Summer Prep and Bridging Course for Year 8 SQA Media Studies | Year 8 SQA

📚 Summer Prep and Bridging Course for Year 8 SQA Media Studies | Year 8 SQA

Welcome to your summer bridging programme for Media Studies. This resource is designed for Year 8 students in Scotland who want to build a strong foundation before starting their SQA Media course. You will explore how media texts are constructed, learn to analyse what you watch, read and hear, and start creating your own media products. By the end of this summer prep, you should feel confident about key concepts such as audience, representation, narrative and media language.

1. Welcome to Media Studies |

Media Studies is about much more than just watching films or scrolling through social media. It asks you to step back and think critically about the messages you receive every day. In your SQA course you will look at different media forms — television, film, advertising, music videos, news and online platforms — and examine how they shape our understanding of the world. This bridging unit introduces the analytical skills and creative thinking that will help you succeed when you return to school.

During the summer try to notice the media around you. Every billboard, TikTok video and Netflix show is a text that has been carefully put together. Ask yourself: who made this? Why did they make it? Who is it for? These three questions form the core of media analysis, and they will guide everything you do in the coming year.

2. What Is Media? |

The word ‘media’ simply means channels of communication. In Media Studies we look at mass media — forms of communication that reach large audiences. These include print media like newspapers and magazines; broadcast media like television and radio; and digital media such as websites, social media platforms and video streaming services. Each medium has its own language and techniques, but they all share a common purpose: to convey a message from a producer to an audience.

It can help to think of media texts as products. Just like a chocolate bar is carefully packaged and marketed, a news bulletin or a drama series is shaped by a team of people. They make deliberate choices about what to include, what to leave out and how to present it. Learning to spot these choices is the first step towards becoming media literate.

3. The Key Concept: Audience |

Every media text is created with an audience in mind. The audience is the group of people who consume the media product — viewers, readers, listeners or users. Producers think carefully about audience demographics such as age, gender, interests and lifestyle. They then tailor their content to appeal to that specific group. A children’s cartoon uses bright colours and simple stories because its target audience is young; a late-night talk show features adult humour and celebrity interviews because it aims at an older crowd.

Understanding audience is central to the SQA Media course. You will learn to identify a text’s target audience by looking at its content, its style and the platform where it appears. You will also study how audiences are measured — through ratings, views and engagement — and how producers use this data to make decisions. This summer, try to identify the target audience for three different media texts you encounter.

4. Representation in Media |

Representation is how the media portrays people, places, events and ideas. It is not a simple mirror of reality; instead, media producers select and construct versions of the world. This means that what you see on screen or read in a magazine has been mediated — someone has decided which aspects to emphasise and which to hide. The media helps shape our perceptions of gender, ethnicity, social class and many other aspects of identity.

Stereotypes are simplified and often exaggerated representations of a group. While they can be useful shorthand for storytellers, they can also be harmful because they reduce complex individuals to a few characteristics. In your Media Studies work you will analyse how different groups are represented and consider the impact these portrayals have on audiences. Start practising now by looking at adverts: how are men and women shown? What jobs do they do? Who is active and who is passive?

5. Narrative and Storytelling |

Narrative is the way a story is organised and told. All media texts, from a 30-second advert to a full-length film, have a narrative structure. The most common model is the three-act structure: a beginning that sets up characters and a conflict, a middle where the conflict develops, and an end where it reaches a resolution. Understanding this helps you predict how a story will unfold and recognise when a producer is playing with your expectations.

Theorist Tzvetan Todorov suggested that narratives move from a state of equilibrium (balance) through a disruption and then to a new equilibrium. You can apply this idea to almost any story you encounter. In SQA Media you will break down narratives into their component parts and examine techniques like flashbacks, cliffhangers and parallel storylines. Over the summer, watch an episode of a TV drama and draw a simple narrative arc. Mark the moment of disruption and how order is restored.

6. Media Language: Camera Shots |

Media language refers to the technical elements used to create meaning. In moving image media, camera work is one of the most powerful tools. Camera shots are described by how much of the subject is visible. An extreme long shot (ELS) shows a vast landscape and makes characters appear tiny, often establishing location. A long shot (LS) shows the whole figure. A mid-shot (MS) frames a person from waist up and is common in dialogue. A close-up (CU) shows just the face, revealing emotion. An extreme close-up (ECU) might focus on eyes or an object in detail.

Camera angles also affect meaning. A low-angle shot looks up at a subject, making it seem powerful or threatening. A high-angle shot looks down, making a character look vulnerable. Practise spotting these shots in any film or TV programme. You can even try taking your own photographs to experiment with how framing changes the feeling of an image. This hands-on approach will prepare you for your own media production tasks later in the year.

7. Sound and Editing |

Sound is at least half of the experience in any moving image text, yet it is often overlooked. There are two main categories: diegetic sound comes from within the world of the story, such as characters talking, footsteps or a radio playing. Non-diegetic sound is added for the audience’s benefit — things like background music, voice-over narration and sound effects that characters cannot hear. Both types shape mood, pace and meaning.

Editing is the process of selecting and joining shots together. The pace of editing can create tension or relaxation. A fast-cut sequence suggests excitement or urgency; long takes allow the viewer to absorb detail and feel calm. You will also learn about continuity editing, which hides the cuts to make the story flow smoothly, and montage, which combines shots to compress time or draw comparisons. During the summer, pay attention to how a YouTube video or film scene is cut — count the seconds between edits and think about why the editor chose that rhythm.

8. Introduction to Advertising |

Advertising is a great starting point for media analysis because adverts must convey a lot of information in a very short time. They use strong visual images, catchy slogans and emotional appeal to persuade audiences to buy a product, accept an idea or change their behaviour. Often they sell a lifestyle rather than just a product: a perfume ad might promise glamour and romance, not just a scent.

In your SQA course you will deconstruct print and TV adverts, looking at elements like colour, typography, celebrity endorsement and the use of persuasive language. You will also learn about the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) and the rules that govern what adverts can and cannot say. As a summer activity, choose a magazine advert or a short TV commercial and list every detail — from the models’ expressions to the background music. Then consider: what is the advert really selling?

9. News Media and Bias |

News media claims to present facts, but every news report is a construction. Journalists and editors decide which stories to cover, which sources to quote and which images to use. These decisions can introduce bias — a tendency to favour one viewpoint over another. Bias is not always deliberate; it can come from the routines of news production, such as relying on official sources or framing a story to fit a particular angle.

As a media student you will learn to compare coverage of the same event across different news outlets. Look at how headlines are worded, which photographs are selected and whether the language is emotive or neutral. The BBC and Sky News might handle a political story quite differently, and the contrast between a tabloid and a broadsheet newspaper is often revealing. This summer, follow one developing news story for a week and make notes on how perspectives differ.

10. Social Media and Digital Literacy |

Social media platforms are not neutral spaces. Algorithms decide what appears in your feed based on your previous behaviour, creating a ‘filter bubble’ that can limit your exposure to diverse views. At the same time, anyone can publish content, which means that misinformation and disinformation spread quickly. Being digitally literate means understanding how these platforms work and being able to evaluate the credibility of sources.

Your SQA Media course will touch on these issues, especially when you analyse online news or create your own digital products. A good habit to develop now is the three-step check: pause before sharing, check the source, and look for other reports on the same topic. Also reflect on your own media footprint — what do your posts say about you? How might they be seen by future employers or college admissions tutors? Keeping a thoughtful summer media diary can help you notice patterns in your own consumption.

11. Summer Prep Task: Media Diary |

To get the most out of this bridging course, we recommend you keep a media diary for at least two weeks. Create a simple table with columns: Date, Media Text, Platform, Time Spent and Notes. Record every film, TV show, YouTube video, social media scroll, news article and podcast you engage with. In the Notes column, try to apply one of the concepts you have learned — audience, representation, narrative, media language or bias.

Date Media Text Platform Time Spent Notes
12 July Stranger Things S4.E1 Netflix 75 min Target audience: teens and young adults. Uses dark lighting and suspenseful editing to create tension. Non-diegetic music signals danger.

This diary will be a fantastic resource when you start the term. It shows your teacher that you already engage critically with media, and it will help you draw on real examples in class discussions and written tasks.

12. Preparing for Your Course |

Beyond the diary, there are simple ways to hit the ground running. First, familiarise yourself with the SQA Media course specification for your level — your school may be preparing you for National 3, National 4 or National 5 Media. Read the key outcomes and assessment requirements. Second, build a basic media vocabulary. Start using terms like target audience, close-up, diegetic sound and representation correctly in everyday conversation. Third, practise short analytical paragraphs: choose a media text, write a few sentences about its purpose and audience, then support your points with evidence from the text.

Don’t be afraid to watch, read and listen with a more critical eye — that’s what Media Studies is all about. Keep a sense of curiosity. Every time you ask ‘why is this shot used?’ or ‘whose voice is missing from this story?’, you are thinking like a media analyst. Enjoy the rest of your summer, and we look forward to seeing you thrive in your SQA Media class.
