An atom is the smallest particle of an element that can take part in a chemical reaction. For example, a single oxygen atom is just O. Water molecules each contain two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom, H₂O. So next time, remember: atoms are the building blocks; molecules are structures made from those blocks.
