compass rose or north arrow, and a scale. The title tells you what the map shows. The key explains the meaning of the symbols used, such as blue lines for rivers, green shading for woodland, or a small aeroplane symbol for an airport. Symbols help to avoid cluttering the map with too many words. The compass points show direction: the four cardinal points are North, South, East, and West. There are also four intercardinal points: NE, SE, SW, and NW.
When giving directions, we describe them using compass points. For example, “The supermarket is north of the school.” We can also use more precise bearings measured in degrees clockwise from north. For Year 7, you need to be comfortable using the eight-point compass. Understanding direction helps you to describe routes and locate features. In the WJEC exam, you might be asked to identify the direction of one place from another on a simple map.
2. Grid References and Scale |
Ordnance Survey (OS) maps use a grid system formed by vertical lines called eastings and horizontal lines called northings. Each grid square represents a square kilometre on the ground. To give a four-figure grid reference, you first read the easting number (along the corridor) and then the northing number (up the stairs). This identifies the whole grid square. For a more precise location, six-figure grid references are used. You imagine each grid square is divided into tenths, so you give the easting first (including the tenths), then the northing (including the tenths). For example, a church might be at 176 349: easting 17 and 6 tenths, northing 34 and 9 tenths.
Scale expresses the relationship between a distance on a map and the real distance on the ground. A large-scale map, such as 1:10 000, shows a small area in great detail (e.g., a town centre). A small-scale map, such as 1:1 000 000, shows a large area with less detail (e.g., a whole country). Scale can be shown as a ratio (1:25 000), a written statement (‘4 cm to 1 km’), or a linear scale bar. In Year 7, you learn to measure straight-line distances using a ruler and the scale bar. Remember, for curved distances along a road or river, you can use a piece of string or the edge of a paper to follow the curve, then measure the string against the scale.
3. Weather and Climate |
Weather is the day-to-day condition of the atmosphere at a particular place and time. It includes temperature, precipitation (rain, snow, sleet, hail), wind speed and direction, cloud cover, and atmospheric pressure. Weather can change from hour to hour. Climate is the average weather conditions of a place taken over a long period of time, usually 30 years. The United Kingdom has a temperate maritime climate, which means cool, wet winters and mild, wet summers, influenced by the sea. Other climates include tropical, polar, desert, and continental.
Weather elements are measured by different instruments. A thermometer measures temperature in degrees Celsius (°C). A rain gauge collects precipitation and measures it in millimetres (mm). A barometer measures atmospheric pressure in millibars (mb). An anemometer records wind speed, and a wind vane shows wind direction. Cloud cover is estimated in oktas, which are eighths of the sky covered by cloud. Recording weather data consistently allows us to identify patterns and draw climate graphs. A climate graph combines a line graph for temperature with a bar chart for rainfall for each month of the year.
4. Climate Zones | 气候带
The world can be divided into several major climate zones based on latitude, distance from the sea, and altitude. Near the Equator, the sun’s rays are most concentrated, giving a hot tropical climate. Tropical rainforests are found here, with high temperatures and heavy rainfall all year round. Moving away from the Equator, we find hot deserts at around 30°N and 30°S of the Equator. These have very little rainfall, large temperature ranges between day and night, and sparse vegetation. Temperate zones lie between the tropics and the polar circles, with distinct seasons and moderate rainfall. The UK is in this zone. At the highest latitudes, polar climates are extremely cold with ice and tundra.
Altitude also affects climate. As height above sea level increases, temperature decreases. This is why there can be snow on the tops of high mountains even in tropical Africa. The UK’s climate is also influenced by the North Atlantic Drift, a warm ocean current that keeps western coastal areas milder in winter than they would otherwise be. Within climate zones, local factors like prevailing wind direction and relief can cause variations, creating microclimates. A south-facing slope in a city park, for example, may be warmer and sunnier than a north-facing slope in the same area.
5. Rivers and Their Features |
A river basin is the area of land drained by a river and its tributaries. The boundary of a river basin is called the watershed. A river’s journey from source to mouth can be divided into three courses: upper, middle, and lower. In the upper course, near the source, the river is usually fast-flowing, narrow, and tumbles over steep slopes. Typical landforms here include V-shaped valleys, interlocking spurs, and waterfalls. Waterfalls often form where a band of hard rock lies over softer rock, causing differential erosion and creating a steep drop.
In the middle course, the gradient is less steep. The river channel is wider and deeper, and it begins to meander (bend). Meanders are sweeping curves that develop as the river erodes the outer bank and deposits material on the inner bank. The fastest flow is on the outside of the bend, where a river cliff can form, while the inside has a gentle slope called a slip-off slope or point bar. The lower course has a very gentle slope. The river is wide, deep, and slow-moving. Floodplains are wide and flat areas of land on either side of the river, built up by layers of alluvium deposited during floods. At the mouth, the river may form an estuary or, if conditions are right, a delta where sediment is dropped as the river meets the sea.
6. Erosion, Transportation, and Deposition |
Rivers shape the landscape through three main processes: erosion, transportation, and deposition. Erosion is the wearing away of the river bed and banks. There are four types of erosion. Hydraulic action is the sheer force of water hitting the banks and loosening material. Abrasion (also called corrasion) is when the river’s load of pebbles and stones scrapes and scours the bed and banks like sandpaper. Attrition is the process where rocks carried by the river smash into each other and become smaller, smoother, and rounder. Solution (or corrosion) is when slightly acidic water dissolves certain rocks such as limestone.
Transportation is how the river moves its load. Traction is when large boulders and rocks are rolled along the river bed. Saltation is when smaller pebbles and stones are bounced along the bed. Suspension is when fine particles of silt and clay are carried within the water. Solution is when dissolved materials are transported invisibly. Deposition occurs when the river loses energy and can no longer carry its load. This happens when flow slows down, such as on the inside of a meander, where the river enters a lake or sea, or during periods of low flow. The largest, heaviest particles are deposited first, followed by finer material. This is called sorting.
7. Settlement Types and Patterns |
A settlement is a place where people live. Settlements vary in size from a single farm to a megacity. In geography, we study the site and situation of settlements. The site is the actual land on which a settlement is built, including physical features such as flat land, water supply, and natural shelter. The situation describes the settlement’s location in relation to other places and features, such as being at a bridging point on a river, near a forest for timber, or at a route centre. Historically, many settlements grew at defensive sites, such as hilltops, or at wet-point sites in dry areas where water was available.
Settlement patterns describe the arrangement of buildings. A dispersed pattern features isolated houses or farms scattered across the countryside. A linear settlement follows a line such as a road, river, or coastline. A nucleated settlement is clustered around a central point, like a crossroads, market place, or church. The shape and pattern of a settlement often reflect its history and function. Urbanisation is the process by which an increasing proportion of a country’s population lives in towns and cities. In the United Kingdom, most people live in urban areas, but rural settlements remain important for agriculture and recreation.
8. Population and Migration |
Geography also explores how many people live in an area and why. Population density is the number of people per square kilometre. Places with high population density, such as cities, have many people living close together. This is often due to flat land, good job opportunities, and excellent transport links. Places with low population density, such as mountains or deserts, may be sparsely populated because of steep relief, extreme climates, or poor soils. The population distribution shows how people are spread out across an area. In the UK, the population is densest in the south-east of England around London and in other major cities like Birmingham and Manchester.
Migration is the movement of people from one place to another with the intention of settling temporarily or permanently. People may move within a country (internal migration) or between countries (international migration). Push factors are reasons that make people want to leave a place, such as unemployment, war, poor housing, or natural disasters. Pull factors are attractions that draw people to a new area, such as better jobs, higher wages, good schools, safety, or a pleasant climate. In Year 7, you learn about rural-to-urban migration, which is a major cause of urbanisation in many parts of the world. Understanding migration helps to explain changing population patterns and the diversity of communities.
9. Environmental Issues and Sustainability |
Human activities interact with the natural environment, sometimes causing damage. Key environmental issues at Year 7 level include pollution, deforestation, and climate change. Pollution can affect air, water, and land. For example, vehicle exhausts release gases that cause poor air quality; factories may discharge chemicals into rivers; plastic waste pollutes oceans and harms wildlife. Deforestation, the cutting down of forests on a large scale, reduces biodiversity and can lead to soil erosion and increased carbon dioxide in the atmosphere because trees absorb CO₂. Climate change refers to long-term shifts in temperatures and weather patterns, largely caused by human emissions of greenhouse gases.
Sustainability means meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. This can be achieved by using renewable resources, reducing waste, recycling, and protecting ecosystems. In geography, we study sustainable practices like using wind and solar energy, building with sustainable materials, and designing cities with green spaces and efficient public transport. Even simple actions such as switching off lights when not in use, walking or cycling instead of taking a car for short distances, and reducing single-use plastics contribute to sustainability. Year 7 students learn that everyone has a role in protecting the environment for the future.
10. Fieldwork Skills |
Fieldwork is an essential part of geography that involves collecting data outside the classroom. It allows students to apply their knowledge to real places and develop practical skills. Before going out, you must plan your enquiry: choose a topic, formulate questions or hypotheses, and decide what data you need to collect. Data can be primary (collected first-hand through observations, measurements, or questionnaires) or secondary (obtained from books, maps, or websites). During fieldwork, you might record traffic counts, measure river width and depth, sketch landscapes, conduct land use surveys, or ask local people questions.
After collecting data, it needs to be presented clearly. You might draw bar charts, line graphs, or pie charts to show numerical data. Annotated sketches and maps help to show spatial patterns. The next step is analysis – looking for patterns, relationships, or anomalies. Finally, you reach conclusions that answer your original questions, and evaluate the reliability of your methods. For example, if you studied footpath erosion near your school, you might conclude that trampling is worse on paths leading to a popular viewpoint, and note that more visits at different times would improve reliability. Fieldwork ties together many other geography topics and helps develop critical thinking.
