1. Eight Parts of Speech | 八大词类

Noun (N) = person, place, thing or idea. Examples: ‘astronaut’, ‘forest’, ‘notebook’, ‘honesty’. Every complete sentence needs at least one noun as its subject.

名词 = 人、地、物或概念。例如:”宇航员”、”森林”、”笔记本”、”诚实”。每个完整的句子至少需要一个名词作主语。

Pronoun = a word that replaces a noun. I, you, he, she, it, we, they, me, him, her, us, them are common pronouns. They prevent repetition. E.g., ‘Maria loves her dog. She walks it every day.’

代词 = 替代名词的词。我、你、他、她、它、我们、他们、我(宾格)等是常见代词。它们可以避免重复。例如:”Maria 喜欢她的狗。她每天遛它。”

Verb (V) = an action or state of being. Action verbs show physical or mental actions (run, think, create). State verbs describe conditions (am, is, are, seem). Every sentence must have a verb to be complete.

动词 = 表示动作或存在的状态。行为动词表示身体或心理动作(跑、思考、创造)。状态动词描述情况(是、似乎)。每个句子必须有一个动词才算完整。

Adjective = a word that describes a noun or pronoun. It answers What kind? Which one? How many? E.g., ‘three golden eggs’, ‘a friendly teacher’. Adjectives add colour and precision.

形容词 = 修饰名词或代词的词。它回答”什么样的?””哪一个?””多少?”例如:”三个金蛋”、”一位和蔼的老师”。形容词增添色彩与准确性。

Adverb = describes a verb, an adjective or another adverb. It often ends in -ly and tells how, when, where or to what extent. E.g., ‘She sang beautifully.’ ‘He arrived early.’ ‘They live nearby.’

副词 = 修饰动词、形容词或其他副词。常以 -ly 结尾,说明方式、时间、地点或程度。例如:”她唱得优美。” “他到得早。” “他们住在附近。”

Preposition = shows the relationship between a noun (or pronoun) and another word. Common prepositions: in, on, under, over, between, behind, before. E.g., ‘The cat sat on the mat.’

介词 = 表明名词(或代词)与另一个词的关系。常见介词:在……里、在……上、在……下面、在……之间、在……后面、在……之前。例如:”猫坐在垫子上。”

Conjunction = a joining word. Coordinating conjunctions (FANBOYS: for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so) link equal parts. Subordinating conjunctions (because, although, while, if) start dependent clauses. E.g., ‘I went home because I was tired.’

连词 = 连接词。并列连词(FANBOYS:for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so)连接并列成分。从属连词(因为、尽管、当……时、如果)引导从句。例如:”因为我累了,所以我回家了。”

Interjection = a short exclamation expressing emotion. It often stands alone and is followed by an exclamation mark. E.g., ‘Wow!’, ‘Oh no!’, ‘Oops!’ Use sparingly in formal writing.

感叹词 = 表达情绪的短促感叹。常独立成句,并后跟感叹号。例如:”哇!” “哦不!” “哎呀!”正式写作中应少用。

2. Sentence Building Blocks | 句子构建基石

Complete Sentence Formula: Subject + Predicate (+ optional Extras)

完整句公式:主语 + 谓语(+ 可选附加成分)

Subject = who or what the sentence is about. It is usually a noun, pronoun or noun phrase. E.g., ‘The huge dragon’ in ‘The huge dragon guarded the treasure.’

主语 = 句子所谈论的人或事物。通常是名词、代词或名词短语。例如:”那条巨龙” 在 “那条巨龙守卫着财宝” 中。

Predicate = tells what the subject is or does. It always contains the verb. E.g., ‘guarded the treasure’ is the predicate. Never confuse predicate with direct object only.

谓语 = 说明主语是什么或做什么。它必须包含动词。例如:”守卫着财宝” 就是谓语。切勿将谓语与直接宾语混淆。

Object = receives the action of the verb. A direct object answers ‘what?’ or ‘whom?’ after the verb. E.g., ‘She wrote a letter’ — ‘a letter’ is the direct object. An indirect object tells to whom or for whom. E.g., ‘She gave her friend a letter.’

宾语 = 接受动词动作的成分。直接宾语回答动词后”什么?”或”谁?”例如:”她写了一封信”——”一封信”是直接宾语。间接宾语表示给谁或为谁。例如:”她给了朋友一封信。”

Complement = adds extra information about the subject or object after a linking verb. E.g., ‘The day seems perfect’ — ‘perfect’ is a subject complement. ‘They elected him captain’ — ‘captain’ is an object complement.

补足语 = 在系动词后补充说明主语或宾语的信息。例如:”那天看起来很完美”——”完美”是主语补足语。”他们选他当队长”——”队长”是宾语补足语。

Adverbial = a word or phrase that adds detail about how, where, when or why the action happens. It can be an adverb, prepositional phrase or clause. E.g., ‘In the morning, we left quietly.’

状语 = 补充说明动作的方式、地点、时间或原因的词语或短语。可以是副词、介词短语或从句。例如:”早上,我们悄悄地离开了。”

3. Tense Formulas | 时态公式

Present Simple: Subject + base verb (add -s/-es for 3rd person singular)

一般现在时:主语 + 动词原形(第三人称单数加 -s/-es)

Use for habits, facts and routines. E.g., ‘She walks to school every day.’ ‘Water boils at 100°C.’

用于习惯、事实和常规。”她每天走路上学。” “水在100摄氏度沸腾。”

Present Continuous: Subject + am/is/are + verb-ing

现在进行时:主语 + am/is/are + 动词-ing

Use for actions happening now or temporary arrangements. E.g., ‘They are watching a film.’ ‘I am staying with my cousin this week.’

用于此时此刻正在发生的动作或临时的安排。”他们正在看电影。” “这个星期我住在堂弟家。”

Past Simple: Subject + past form of verb (-ed for regular verbs; irregular forms vary)

一般过去时:主语 + 动词过去式(规则动词加 -ed;不规则动词各有形式)

Use for completed actions in the past. E.g., ‘We visited the museum.’ ‘She ate an apple.’ Signal words: yesterday, last week, ago.

用于过去完成的动作。”我们参观了博物馆。” “她吃了一个苹果。” 标志词:昨天、上周、……之前。

Past Continuous: Subject + was/were + verb-ing

过去进行时:主语 + was/were + 动词-ing

Use for an ongoing action at a specific past time, often interrupted. E.g., ‘I was reading when the phone rang.’

用于过去某一时刻正在进行的动作,常被另一动作打断。”电话响时我正在看书。”

Present Perfect: Subject + have/has + past participle

现在完成时:主语 + have/has + 过去分词

Links past to present: experience, result, or unfinished time. E.g., ‘She has finished her homework.’ ‘I have never been to London.’

连接过去与现在:表示经历、结果或未完成的时间。”她已经完成了作业。” “我从没去过伦敦。”

Future Simple: Subject + will + base verb

一般将来时:主语 + will + 动词原形

Use for predictions, promises or sudden decisions. E.g., ‘It will rain tomorrow.’ ‘I’ll help you with that.’ Also ‘be going to’ for plans: ‘I am going to start a new book.’

用于预测、承诺或即时决定。”明天会下雨。” “我来帮你。” 表示计划也可以用 “be going to”:”我打算开始看一本新书。”

4. Punctuation Rules | 标点符号规则

Full Stop (.) = signals the end of a statement. It is the strongest pause. Never use a comma where a full stop is needed — that creates a run-on sentence.

句号(.)= 表示陈述句结束。它是最强的停顿。切勿在需要句号的地方使用逗号,否则会造成流水句。

Question Mark (?) = ends a direct question. E.g., ‘What time does the bus leave?’ Do not use for indirect questions: ‘He asked what time the bus left.’

问号(?)= 结束直接问句。例如:”巴士几点离开?”间接疑问句不用问号:”他问巴士几点离开。”

Exclamation Mark (!) = shows strong emotion or urgency. Use sparingly. ‘Watch out!’ or ‘That’s amazing!’ In formal essays, avoid unless writing speech.

感叹号(!)= 表示强烈情感或紧急。应少用。”小心!” 或 “太棒了!” 正式作文中,除非写对话,否则避免使用。

Comma (,) = separates items, clauses and introductory elements. Key uses: in lists (‘apples, oranges, and bananas’), after introductory phrases (‘After school, we played football’), and before coordinating conjunctions joining two independent clauses (‘I was tired, but I finished the book’).

逗号(,)= 分隔列举项目、从句和引导成分。主要用法:列举(”苹果、橙子和香蕉”),引导短语后(”放学后,我们踢了足球”),以及连接两个独立分句的并列连词前(”我很累,但是我看完了那本书”)。

Apostrophe (‘) = shows possession or contraction. Possession: ‘the girl’s hat’ (singular), ‘the girls’ hats’ (plural). Contraction: ‘do not’ → ‘don’t’. Never use an apostrophe for simple plurals — ‘apple’s’ is incorrect for more than one apple.

撇号(’)= 表示所有格或缩写。所有格:”女孩的帽子”(单数),”女孩们的帽子”(复数)。缩写:”do not” → “don’t”。切记不要用撇号表示普通复数——”apple’s” 是错误的复数形式。

Inverted Commas (” “) or Quotation Marks = enclose direct speech or titles. UK style often uses single quotation marks first: ‘She said, “Hello.”‘ Commas and full stops go inside the closing quotation mark when quoting speech. E.g., ‘He called it “a masterpiece”.’

引号(” “)= 标示直接引语或标题。英式用法常先用单引号:’她说,”你好。”‘ 引用话语时,逗号和句号放在后引号内。例如:”他称之为’杰作’。”

Colon (:) and Semicolon (;). A colon introduces a list, explanation or quotation: ‘You need three things: courage, patience and luck.’ A semicolon links closely related independent clauses without a conjunction: ‘The sun set; the sky turned crimson.’

冒号(:)和分号(;)。冒号引出列表、解释或引语:”你需要三样东西:勇气、耐心和运气。” 分号连接两个密切相关但不用连词的独立分句:”太阳落山了;天空变得绯红。”

5. Figures of Speech | 修辞手法

Simile = comparing two unlike things using ‘like’ or ‘as’. E.g., ‘Her smile was as bright as the sun.’ Similes make descriptions more vivid and relatable.

明喻 = 用 “像” 或 “如同” 比较两个不同事物。例如:”她的笑容如阳光般灿烂。” 明喻使描写更生动可感。

Metaphor = a direct comparison without ‘like’ or ‘as’, stating one thing is another. E.g., ‘Time is a thief.’ It creates a stronger, more imaginative link than a simile.

暗喻 = 不用 “像” 而直接比较,直接说甲是乙。例如:”时间是个贼。” 它比明喻建立更强、更富想象力的联系。

Personification = giving human qualities to non-human things. E.g., ‘The wind whispered through the trees.’ Personification adds emotion and helps readers connect with abstract or inanimate objects.

拟人 = 将人的特质赋予非人之物。例如:”风在树林间低语。” 拟人增加情感,帮助读者与抽象或无生命事物建立联系。

Hyperbole = deliberate exaggeration for effect, not meant to be taken literally. E.g., ‘I’ve told you a million times.’ Hyperbole emphasises a point or conveys strong feelings.

夸张 = 为达到效果而刻意夸大,不照字面理解。例如:”我已经跟你说了一百万遍了。” 夸张可以强调观点或传达强烈感情。

Alliteration = repetition of the same initial consonant sound in neighbouring words. E.g., ‘Peter picked a peck of pickled peppers.’ Alliteration creates rhythm and memorability, often used in poetry and slogans.

头韵 = 相邻词语词首辅音重复。例如:”Peter picked a peck of pickled peppers.” 头韵制造节奏感和记忆点,常用于诗歌和标语。

Onomatopoeia = a word that imitates the sound it represents. E.g., ‘buzz’, ‘sizzle’, ‘clang’. Onomatopoeia brings sounds to life and makes description more immersive.

拟声 = 模仿所指声音的词语。例如:”嗡嗡”、”嘶嘶”、”哐啷”。拟声让声音活起来,使描写更具沉浸感。

Imagery = language that appeals to the senses (sight, sound, smell, taste, touch). E.g., ‘The warm, buttery aroma of freshly baked bread filled the kitchen.’ Strong imagery helps readers visualise scenes and feel emotions.

意象 = 调动感官(视觉、听觉、嗅觉、味觉、触觉)的语言。例如:”厨房里弥漫着刚出炉面包温暖、黄油的香气。” 强烈的意象帮助读者想象场景并感受情绪。

6. Paragraph Structure Formulas | 段落结构公式

P.E.E. Formula: Point → Evidence → Explanation

P.E.E. 公式:论点 → 证据 → 解释

Point = a clear topic sentence that states the main idea of the paragraph. It answers ‘What does this paragraph want to prove?’ E.g., ‘The author uses pathetic fallacy to reflect the character’s sorrow.’

论点 = 清晰的主题句,陈述段落中心思想。它回答”本段要证明什么?”例如:”作者运用情感谬误来反映角色的悲伤。”

Evidence = a quotation, fact or example that supports your point. Embed it smoothly. E.g., ‘The text states, “The sky wept with her.”‘

证据 = 支持论点的引文、事实或例子。要自然嵌入。例如:”文中写道,’天空与她一同哭泣。’”

Explanation = analyse how the evidence proves the point. Discuss language, effect and the writer’s purpose. E.g., ‘The word “wept” personifies the sky, linking the outer world to her inner pain and highlighting the depth of her grief.’

解释 = 分析证据如何证明论点。讨论语言、效果和作者意图。例如:”‘哭泣’一词将天空拟人化,把外部世界与她的内心痛苦联系起来,突显了她悲伤的深度。”

P.E.E.L. Extension: Point → Evidence → Explanation → Link

P.E.E.L. 扩展公式:论点 → 证据 → 解释 → 连接

Add a Link sentence that connects back to the question or forward to the next paragraph. E.g., ‘This technique continues throughout the novel, deepening our understanding of the protagonist’s isolation.’

加上一个 连接 句,回扣题目或引出下一段。例如:”这一手法贯穿小说始终,加深了我们对主角孤独处境的理解。”

Narrative Paragraph Formula: Opening → Build-up → Problem → Resolution → Ending. Use this to structure descriptive or story paragraphs, varying sentence openings and including sensory details.

记叙文体段落公式:开端 → 发展 → 问题 → 解决 → 结尾。用此公式组织描写或故事段落,变换开头句式,加入感官细节。

7. Text Type Blueprints | 文章类型蓝图

Narrative (Story) Blueprint: Orientation (who, what, where, when) → Complication (trigger event) → Sequence of events → Climax → Resolution. Use past tense, time connectives and dialogue to drive the story forward.

记叙文蓝图:定场(谁、什么、哪里、何时)→ 变故(触发事件)→ 事件序列 → 高潮 → 结局。使用过去时、时间连接词和对话推进故事。

Persuasive Writing Blueprint: Hook (rhetorical question or bold statement) → Opinion stated → Reason 1 + evidence → Reason 2 + evidence → Counter-argument & rebuttal → Strong conclusion (call to action). Use persuasive devices like rule of three, emotive language and imperatives.

议论文/劝说文蓝图:开篇钩子(反问句或醒目的陈述)→ 表明观点 → 理由一+证据 → 理由二+证据 → 反方观点及反驳 → 有力的结论(呼吁行动)。运用三式排比、情感语言和祈使句等劝说技巧。

Information/Explanation Blueprint: Title → Opening statement (introduce topic) → Sequenced paragraphs, each built around one key fact or step → Closing summary or interesting fact. Use present tense, technical vocabulary and diagrams where helpful.

说明文蓝图:标题 → 开篇陈述(介绍主题)→ 按顺序排列的段落,每段围绕一个关键事实或步骤 → 结尾总结或趣闻。使用现在时、专业词汇,必要时配图。

Letter (Formal) Blueprint: Sender’s address (top right) → Date → Recipient’s address (left) → Salutation (‘Dear Sir/Madam,’) → Introduction → Body in clear paragraphs → Formal closing (‘Yours faithfully,’ or ‘Yours sincerely,’) → Signature and printed name. Keep tone respectful and to the point.

正式书信蓝图:寄信人地址(右上)→ 日期 → 收信人地址(左)→ 称呼(”尊敬的先生/女士,”)→ 引言 → 正文分段清晰 →
