📚 Year 7 WJEC Media: Cross-Curricular Integrated Question Practice | Year 7 WJEC

Welcome to your interdisciplinary revision guide for Year 7 WJEC Media Studies. Media texts do not exist in a vacuum — they borrow from history, language, art, science, and many other subjects. In this article, you will practise answering integrated questions that combine multiple disciplines, just like those in your assessments. Each section offers a key connection, paired examples, and bite-sized questions to train your analytical muscles.

1. Media and History: Decoding Propaganda Posters |

Media messages are shaped by the time in which they were created. A World War II recruitment poster is not just an illustration; it is a primary historical source reflecting national priorities, gender roles, and technological limits.

When you analyse such a poster, ask yourself: What historical event does it reference? What values does it promote? For example, the British ‘Keep Calm and Carry On’ poster (1939) was designed to boost public morale during air raids. The simple crown symbol represents monarchy and stability, while the bold, sans-serif font suggests no-frills authority.

Another famous example is the American ‘Rosie the Riveter’ image, which used a strong female factory worker to encourage women into wartime industries. This directly links to the history of women’s rights and labour. When you identify such connections, you show the examiner that you can see media as a window into the past.

Integrated Question: ‘Explain how the design of a 1940s public information film uses historical context to make its message more powerful.’ (6 marks)

2. Media and English: The Language of Persuasion |

Media texts are rich in rhetorical devices studied in English: alliteration, metaphor, imperative verbs, and emotive language. An advertisement for a charity might use a short, punchy slogan like ‘Donate now. Change a life.’ The imperative ‘Donate’ and the juxtaposition of ‘now’ with a future outcome create urgency and empathy.

Consider the film poster for a fantasy movie. The tagline ‘In a world without sound, one girl will find her voice’ uses contrast and narrative hook. You can link this directly to your English comprehension skills: spotting the protagonist, conflict, and setting. Media and English share the core goal of shaping a reader’s or viewer’s response through deliberate word choice.

Try rewriting a dull media headline. Original: ‘School raises money for new library.’ Improved: ‘Page by page, pupils build their dream library.’ Notice how the metaphor adds texture. This is where Media meets English. In the exam, always highlight the technique and then state the connotation.

3. Media and Art & Design: Visual Composition and Colour |

Every frame is a canvas. Artists’ techniques — such as the rule of thirds, leading lines, and colour theory — are the building blocks of media texts. Warm colours (red, orange) evoke energy or danger; cool colours (blue, green) suggest calm or sadness. In a magazine cover, the central image is often placed at the intersection of thirds to catch the eye.

When answering an integrated question, you might be asked to comment on how colour and layout support the message. For instance, a climate change poster may use a washed-out blue palette and a lone figure in the bottom third to convey isolation and environmental fragility — a link to both Geography and Art. The visual weight of an object can also be analysed: a larger, darker shape feels heavier and more important.

Quick task: Sketch a rough layout for a ‘Healthy Eating’ app icon. Justify your colour choices and composition using art vocabulary. Then pitch your idea in one sentence — that is cross-curricular thinking in action. In written answers, use terms like ‘symmetrical balance’, ‘depth of field’, and ‘contrast’ to earn higher marks.

4. Media and Geography: Representing Place and Culture |

Geography examines places and the relationships between people and their environments. Media representations of landscapes — from travel documentaries to adventure films — can reinforce or challenge stereotypes about a region. Think about a car advertisement set in a rugged mountain range; it taps into ideas of freedom, exploration, and the untouched wilderness.

An integrated question might provide a screenshot of a news report on flooding and ask: ‘How does the camera angle and choice of location footage influence the viewer’s understanding of the event’s impact?’ You need to combine your geographical awareness (flood plains, climate) with media language (close-up, aerial shot). A bird’s-eye view of a submerged town immediately communicates scale, while a ground-level shot of a single flooded home adds emotional intimacy.
