1. Lab Safety and Personal Protective Equipment |

Always wear safety goggles whenever heating, mixing chemicals, or handling acids and alkalis. Goggles protect your eyes from splashes and harmful fumes.

Tie back long hair and secure loose clothing. Hair can catch fire near a Bunsen burner, and dangling sleeves may knock over apparatus.

Know the location of the fire extinguisher, fire blanket, and emergency shower. In case of a chemical spill on skin, rinse immediately with plenty of water and inform your teacher.

Never eat, drink, or taste anything in the lab. Wash your hands thoroughly after handling chemicals, even if you wore gloves.

2. Using Common Lab Apparatus |

A Bunsen burner is used for heating. The air hole can be opened to produce a hot blue flame (roaring flame) or closed for a safety yellow flame. Always use the blue flame for heating as it is cleaner and hotter.

A measuring cylinder is used to measure the volume of liquids. Read the bottom of the meniscus at eye level to avoid parallax errors.

A test tube should be held with a test tube holder when heating. Point the open end away from yourself and others. Use a boiling tube for larger volumes or when boiling is required.

A spatula is used to transfer solid chemicals, and a glass rod is used for stirring. Never return unused chemicals to the original container to avoid contamination.

3. Accurate Measuring Techniques |

When using a balance to measure mass, place a weighing boat or paper on the pan and zero (tare) the balance before adding the substance. Record the mass to the nearest 0.01 g or as directed.

To measure a specific volume of liquid, use a pipette or measuring cylinder. For small, precise volumes, a graduated pipette is better. Always align your eye with the graduation mark.

Thermometers should be placed in the centre of the liquid, not touching the container walls. Wait until the reading stabilises before recording the temperature, and avoid holding the bulb with your fingers as body heat can affect the reading.

4. Heating Substances Safely |

When heating a liquid in a test tube, use a gentle flame and move the tube back and forth through the flame to prevent bumping (sudden boiling). Always add anti-bumping granules if available.

For flammable liquids such as ethanol, never heat directly with a Bunsen burner. Use a water bath or electric heater instead to avoid fire risks.

After heating, allow apparatus to cool before handling. Hot glass looks the same as cold glass, so always place hot objects on a heat-resistant mat.

5. Handling and Mixing Chemicals |

Use a clean spatula for each solid chemical to prevent cross-contamination. When transferring solids from a bottle, tap the spatula gently to avoid spilling.

When pouring liquids, remove the stopper and place it upside down on the bench. Hold the bottle so the label faces your palm to protect it from drips.

If you need to smell a chemical, gently waft the vapour toward your nose with your hand. Never put your nose directly over the container.

Stir solutions with a glass rod, ensuring it does not hit the sides of the beaker too forcefully. Rinse the rod with distilled water between different solutions.

6. Making Observations and Recording Data |

Record qualitative observations immediately: colour changes, formation of a precipitate (solid), effervescence (gas bubbles), or temperature changes (exothermic/endothermic). Use precise language, such as “a white precipitate formed” rather than “it went cloudy”.

Design a results table before starting the experiment. Include headings with units, e.g., “Time (s)” and “Temperature (°C)”. Record data directly into the table, not on scrap paper.

If an observation is unexpected, still record it truthfully. Do not alter data to fit a prediction—scientists learn from anomalies.

7. Fair Testing and Variables |

A fair test is one in which only the independent variable is deliberately changed. The dependent variable is measured, and all other control variables are kept constant to ensure a valid comparison.

For example, when investigating how temperature affects the rate of reaction between magnesium and hydrochloric acid, the independent variable is the temperature of the acid, the dependent variable is the time taken for magnesium to disappear (or volume of gas produced),
