1. Understanding the Essay Question |

Before you start writing, read the question carefully at least twice. Highlight the command words such as ‘discuss’, ‘explain’, ‘evaluate’ or ‘do you agree’. Command words tell you what type of thinking the question expects. A ‘discuss’ question asks you to look at both sides of an argument. An ‘evaluate’ question requires you to weigh up strengths and weaknesses and reach a judgement. Underlining key legal terms like ‘rule of law’, ‘justice’ or ‘fairness’ helps you keep your answer focused.

2. Planning Your Answer |

Spend five minutes creating a quick plan on a spare piece of paper. Start by jotting down your initial reaction to the question – do you agree or disagree, or is your position somewhere in the middle? Then list two or three main points that support your view. Next, think of one strong counter-argument, which shows you understand the other side. Finally, number your points in a logical order. Even a simple spider diagram or a numbered list can prevent you from going off-topic.

3. The Introduction Paragraph |

Your introduction should be short and direct. Begin by rephrasing the question in your own words to show you understand it. Then state your main opinion or argument clearly – this is called a thesis statement. Finally, outline the points you will discuss, preferably in the order they will appear. A good introduction is like a signpost that tells the reader exactly where the essay is going.

Many people assume laws must always be obeyed. However, history shows there are times when breaking a law can be justified to fight against injustice. This essay will discuss the importance of the rule of law, cases where disobedience might be seen as acceptable, and why a balance is necessary.

Each main body paragraph should follow the PEEL structure: Point, Evidence, Explanation, Link. Start with a clear Point that is directly related to the question. Provide Evidence, which could be an example from a case, a rule from school, or a historical event. Then Explain how your evidence supports the point and why it matters. Finally, Link the paragraph back to the main question or on to the next paragraph. This method keeps your writing tight and persuasive.

每一个主体段落都应遵循 PEEL 结构:Point(论点)、Evidence(证据)、Explanation(解释)、Link(链接)。

PEEL element What it means
Point A single clear idea that answers the question
Evidence A concrete example, case or quote
Explanation Analysis – how and why the evidence proves the point
Link Connect back to the overall argument or next idea

When an essay question asks you to solve a legal problem or discuss whether someone is guilty, you can use a simplified version of the IRAC method: Issue, Rule, Application, Conclusion. Identify the legal Issue – what needs to be decided. State the relevant Rule from a statute or principle. Apply the rule to the facts of the scenario, arguing both sides if possible. Then offer a Conclusion on the most likely outcome. This makes your reasoning logical and easy to follow.

当作文题目要求你解决一个法律问题或讨论某人是否有罪时,你可以使用简化版的 IRAC 方法:Issue(争议点)、Rule(规则)、Application(应用)、Conclusion(结论)。

For example, if the question is ‘Is it ever lawful to take someone else’s property without permission?’, the issue is whether a defence like necessity applies. The rule might be ‘You cannot take property that belongs to another person without consent, unless it is an emergency to prevent serious harm.’ The application would weigh the actions against that rule, and the conclusion would give a final answer.

6. Using Examples and Evidence |

In Year 7 Law, your evidence does not have to be complicated case law. You can use examples from school rules, family agreements, current news stories or historical events like the suffragettes or the civil rights movement. The key is to explain the link between the example and your point. Never simply drop in a fact without showing why it matters. Good evidence makes your argument believable and grounded.

7. Writing a Strong Conclusion |

Your conclusion should mirror your introduction but never copy it word for word. Briefly summarise your main arguments in one or two sentences. Restate your overall position clearly. Do not introduce any new ideas or evidence at this stage. If the question asks you to make a judgement, give a definitive answer. End with a thoughtful final sentence, perhaps looking at the bigger picture or suggesting a way forward.

8. Model Essay 1: ‘Should Laws Always Be Obeyed?’ |

Below is a full model essay using the frameworks above. Read through the English paragraph and then the Chinese translation to understand every layer of the argument.

Many people believe that laws exist to keep society safe and orderly. Without laws, there would be chaos, and people’s basic rights would not be protected. Therefore, in most everyday situations, laws should be obeyed without question to ensure everyone can live peacefully.

However, history teaches us that blindly following every law can sometimes be dangerous. Unjust laws have existed in the past, such as those that enforced racial segregation. People like Rosa Parks broke these laws on purpose as a form of peaceful protest. By refusing to obey an unfair rule, they drew attention to inequality and helped change society for the better.

On the other hand, if everyone decided which laws to follow, society would collapse. The rule of law means that no one is above the law, and laws are made through a democratic process. Disobeying laws without a very good reason can lead to disorder and harm innocent people. Therefore, the decision to break a law must be taken extremely seriously and only in the face of severe injustice.

In conclusion, while laws must be obeyed most of the time to maintain order, there are rare moments in history when breaking an unjust law can be morally justified. A fair society depends on people respecting the law while also having the courage to challenge rules that clearly harm human dignity and equality. The balance between order and justice is delicate, and we must always think critically about the laws we follow.

9. Model Essay 2: ‘Is It Ever Fair to Break a Rule in School?’ |

This model shows how to apply the PEEL method to a school-based scenario, which is a common starting point in Year 7 Law.

School rules are designed to keep students safe and help everyone learn in a respectful environment. For most of the time, following these rules is both necessary and fair. Arriving on time, wearing the correct uniform and listening to teachers all contribute to a positive school community.

Nevertheless, I believe there can be exceptional circumstances where breaking a school rule is understandable and even fair. Imagine a student who is late because they stopped to help a younger child who had fallen and hurt themselves. Strictly speaking, the student should have been on time, but the act of helping was more important than the rule. In this case, punishing the student would seem unfair because the rule was broken for a compassionate reason.

Some might argue that rules must be enforced without exceptions, otherwise students will find excuses for every broken rule. This is a valid point. However, a fair system allows teachers to use their judgement. Good rules are there to serve people, not to trap them. If a rule leads to an obviously unfair result, then applying it blindly defeats its purpose.

In summary, school rules should normally be respected because they protect the whole community. Yet fairness sometimes requires us to look beyond the letter of the rule and understand the context. A rules system with a little flexibility and compassion is more just than one that never allows exceptions.

10. Common Mistakes to Avoid |

Here are the most frequent errors students make when writing law essays in Year 7. Avoid these to immediately boost your marks.

  • Not answering the question. Students often write everything they know about a topic instead of focusing on what is asked. Always keep the question in front of you.
  • Missing a counter-argument. Even if your opinion is strong, showing you have considered the other side makes your essay much more convincing.
  • No evidence. Saying ‘I think this is unfair’ is not enough. You must back it up with an example, case or reason.
  • Weak or repetitive conclusion. A conclusion that just repeats the introduction word for word adds no value. Summarise and leave a lasting thought.

11. Essay Writing Checklist |

Use this checklist every time you finish a law essay. If you can tick all the boxes, you are on track for a top mark.

  • I have understood and broken down the question.
