1. What is Business? |

A business is any organisation that provides goods or services to customers in order to satisfy their needs and wants, usually with the aim of making a profit. Goods are physical, tangible items such as food or clothing, while services are intangible activities like transport or education.

Businesses exist to meet customer needs; without customers, a business cannot survive. To succeed, a business must identify what people are willing to buy and produce it at a price customers are prepared to pay, while covering costs.

Enterprises can be split into those that produce goods (such as a bakery making bread) and those that provide services (such as a hairdressing salon). Some businesses, like restaurants, combine both by making a meal and delivering a service experience.

2. Entrepreneurs and Enterprise |

An entrepreneur is a person who spots a gap in the market and takes on the risk of starting a new business to fill it. They bring together resources such as money, people and materials to turn an idea into reality. Successful entrepreneurs often share traits like creativity, determination and a willingness to take calculated risks.

Enterprise is the skill of using initiative and coming up with new ideas to create business ventures. It drives innovation, generates employment and contributes to the economic health of a country. In schools, enterprise education encourages young people to think creatively and develop problem-solving abilities.

Not every new business succeeds; many fail because of poor planning, lack of finance or insufficient demand. Entrepreneurs learn from failure and often come back with a better idea. That persistence is a key ingredient in the entrepreneurial mindset.

3. Understanding Customers and Markets |

A market is any arrangement that allows buyers and sellers to exchange products. This can be a physical location like a farmers’ market or an online platform like a website. Markets can be classified by geography (local, national, global) or by the type of product traded.

Customers purchase products, while consumers are the ones who actually use them. A business needs to understand the difference between a customer need (a basic requirement like food) and a want (a desire for a specific brand of food), and also what demand really means: the willingness and ability to buy.

Market research is used to gather data about customers and competitors. Primary research collects brand-new information directly from sources, for example through questionnaires or interviews. Secondary research uses data that already exists, such as government reports, internet sources or internal sales records. Both types help businesses make informed decisions.

4. Demand and Supply |

Demand refers to the quantity of a product that customers are willing and able to purchase at various prices. According to the law of demand, when the price of a product falls, the quantity demanded generally increases, assuming other factors stay the same.

Supply is the amount of a product that producers are willing to offer for sale at different prices. The law of supply states that a higher price typically leads to a higher quantity supplied, because businesses are motivated by the chance to earn greater profits.

The price at which demand exactly equals supply is called the equilibrium price. When demand is greater than supply, a shortage pushes prices up. When supply exceeds demand, a surplus tends to drive prices down. Markets constantly move towards equilibrium.

Equilibrium: Demand = Supply

The marketing mix is often called the 4Ps: Product, Price, Place and Promotion. These are the controllable tools a business uses to satisfy customers and gain an advantage over competitors.

Product covers everything from the design, features and quality to the packaging and branding. A successful product stands out because it meets customer needs in a way that competitors do not. Continual improvement helps maintain a product’s place in the market.

Price is the amount customers pay. Common pricing strategies include cost-plus pricing (adding a markup to the cost of production), competitive pricing (setting prices based on rivals) and penetration pricing (starting low to attract customers). The chosen price must cover costs and add value in the customer’s eyes.

Place refers to how the product reaches the customer. This could be through physical shops, online stores, wholesalers or direct delivery. The goal is to make the product available at a convenient time and location for the target market.

Promotion includes all the ways a business communicates with its customers: advertising, sales promotions, public relations and personal selling. Effective promotion raises awareness, builds a brand image and encourages people to buy.

6. Types of Business Ownership |

A sole trader is a business owned and operated by one person. The owner keeps all the profits but also bears unlimited liability, which means personal belongings could be used to pay business debts if the business fails.

A partnership is owned by two or more people who share the risks and rewards. A partnership agreement usually sets out how profits are split and who makes decisions. Most partnerships also have unlimited liability, unless they register as a Limited Liability Partnership (LLP).

Private limited companies (Ltd) are incorporated businesses that offer limited liability. This means the owners’ (shareholders’) personal assets are protected; they can only lose the money they have invested in shares. Shares are not sold to the general public on the stock exchange.

Franchising is a popular growth method where a franchisee buys the right to trade under an established brand name and business model. The franchisor provides training, marketing and support, while the franchisee pays an initial fee and ongoing royalties. This lowers some risks but reduces independence.

7. Production and Operations |

Production transforms resources (inputs like raw materials, labour and machinery) into finished goods (outputs). The three main methods of production are job, batch and flow. Each method suits different products and levels of demand.

Job production focuses on making a single, unique product for an individual customer, such as a wedding cake or a tailor-made suit. Quality is often very high, but the process can be slow and labour-intensive, leading to higher prices.

Batch production makes a group of identical products together, then switches to another group. A bakery using batch production might bake 100 white loaves, then 100 wholemeal loaves. It offers more flexibility than mass production and suits moderate levels of demand.

Flow production uses a continuous assembly line for high-volume, standardised goods such as canned drinks or cars. It requires significant investment in machinery but can produce goods quickly and with consistent quality. Efficiency is often improved through lean techniques like just‑in‑time (JIT) supply, which delivers parts exactly when they are needed to minimise stock holding.

8. Revenue, Cost and Profit |

Revenue is the total money coming into the business from selling products. It is calculated by multiplying the selling price per unit by the number of units sold. Revenue does not account for any expenses; it is simply the ‘top line’ figure
