1. Revenue Formula |

Revenue is the total income a business generates from selling its goods or services before any costs are deducted. It is the starting point for measuring business performance.

The revenue formula links selling price per unit with the number of units sold.

Revenue = Selling Price per Unit × Quantity Sold

For example, if a bakery sells 200 cupcakes at £2.50 each, total revenue works out as 200 × £2.50 = £500.

2. Total Cost Formula |

Total costs are the sum of everything a business spends to produce and deliver its products. They are split into fixed costs and variable costs.

Fixed costs remain constant regardless of output (e.g. rent, salaries), while variable costs change directly with the level of production (e.g. raw materials, packaging).

The total cost formula combines these two categories.

Total Costs = Fixed Costs + Variable Costs

If a firm has fixed costs of £1,000 per month and variable costs of £3 per unit, producing 500 units gives total costs of £1,000 + (500 × £3) = £2,500.

3. Profit Formula |

Profit measures the financial gain a business makes after subtracting all costs from its revenue. It is a key indicator of success.

Profit can be calculated simply as the difference between total revenue and total costs.

Profit = Total Revenue − Total Costs

A positive profit means the business is earning more than it spends; a negative figure indicates a loss. Students often see this as ‘the bottom line’ in a profit and loss account.

4. Break-even Point Formula |

The break-even point is the level of output where total revenue equals total costs – the business makes neither a profit nor a loss. It is one of the most useful tools for planning.

To calculate the break-even point in units, you need fixed costs, selling price per unit and variable cost per unit. The difference between price and variable cost is called the contribution per unit.

Break-even Point (units) = Fixed Costs ÷ (Selling Price per Unit − Variable Cost per Unit)

For instance, if fixed costs are £4,000, the selling price is £10 and variable cost per unit is £6, the contribution is £4. The break-even output is 4,000 ÷ 4 = 1,000 units.

5. Margin of Safety |

Margin of safety shows how much sales can fall before the business reaches its break-even point. It helps assess risk.

The margin of safety can be expressed in units or as a percentage. The formula in units is straightforward.

Margin of Safety (units) = Actual Sales (units) − Break-even Sales (units)

If a company sells 2,000 units and its break-even point is 1,500 units, the margin of safety is 500 units. This means sales could drop by up to 500 units before a loss occurs.

6. Profit Margin Formulas |

Profit margins express profit as a percentage of revenue, making it easier to compare performance across different periods or businesses. The two most common margins are gross profit margin and net profit margin.

Gross profit is revenue minus the cost of goods sold (direct costs). Net profit is what remains after all expenses, including overheads, are deducted. The formulas are shown in the table below.

Profit Margin (English / 中文) Formula
Gross Profit Margin / 毛利率 (Gross Profit ÷ Revenue) × 100
(Net Profit ÷ Revenue) × 100

For a business with revenue of £50,000, gross profit of £20,000 and net profit of £8,000, the gross profit margin would be (20,000 ÷ 50,000) × 100 = 40%, and the net profit margin would be 16%.

7. Mark-up and Pricing |

Mark-up is the amount added to the cost of a product to determine its selling price. It is often expressed as a percentage of the cost.

The mark-up formula helps businesses ensure that all costs are covered and a profit is made.

Selling Price = Unit Cost + (Unit Cost × Mark-up Percentage)

This can be shortened to Selling Price = Unit Cost × (1 + Mark-up%). For example, a product costing £20 with a 25% mark-up will have a selling price of £20 × 1.25 = £25.

8. Law of Demand |

The law of demand is a fundamental economic principle describing how consumers react to price changes. It states that, all other factors being equal, as the price of a product increases, the quantity demanded decreases, and vice versa.

This inverse relationship is illustrated by a downward-sloping demand curve. Understanding the law of demand helps businesses set prices that maximise revenue without losing too many customers.

For instance, if a cinema raises ticket prices from £8 to £12, it is likely to sell fewer tickets, assuming competitors’ prices and consumer incomes stay the same.

9. Law of Supply |

The law of supply states that, ceteris paribus, an increase in the price of a good or service leads to an increase in the quantity supplied. Producers are motivated by higher profits to offer more for sale.

This positive relationship creates an upward-sloping supply curve. When the market price rises, existing firms may expand output and new firms may enter the market.

For example, if the price of organic vegetables rises significantly, farmers are likely to grow more organic crops and some conventional farms might switch to organic production.

10. Opportunity Cost and Decision Making |

Opportunity cost is the value of the next best alternative that is forgone when a choice is made. It is a core concept in business decision making because resources are limited.

Every time a business allocates time, money or resources to one project, it gives up the potential benefit from the next best option. The formula mindset is about comparing benefits.

Opportunity Cost = Return of Next Best Alternative − Return of Chosen Option (when evaluating gains)

For instance, if a student with £50 can either buy a business studies textbook or a concert ticket, and the textbook would improve grades worth a long-term benefit of £200, while the concert gives immediate enjoyment valued at £80, the opportunity cost of choosing the concert is the £200 benefit forgone.
