📚 Common Mistakes in Year 8 WJEC German and How to Fix Them | WJEC 8 年级德语常见误区与纠正方法

Learning German in Year 8 is exciting, but it’s easy to fall into patterns that lead to repeated errors. Whether it’s forgetting noun genders, misplacing the verb, or struggling with cases, many students find themselves making the same mistakes. This article highlights the most common pitfalls in the WJEC Year 8 German course and shows you exactly how to correct them, so you can speak and write with greater confidence.

在 8 年级学习德语令人兴奋,但很容易陷入一些反复出错的模式。无论是忘记名词的性、动词位置不对,还是混淆格的用法,许多学生都会犯同样的错误。本文指出了 WJEC 8 年级德语课程中最常见的陷阱,并告诉你们如何纠正它们,从而更自信地说和写德语。

1. Noun Genders and Articles | 名词性别与冠词

A major stumbling block is assuming that the gender of a German noun is obvious. For example, ‘Mädchen’ (girl) is not feminine but neuter (das Mädchen), because the ending ‘-chen’ always makes a noun neuter. Many learners also forget that ‘Junge’ (boy) is masculine (der Junge). The key is never to learn a noun in isolation: always memorise it with its definite article, such as ‘der Tisch’, ‘die Lampe’, ‘das Buch’. This builds a natural instinct for gender.

一个主要的绊脚石是以为德语名词的性别很明显。例如,“Mädchen”(女孩)不是阴性而是中性(das Mädchen),因为词尾“-chen”总是使名词变为中性。许多学习者也会忘记“Junge”(男孩)是阳性(der Junge)。关键在于永远不要孤立地学习名词:一定要将其与定冠词一起记住,比如“der Tisch”、“die Lampe”、“das Buch”。这样能培养对词性的自然语感。

Additionally, plural forms can surprise you. Most learners assume plurals just add an ‘-s’, like in English, but German uses many patterns: ‘das Buch’ becomes ‘die Bücher’, ‘der Mann’ becomes ‘die Männer’. Always note the plural form with the noun.

此外,复数形式也可能让你吃惊。大多数学习者以为复数只是在词尾加“-s”,就像英语那样,但德语有多种变化模式:“das Buch”变成“die Bücher”,“der Mann”变成“die Männer”。务必连同复数形式一起记名词。

2. Capitalisation of Nouns | 名词大写

In German, all nouns start with a capital letter – not just proper names. A common mistake is to write ‘ich habe einen hund’ instead of ‘ich habe einen Hund’. This rule applies to all nouns, even simple ones like ‘Schule’, ‘Freund’, ‘Wochenende’. Getting this right shows a polished understanding of written German and is an easy way to gain marks.

在德语中,所有名词都以大写字母开头——而不仅仅是专有名词。一个常见错误是把“ich habe einen hund”写成小写,正确的应是“ich habe einen Hund”。这条规则适用于所有名词,即便是像“Schule”、“Freund”、“Wochenende”这样的简单名词。正确掌握这一点表明你对书面德语有扎实的理解,也是轻松赚取分数的方法。

Note that adjectives used as nouns also become capitalised, for example ‘das Gute’ (the good thing). In your own writing, double-check every person, place, object and idea – if it’s a noun, capitalise it.

注意,用作名词的形容词也需要大写,例如“das Gute”(好的事情)。在你自己的写作中,要仔细检查每一个人、地点、物品和抽象概念——只要它是名词,就要大写。

3. Formal vs Informal ‘You’ (du and Sie) | 正式与非正式“你” (du 和 Sie)

English only has one ‘you’, but German distinguishes between ‘du’ (informal, to friends, family, children) and ‘Sie’ (formal, to adults, strangers, teachers). A typical mistake is calling a teacher ‘du’ – this can sound disrespectful. In the classroom, always address your teacher as ‘Sie’ and use the corresponding verb form: ‘Haben Sie…’, ‘Können Sie…’, not ‘Hast du…’.

英语只有一个“you”,但德语区分“du”(非正式,用于朋友、家人、孩子)和“Sie”(正式,用于成年人、陌生人、老师)。一个典型错误是对老师说“du”——这可能听起来不尊重。在课堂上,对老师始终要用“Sie”,并使用相应的动词形式:“Haben Sie…”、“Können Sie…”,而不是“Hast du…”。

Watch out for capitalisation: the formal ‘Sie’ is always capitalised, while ‘du’ is usually lower case in informal writing (though it may be capitalised in letters). Using the wrong pronoun can change the whole tone of your conversation.

要注意大写:正式的“Sie”始终大写,而在非正式书写中“du”通常小写(尽管在信件中可能大写)。用错代词会改变整个对话的语气。

4. Verb as Second Idea in Main Clauses | 主句动词第二位原则

In a German main clause, the conjugated verb should always be the second ‘idea’ or element – not necessarily the second word. Many English speakers mistakenly place the verb after the subject and then a time phrase, as in ‘Ich morgen gehe in die Stadt’. The correct version is ‘Morgen gehe ich in die Stadt’ or ‘Ich gehe morgen in die Stadt’. The verb must come right after the first idea, which could be the subject, a time phrase, or an adverb.

在德语主句中,变位动词始终应该是第二个“部分”或成分——不一定是第二个单词。许多说英语的人错误地把动词放在主语和时间短语之后,比如“Ich morgen gehe in die Stadt”。正确的说法是“Morgen gehe ich in die Stadt”或“Ich gehe morgen in die Stadt”。动词必须紧跟第一个成分,这个成分可以是主语、时间短语或副词。

A helpful check is to count the ‘slots’: slot 1 is the topic, slot 2 is the verb. If you start with ‘Jeden Tag’ (every day), you must follow with the verb: ‘Jeden Tag spiele ich Fußball’. Practising this word order until it feels automatic will eliminate many errors.

一个有用的检查方法是数“位置”:位置1是主题,位置2是动词。如果以“Jeden Tag”(每天)开头,就必须紧跟动词:“Jeden Tag spiele ich Fußball”。反复练习这种语序,直到可以脱口而出,就能消除许多错误。

5. Subordinating Conjunctions: weil and dass | 从属连词:weil 和 dass

After words like ‘weil’ (because) and ‘dass’ (that), the conjugated verb goes to the end of the clause. Students often write ‘weil ich gehe ins Kino’, but the correct structure is ‘weil ich ins Kino gehe’. The rule applies to many other connectors introduced in Year 8, such as ‘obwohl’ (although) and ‘wenn’ (when/if).

在“weil”(因为)和“dass”(那,连接词)等词之后,变位动词要放到从句末尾。学生常常写出“weil ich gehe ins Kino”,但正确的结构是“weil ich ins Kino gehe”。这条规则也适用于8年级引入的许多其他连词,例如“obwohl”(尽管)和“wenn”(当……时/如果)。

A common trick is to say the clause out loud and push the verb right to the end: … , weil ich meine Hausaufgaben mache. Make sure that separable prefix verbs stay together: ‘weil ich einkaufe’, not ‘weil ich kaufe ein’.

一个常用的技巧是把从句大声说出来,并把动词推到最后:…, weil ich meine Hausaufgaben mache。还要确保可分动词的组成部分保持在一起:“weil ich einkaufe”,而不是“weil ich kaufe ein”。

6. Prepositions and Case Confusion | 介词和格的混淆

Prepositions in German dictate which case follows: ‘mit’ always takes the dative, ‘für’ always takes the accusative, while two-way prepositions like ‘in’, ‘auf’ and ‘an’ can take either accusative (movement) or dative (location). A common Year 8 error is to write ‘mit der Bus’ instead of ‘mit dem Bus’.

With two-way prepositions, question yourself: ‘wo?’ (where) = dative, ‘wohin?’ (where to) = accusative. For example, ‘Ich bin in der Schule’ (dative, location) vs ‘Ich gehe in die Schule’ (accusative, movement). Always double-check the preposition’s partner case.

对于双向介词,问问自己:“wo?”(在哪里)用与格,“wohin?”(去哪里)用宾格。例如,“Ich bin in der Schule”(与格,位置)与“Ich gehe in die Schule”(宾格,位移)。始终要检查介词所搭配的格。

7. Adjective Endings | 形容词词尾

Adjective endings in German depend on gender, case, and article type – a tricky concept for Year 8 learners. A classic error is to say ‘ein groß Haus’ instead of ‘ein großes Haus’ (neuter, accusative, indefinite article). Often students leave adjectives unchanged, treating them like English. Remember that adjectives before nouns need an ending, and the pattern changes according to the definite or indefinite article.

德语形容词词尾取决于性、数和冠词类型——这对8年级学生来说是一个棘手的概念。一个典型的错误是说“ein groß Haus”,正确的应该是“ein großes Haus”(中性、宾格、不定冠词)。学生们常常让形容词保持不变,像英语一样处理。记住,名词前的形容词需要词尾,并且其变化模式因定冠词或不定冠词而异。

A simplified table helps:

After definite article (der/die/das) Ending often -e
After indefinite article (ein/eine) Ending reflects the gender/case (e.g. -er, -es)

Practise with high-frequency phrases like ‘der alte Mann’, ‘ein neues Handy’, ‘die nette Lehrerin’. Over time, you will start to hear what sounds right.

一张简化的表格会有所帮助:

定冠词后 (der/die/das) 词尾常为 -e
不定冠词后 (ein/eine) 词尾反映性/格(如 -er, -es)

多练习高频短语,比如“der alte Mann”、“ein neues Handy”、“die nette Lehrerin”。久而久之,你就会开始听出哪个听起来正确。

8. Modal Verb Conjugation | 情态动词变位

Modal verbs like ‘können’ (can), ‘müssen’ (must) and ‘dürfen’ (may) change their stem in the singular forms. Year 8 students frequently say ‘ich kannen’ instead of ‘ich kann’. The correct forms are: ich kann, du kannst, er/sie/es kann; wir können, ihr könnt, sie/Sie können. Similar irregularity applies to ‘müssen’ (ich muss) and ‘wollen’ (ich will).

情态动词如“können”(能够)、“müssen”(必须)和“dürfen”(可以)在单数形式时词干会变化。8年级学生经常说“ich kannen”,正确的是“ich kann”。正确的形式是:ich kann, du kannst, er/sie/es kann; wir können, ihr könnt, sie/Sie können。类似的变位不规律也适用于“müssen”(ich muss)和“wollen”(ich will)。

Also, remember that with a modal verb, the main verb goes to the end in the infinitive: ‘Ich kann gut schwimmen’, not ‘Ich kann schwimmen gut’. The modal verb carries the person and tense, while the infinitive stays in final position.

此外,记住有情态动词时,主要动词以不定式形式放在句末:“Ich kann gut schwimmen”,而不是“Ich kann schwimmen gut”。情态动词承载人称和时态,而不定式则保持在末尾位置。

9. Pronunciation of ‘ch’ and ‘ß’ | ‘ch’ 和 ‘ß’ 的发音

The ‘ch’ sound causes difficulty because it has two main versions: the soft ‘ich’ sound (after e, i, ä, ö, ü, and consonants) and the harsher ‘ach’ sound (after a, o, u). Saying ‘ich’ as ‘ick’ or ‘ish’ is a giveaway that you are a beginner. Practise the correct soft ‘ch’ by starting with ‘h’ and lifting the middle of the tongue towards the roof of the mouth. For ‘ß’, remember it represents a sharp ‘ss’ sound, as in ‘Straße’ (street). Never pronounce it as ‘b’.

“ch”的发音有难度,因为它有两种主要版本:轻柔的“ich”音(在 e, i, ä, ö, ü 和辅音之后)和较粗重的“ach”音(在 a, o, u 之后)。把“ich”发成“ick”或“ish”会暴露出你是初学者。练习正确的轻柔“ch”时,可以从“h”开始,然后让舌中部抬起靠近上颚。对于“ß”,记住它代表尖促的“ss”音,如“Straße”(街道)。千万不要把它发成“b”。

Listen to native recordings and repeat words like ‘nicht’, ‘Milch’, ‘Buch’ and ‘groß’. Consistent imitation will train your mouth muscles to produce the authentic sounds.

多听德语母语者的录音,跟读“nicht”、“Milch”、“Buch”和“groß”等单词。持续模仿会训练你的口腔肌肉发出地道的音。

10. False Friends and Confusing Words | 假朋友与易混淆词

Some German words look like English words but mean something different. The classic example is ‘bekommen’, which means ‘to receive’, not ‘to become’. A student writing ‘Ich bekomme ein Lehrer’ is trying to say ‘I become a teacher’, but they are actually saying ‘I receive a teacher’. The correct word for ‘become’ is ‘werden’.

有些德语单词看起来像英语单词,但意思不同。典型的例子是“bekommen”,它的意思是“得到”,而不是“成为”。一个学生如果写出“Ich bekomme ein Lehrer”,本想表达“I become a teacher”,实际上却在说“我收到一位老师”。表示“成为”的正确单词是“werden”。

Other false friends include ‘also’ (so, therefore, not ‘also’), ‘Chef’ (boss, not chef) and ‘Gift’ (poison, not present). Always check the meaning of a new word in context and keep a false-friend list in your notebook.

其他假朋友包括“also”(所以、因此,不是“也”)、“Chef”(老板,不是厨师)和“Gift”(毒药,不是礼物)。一定要在上下文中查证新词的意思,并在笔记本中留一份假朋友清单。

11. Word Order in Questions and Commands | 疑问句与命令式的语序

Yes/no questions in German start with the verb: ‘Hast du einen Bruder?’ not ‘Du hast einen Bruder?’. Many learners keep the statement order, which sounds unnatural. When asking a question with a question word (wie, wo, wann), that word comes first, followed directly by the verb: ‘Wann beginnt die Schule?’, never ‘Wann die Schule beginnt?’.

德语中的一般疑问句以动词开头:“Hast du einen Bruder?”而不是“Du hast einen Bruder?”。许多学习者会保留陈述句的语序,这听起来不自然。当使用疑问词(wie, wo, wann)提问时,疑问词放在句首,动词紧跟其后:“Wann beginnt die Schule?”,绝不要写成“Wann die Schule beginnt?”。

Commands (imperative) also have a specific pattern. For the ‘du’ form, you often take the stem of the verb and sometimes add ‘-e’: ‘Komm hier!’ ‘Trink das!’. For ‘ihr’, use the normal ‘ihr’ form: ‘Kommt hier!’. Avoid the beginner error of saying ‘Du kommst hier!’ as an order.

命令式也有特定模式。对于“du”的形式,通常取动词词干,有时加“-e”:“Komm hier!”、“Trink das!”。对于“ihr”,则用正常的“ihr”形式:“Kommt hier!”。要避免初学者把“Du kommst hier!”当作命令来使用的错误。

12. Overusing ‘Ich bin’ for Age | 用“Ich bin”表示年龄的错误

A very common Year 8 slip is to translate ‘I am 12 years old’ as ‘Ich bin zwölf’. In German, to express age you must use the verb ‘sein’ with the age + ‘Jahre alt’, or more naturally, just the number with ‘Ich bin … Jahre alt’. However, the crucial point is that you cannot drop ‘Jahre alt’ unless it is clearly understood in context. ‘Ich bin zwölf’ is sometimes acceptable in spoken German, but in written tasks it is safer to write ‘Ich bin zwölf Jahre alt’.

8年级一个非常常见的失误是把“I am 12 years old”翻译成“Ich bin zwölf”。在德语中,表达年龄必须使用动词“sein”加上年龄+“Jahre alt”,或者更自然地只用数字加上“Ich bin … Jahre alt”。然而,关键点在于,除非上下文清晰明了,否则不能省略“Jahre alt”。口语中“Ich bin zwölf”有时可以接受,但在书面作业中,更稳妥的写法是“Ich bin zwölf Jahre alt”。

Also avoid the trap of ‘Ich habe zwölf Jahre’ – this is a direct translation from French or Italian. Age in German uses ‘sein’, not ‘haben’.

还要避开“Ich habe zwölf Jahre”这个陷阱——这是从法语或意大利语直译过来的。德语中年龄用“sein”,而不是“haben”。
