1. The ‘Dark Ages’ were entirely dark and devoid of progress | “黑暗时代” 完全黑暗毫无进步

Many students believe that the Early Middle Ages (roughly 500–1000 CE) were a time of complete ignorance, brutality and cultural standstill. They imagine that after the fall of Rome, Europe plunged into an unbroken night of backwardness.

In reality, this period witnessed important developments. The Carolingian Renaissance under Charlemagne promoted learning and the copying of manuscripts, agricultural innovations like the three-field system and the heavy plough boosted food production, and monasteries across Europe preserved classical knowledge and promoted literacy. Historians now often avoid the term “Dark Ages” because it exaggerates cultural loss.

2. The feudal system was a simple pyramid where everyone knew their place |

Textbook diagrams often show the feudal system as a neat pyramid with the king at the top, followed by nobles, knights and peasants at the bottom. Students tend to think this structure was rigid and that everyone accepted their position without question.

The reality was far more complex. Feudal relationships were based on personal bonds and mutual obligations, and there was constant negotiation between lords and vassals. A knight could hold land from several lords, creating overlapping loyalties. Monarchs had limited power and relied heavily on the support of their barons. The system also varied greatly across regions, from Normandy to the Crusader states.

3. The Vikings wore horned helmets and were only brutal raiders |

The popular image of a Viking raider always includes a horned helmet. Students frequently associate the Norse people solely with violent attacks on monasteries like Lindisfarne and assume they contributed little else to history.

There is no archaeological evidence that Vikings wore horned helmets in battle; such headgear would have been impractical. The myth largely arose from 19th-century artistic imagination. Moreover, the Norse were skilled traders, explorers and settlers. They established the Danelaw in England, founded Dublin, traded along the Volga river, and reached North America centuries before Columbus. Their society had rich oral traditions, laws and craftsmanship.

4. The Black Death was caused simply by rats and spread instantly |

A common oversimplification is that the Black Death of 1347–1351 was caused by rats alone and that as soon as infected rats arrived, the whole of Europe was immediately overwhelmed by plague.

The disease was transmitted by fleas that lived on black rats, but human-to-human transmission via respiratory droplets (pneumonic plague) also played a major role. Moreover, the spread was not instantaneous – it followed trade routes and moved gradually from the Mediterranean ports to the north. Poor sanitation, malnutrition and overcrowding in towns created ideal conditions for the epidemic, meaning it was a combination of biological and social factors rather than simply “rats caused it”.

5. History is just a list of dates and names to memorise |

Year 8 learners sometimes treat history as a memory test where success means reciting the exact years of battles and the names of every monarch in order. They can miss the bigger picture entirely.

History is fundamentally about interpreting evidence, understanding change and continuity, and analysing causes and consequences. A date like 1066 matters because it marks the Norman Conquest’s impact on English governance, language and social structure. Being able to explain why an event happened and what it led to is far more valuable than simply recalling a number. Examiners reward explanation, not just chronology.

6. Primary sources always tell the truth |

Students often assume that because a primary source was created at the time of an event, it provides a direct, unbiased window into the past. They treat chronicles, letters and official records as wholly factual.

All sources are shaped by their author’s perspective, purpose and audience. A medieval monk writing about a king might exaggerate the king’s piety to please his patron. Propaganda materials from wartime deliberately present a one-sided view. Historians must evaluate sources by asking questions about origin, motive and typicality. Cross-referencing multiple sources is essential to approach reliability, not taking any single account at face value.

7. The Roman Empire fell in AD 476 and everything collapsed

The date AD 476, when the last Western Roman emperor was deposed, is often presented as the dramatic endpoint of the Roman civilisation. Pupils then imagine that all Roman institutions, technology and culture vanished overnight.

What actually ended was imperial rule in the West. The Eastern Roman (Byzantine) Empire continued for nearly a thousand more years. In Western Europe, Roman law, Latin language, Christianity and urban patterns persisted and evolved. Many “barbarian” kings governed through modified Roman traditions. The idea of a sudden collapse is a myth: the transformation of the Roman world was gradual and complex.

8. The Magna Carta gave equal rights to everyone

When studying King John and the barons in 1215, it is tempting to view Magna Carta as a kind of early bill of rights that protected all English people and introduced democracy.

Magna Carta was primarily a peace treaty between a king and his rebellious barons. Its clauses focused on feudal rights, including protection from arbitrary taxation and the principle of judgment by one’s peers – but “peers” meant fellow barons, not common people. The majority of the population (peasants, women, serfs) gained little direct benefit. However, its later reinterpretation over centuries did lay a symbolic foundation for ideas of limited government and the rule of law.

9. Christopher Columbus was the first to discover America and proved the Earth was round

Many students learn that Columbus sailed west in 1492, discovered a “New World” and, in doing so, demonstrated that the Earth was a sphere, disproving flat-Earth beliefs of the time.

Indigenous peoples had lived in the Americas for thousands of years before Columbus arrived; he certainly did not “discover” an empty land. Furthermore, educated Europeans already knew the Earth was round – ancient Greek astronomers had calculated its circumference fairly accurately. Columbus’s achievement was opening sustained contact between the Old and New Worlds, but it was not an act of solitary discovery nor a proof of sphericity that no one needed.

10. The Industrial Revolution improved life for everyone right away

Another widespread misunderstanding is that the factory system, steam power and railways immediately raised living standards for all classes in Britain, bringing prosperity and comfort to families.

For many working people, early industrialisation brought severe hardships. Factory hours were long, wages were low, and child labour was extensive. Urban slums grew rapidly with poor sanitation and outbreaks of diseases like cholera. Although industrialisation eventually led to higher living standards and new opportunities, the immediate effects were often harmful for the poor, as detailed in contemporary reports and the novels of Charles Dickens.
