📚 WJEC Year 8 History: Formulas and Theorems Quick Reference Handbook | Year 8 WJEC
History is not a subject of absolute laws like mathematics, but it does have its own ‘formulas’ and ‘theorems’ – repeatable patterns, frameworks and thinking tools that help you analyse the past. This handbook gathers the most important historical thinking shortcuts for Year 8 WJEC students. Use these to explain causes, weigh up evidence, assess change and build stronger arguments. Each formula is illustrated with examples from the topics you study, including Tudor and Stuart Britain, the English Civil War, the Industrial Revolution and the experience of ordinary people in Wales.
1. Causation Formula |
At its simplest, causation in history can be expressed as a chain: causes lead to an event, which then produces consequences. However, the real skill lies in sorting causes into layers – long-term, short-term and trigger factors – and in recognising that most outcomes have multiple causes rather than a single one.
Causation = Long-term causes + Short-term causes + Trigger → Event → Consequences
Long-term causes build up slowly, like background pressure. When you study the outbreak of the English Civil War in 1642, long-term causes include Charles I’s belief in the Divine Right of Kings and his steady alienation of Parliament over eleven years of Personal Rule. Short-term causes accelerate matters: Charles’s disastrous attempt to impose a new prayer book on Scotland in 1637 and the resulting Bishops’ Wars left him bankrupt and forced him to recall Parliament in 1640. The trigger – the spark that set everything alight – was Charles’s decision to march into the House of Commons with soldiers in January 1642 to arrest five MPs. That act turned political tension into armed conflict.
When writing a causation answer for WJEC, always ask yourself what made the long-term situation fragile, what turned that fragility into a crisis, and what finally tipped it over the edge. This layering stops you from giving a one-dimensional answer.
2. Change and Continuity Theorem |
History is not just about what changed; it is equally about what stayed the same. The Change and Continuity Theorem reminds us to look for the pace, scale and direction of change, and to recognise that even in periods of rapid transformation, much of life went on unchanged.
Change rate ≈ (New feature – Old feature) ÷ Time span, but always measure against continuity.
Apply this theorem to the Industrial Revolution, a core Year 8 topic. In the textile industry, the rate of change was explosive: spinning moved from cottage wheels to water frames within a generation. Yet if you explore rural Wales in the same period, many farming communities saw far more continuity than change – the seasons still dictated work, and Welsh-language culture endured. The real historical judgement comes from balancing both sides. A student who says ‘everything transformed’ will score fewer marks than one who explains exactly what transformed, for whom, and what continued.
3. Significance Assessment Theorem |
WJEC mark schemes frequently ask you to judge how significant an event, person or development was. Significance is not a fixed property – it depends on criteria. Use the formula below to build a multi-dimensional argument.
Significance = (Scale of impact × Depth of impact × Duration of impact) ÷ Contemporary relevance
Consider Henry VIII’s break with Rome in the 1530s. Scale of impact: it affected every parish in England and Wales, forever altering the religious landscape. Depth of impact: it changed not only church leadership but also what people believed about salvation, rewriting the language of worship. Duration of impact: the Act of Supremacy (1534) set England on a Protestant path for centuries, even though the religious pendulum swung back under Mary I. Yet you must also assess contemporary relevance: for a peasant in Gwynedd in 1535, the dissolution of a nearby monastery was hugely significant, while for a farmer in a distant settlement it may have been an almost invisible event for years. Recognising this variation shows sophisticated thinking.
4. Source Evaluation Formula |
Every Year 8 history exam includes source questions. There is no secret formula that makes a source ‘reliable’ or ‘biased’ automatically; instead, you must weigh up the source’s Nature, Origin and Purpose (NOP). Think of this as an equation where you adjust credibility by examining the creator and the context.
Trustworthiness = (Accuracy of content × Proximity to event) ÷ (Prejudice + Purpose to persuade)
A source produced by an eyewitness on the day of the Battle of Naseby in 1645 has high proximity, giving it potential value. But if the writer was a passionate Royalist writing a letter to rally supporters, the purpose to persuade would lower its reliability as a factual record. You would need to check its claims against another source, perhaps a Parliamentarian report. When studying the Industrial Revolution, a government report on child labour in mines may be factually accurate, yet its purpose to prompt new laws means it deliberately highlights the worst cases. Always ask: who made this, why, and when?
5. Historical Interpretation Theorem |
Historians do not all tell the same story. The Interpretation Theorem explains why: every narrative is shaped by the evidence available, the historian’s own context and the questions they ask.
Interpretation = Evidence chosen × Historian’s context (time, values, school of thought) + Argument purpose
Oliver Cromwell is a perfect WJEC example. In the Victorian era, many British historians portrayed him as a hero of liberty who stood against absolute monarchy. In 20th-century Ireland, however, historians writing from an Irish nationalist perspective often depicted Cromwell as a ruthless butcher, highlighting the massacres at Drogheda and Wexford. Both interpretations use the same broad events, but they select different evidence and filter it through different values. When you answer a WJEC interpretation question, your job is not to decide who is ‘right’ but to explain why their views differ using this formula.
6. Timeline and Periodisation Formula |
Dividing history into periods helps us see patterns, but the boundaries are invented by historians. The Periodisation Formula helps you understand why some dates are chosen as ‘turning points’ and how to structure your own chronological knowledge.
Historical period = A cluster of shared characteristics that lasted from a significant opening event to a significant closing event.
For Year 8, the Tudor period is typically 1485-1603, defined by the rule of the Tudor monarchs and religious upheaval. The Stuart period 1603-1714 encompasses civil war, a republic, restoration and the Glorious Revolution. But why does the ‘Early Modern’ period end around 1750? Because historians look for the moment when economy, society and technology shifted gears with the Industrial Revolution. Use these anchor dates actively: 1485 (Bosworth), 1534 (Act of Supremacy), 1588 (Spanish Armada), 1642 (Civil War begins), 1688 (Glorious Revolution), c.1750 (Industrial Revolution accelerates).
7. Historical Comparison Formula |
Comparison questions ask you to identify similarities and differences and, crucially, to explain them. The formula below ensures you go beyond simple description.
Comparison = Similarities (cause, experience, outcome) + Differences (cause, experience, outcome) + Reason for both
Compare the English Civil War and the Glorious Revolution, both 17th-century conflicts between Crown and Parliament. Similarities: each involved a struggle over the limits of royal power and each ended with a redefinition of the relationship between monarch and Parliament. Differences: the Civil War involved gruesome bloodshed and the execution of a king, whereas the Glorious Revolution was remarkably bloodless and replaced James II rather than executing him. Why? Because by 1688, the memory of the Civil War made both elite and ordinary people desperate to avoid another armed conflict; a negotiated solution was preferred. The formula pushes you to connect description with historical reasoning.
8. Diversity of Experience Theorem |
A single historical event is experienced very differently depending on who you are. The Diversity Theorem insists that you never treat ‘people’ as a uniform group. Always disaggregate by class, gender, region and ethnicity.
Experience = Base event × (Social class + Gender + Region + Ethnicity)
Take the Industrial Revolution. A male factory owner in Manchester experienced it as an age of opportunity, profit and political influence. A female mill worker in Merthyr Tydfil experienced low wages, long hours and the constant risk of injury from machinery. An agricultural labourer in west Wales, far from any coal mine, might have experienced the ‘Industrial Revolution’ mainly through the rising price of bread due to the Corn Laws. Your explanation of the period must reflect this variety. A teacher reading your essay will look for phrases like ‘however, for women…’, ‘in contrast, Welsh-speaking tenants saw…’.
9. Historical Argument Formula (PEE to PEEAL) | 历史论证公式(从 PEE 到 PEEAL)
Structured paragraphs are your most powerful tool in WJEC history. The basic formula is Point, Evidence, Explanation (PEE). To reach the highest marks, upgrade it to PEEAL, adding Analysis and a Link back to the question.
PEEAL = Point + Evidence + Explanation + Analysis + Link
PEEAL = 观点 + 证据 + 解释 + 分析 + 回扣
Point: state your argument sharply. Evidence: give a precise date, name or statistic. Explanation: show how the evidence supports the point. Analysis: weigh up degree, bring in a counter-example, or comment on significance. Link: connect back to the exam question. For instance, on the religious impact of the dissolution of the monasteries: ‘The dissolution transformed the religious landscape of Wales (Point). Over 40 Welsh monasteries were closed between 1536 and 1540 (Evidence). This removed the traditional centres of charity, education and pilgrimage, forcing local people to adapt to a parish-based system under royal supremacy (Explanation). However, in remote mountain regions where monastic influence had always been thin, the change was less immediately felt, which means the transformation was uneven (Analysis). Therefore, while the dissolution was deeply significant, its impact was shaped by geography (Link).’
10. Historical Context Theorem |
One of the most common errors in Year 8 history is to judge the past by today’s standards. The Context Theorem functions as an ethical rule for all historical investigation: you must first reconstruct the values, knowledge and conditions of the time.
Context = Contemporary values + Available knowledge + Technological limits + Socio-economic reality
Consider the witch hunts of the 17th century, which students may encounter when studying the Stuart period. To call the participants simply ‘stupid’ ignores the fact that in an age before modern science, many intelligent and educated people genuinely believed that the Devil could recruit humans to do harm. Misfortune, such as a failed harvest or a cow’s illness, was often sought to be explained through supernatural frameworks. Context does not excuse cruelty, but it explains why events unfolded as they did. Similarly, defending the divine right of kings made sense in a society with no concept of democracy. Rebuild the mental world first, then analyse.
11. Reform and Resistance Theorem |
Major changes rarely happen without a fight. The Reform and Resistance Theorem helps you predict and explain why certain groups push back against reforms, and why some reforms succeed partially while others are rolled back.
Resistance = Vested interest strength × Cultural shock factor ÷ Reform communication strategy
Elizabeth I’s Religious Settlement of 1559 is a superb illustration. Vested interest strength: hardline Catholics had lost political influence, but Catholic nobles still held substantial local power, while Puritans were gaining voice in Parliament. Cultural shock factor: the Settlement was deliberately designed to be moderate, keeping some Catholic ceremonies, which lowered the shock for the majority. Reform communication strategy: Elizabeth left room for individual conscience, famously saying she would not ‘make windows into men’s souls’. The result was a settlement that held for decades, though radical Puritans continued to press for further reform. The theorem forces you to see reform as a negotiation, not a decree.
