1. Core Terms: Data & Variables | 核心术语:数据与变量
Data is any collection of numbers, words, measurements, or observations used to answer questions.
数据 是用于回答问题的任何数字、文字、测量值或观察结果的集合。
Variable is a characteristic or property that can take different values, like shoe size or favourite sport.
变量 是可以取不同值的特征或属性,比如鞋码或最喜爱的运动。
Observation is each individual piece of information recorded. For example, one student’s test score.
观测值 是记录的每一条单独信息。例如,一个学生的考试成绩。
Dataset is the complete set of data collected, often arranged in a table.
数据集 是收集到的完整数据集合,通常以表格形式排列。
Population is the entire group of individuals or items that we want to know about.
总体 是我们想要了解的整个人群或项目的全部。
Sample is a smaller group chosen from the population to represent it.
样本 是从总体中选出的一个较小的群体,用以代表总体。
Think of data as the raw ingredients and variables as the recipe categories.

2. Types of Data: Qualitative vs Quantitative | 数据类型:定性数据与定量数据
Qualitative data (or categorical data) describes qualities or categories, like eye colour or types of pet. It is non-numerical.
定性数据(或称分类数据)描述性质或类别,比如眼睛颜色或宠物种类。它是非数值的。
Quantitative data is numerical and tells us quantities, such as height in cm or number of siblings.
定量数据 是数值型数据,告诉我们数量信息,比如身高(厘米)或兄弟姐妹的数量。
Nominal data is qualitative data with no natural order, like favourite colour (red, blue, green).
名义数据 是没有自然顺序的定性数据,比如最喜爱的颜色(红、蓝、绿)。
Ordinal data is qualitative but can be ordered, like survey ratings (poor, okay, good, excellent).
有序数据 是定性但可以排序的数据,比如调查评级(差、一般、好、优秀)。

3. Discrete and Continuous Data | 离散数据与连续数据
Discrete data can only take certain specific values, usually counted with whole numbers. For example, number of students in a class (you cannot have 25.5 students).
离散数据 只能取某些特定值,通常用整数计数。例如,班级学生人数(不可能有25.5个学生)。
Continuous data can take any value within a range and is measured. Examples: height (could be 152.3 cm), time, temperature.

Remember: ‘D for Discrete – you can count on your fingers; C for Continuous – you need a ruler to measure.’

4. Measures of Central Tendency: Mean, Median, Mode | 集中趋势度量:平均数、中位数、众数
Mean is the average. Add all values together and divide by the number of values.

Mean = (Sum of all values) ÷ (Number of values)
平均数 = 所有数值之和 ÷ 数值的个数
Median is the middle value when data is ordered from smallest to largest. If there are two middle numbers, find their mean.
