1. Chronology and Timeline |
Chronology is the arrangement of events in the order they happened. Historians use timelines to show the sequence of events and to understand how one event led to another.
We use BC (Before Christ) and AD (Anno Domini) to date events. The year 1066 is in the 11th century AD, and you should know how centuries are calculated (e.g., 1348 is the 14th century).
我们用 BC(公元前)和 AD(公元)来标注事件日期。
In Year 7, you will study the medieval period from the Norman Conquest in 1066 to the start of the Tudor dynasty in 1485. Key dates include 1086 (Domesday Book), 1215 (Magna Carta), 1348 (Black Death), and 1381 (Peasants’ Revolt).
2. Historical Sources: Primary and Secondary |
A primary source is a piece of evidence from the period you are studying, such as a document, artefact, or a picture created at the time. Examples include the Bayeux Tapestry and the Domesday Book.
A secondary source is evidence created later by someone who did not experience the event, like a modern textbook or a documentary. Historians use both types of sources to build interpretations.
When using sources, you need to consider their reliability and the purpose of the author. Was the author biased? Was the source written to persuade or to record truth? These questions are part of source analysis.
3. The Succession Crisis of 1066 | 1066年的王位继承危机
When King Edward the Confessor died in January 1066 without a clear heir, there were three main claimants to the English throne: Harold Godwinson, Earl of Wessex; William, Duke of Normandy; and Harald Hardrada, King of Norway.
Harold Godwinson claimed that Edward had promised him the throne on his deathbed and was crowned king the day after Edward’s death. William claimed that Edward had earlier promised him the crown and that Harold had sworn an oath to support his claim.
Harald Hardrada’s claim was based on a previous Viking king’s agreement. This crisis led to two invasions in 1066: first by Hardrada and then by William.
4. The Battle of Hastings, 1066 |
Harold’s army first defeated Hardrada at the Battle of Stamford Bridge in the north of England. Then Harold had to march his tired soldiers quickly south to face William’s invasion at Hastings.
At the Battle of Hastings on 14 October 1066, William’s Norman army used cavalry, archers, and a tactic of feigned retreats to break the English shield wall. Harold was killed, traditionally by an arrow in the eye, and the Normans won.
The Bayeux Tapestry is a primary source that tells the story of the Norman Conquest through embroidered scenes, showing the events leading up to and including the battle.
5. William the Conqueror and the Feudal System |
After his victory, William was crowned king on Christmas Day 1066. To control England, he introduced the Feudal System, a way of organising society based on land and loyalty.
In the Feudal System, the king owned all the land. He gave land to his tenants-in-chief (barons and bishops) in return for loyalty, soldiers, and taxes. These nobles then granted land to knights, who in turn allowed peasants to farm the land.
The Domesday Book of 1086 was a great survey that recorded who owned what land, how much it was worth, and how many animals there were. It helped William raise taxes and maintain control.
6. Castles in Norman England |
To secure his hold on England, William built many castles. The earliest were motte and bailey castles: a wooden keep on a raised mound (motte) with an enclosed yard (bailey), protected by a ditch and palisade.
Motte and bailey castles could be built quickly from local materials, but they were vulnerable to fire. Over time, many were replaced by stone keep castles, such as the White Tower at the Tower of London, which were stronger and more permanent.
Castles were used for defence, as a residence for the lord, and as a symbol of Norman power. They helped the Normans dominate the surrounding area and put down rebellions.
