📚 Year 8 CCEA Computer Science: Key Terms & Vocabulary Quick Guide | CCEA 8

Welcome to your quick-reference guide for the most important terms in Year 8 CCEA Computer Science. Understanding these words will help you talk like a computer scientist, solve problems logically, and stay safe online. Keep this list handy as you revise – you can turn each definition into a flash card or teach it to a friend.

1. What is Computer Science? |

Computer Science is the study of computers, how they process information, and how we can use technology to solve real-world problems. It blends logical thinking, creativity, and systematic design.

A computer system takes input, processes it, and produces output. This simple model – called the IPO model – is at the heart of everything from a smartphone to a supercomputer.

Key terms you will hear often include ‘algorithm’, ‘program’, ‘data’, ‘hardware’ and ‘software’. Mastering them early gives you a huge advantage.

The subject is not just about coding; it also covers digital safety, how networks work, and how to organise information effectively.

2. Computational Thinking |

Computational thinking is a set of problem-solving methods used by computer scientists. It equips you with skills to break down challenges and design solutions that a machine can carry out.

There are four cornerstones: decomposition, pattern recognition, abstraction, and algorithm design. They work together like tools in a toolbox.

Decomposition means splitting a complex task into smaller, manageable parts. If you are planning a school play, you might decompose it into script, costumes, lighting, and rehearsals.

Pattern recognition is about spotting similarities between different problems. Once you notice a pattern, you can recycle a previous solution – saving time and effort.

Abstraction involves focusing only on the important details while ignoring irrelevant information. A tube map is an abstraction: it shows stations and connections but leaves out streets and buildings.

An algorithm is a precise, step-by-step plan to complete a task – just like a recipe. It must be in the correct order and clear enough that anyone (or any computer) can follow it.

3. Hardware and Software |

Hardware is any physical part of a computer that you can touch. This includes external devices like the keyboard and mouse, as well as internal components such as the CPU, RAM, and hard drive.

The CPU (Central Processing Unit) is often called the ‘brain’ of the computer. It fetches instructions from memory, decodes them, and then executes them at incredible speed.

CPU(中央处理器)常被称为计算机的“大脑”。

RAM (Random Access Memory) is temporary, fast storage that holds the data and programs currently in use. When you turn the computer off, anything in RAM disappears.

Software is the collection of digital instructions that tells hardware what to do. Operating systems (e.g., Windows, macOS), web browsers, and games are all examples of software.

There are two main types: system software (which runs the computer itself) and application software (which helps you perform tasks like writing, drawing, or programming).

4. Input, Output, and Storage |

An input device sends data into the computer so it can be processed. Everyday examples are keyboards, mice, touchscreens, microphones, and game controllers.

An output device displays or communicates the results after processing. Monitors, printers, speakers, and headphones all fall into this category.

Storage devices keep data and programs safe for later use. Hard disk drives (HDD), solid-state drives (SSD), USB flash drives, and cloud storage services save your files even when the power is off.
