1. Case Study 1: Definite Article Mistakes | 案例1:定冠词错误

A student wrote: Ich fahre mit die Auto zur Arbeit. The mistake is in the article after the preposition “mit”. In German, prepositions control the case of the noun that follows. “Mit” always takes the dative case. The dative form of the feminine article “die” is “der”. However, “Auto” is neuter (das Auto), so its dative is “dem”. The correct sentence should be: Ich fahre mit dem Auto zur Arbeit.

一个学生写道:Ich fahre mit die Auto zur Arbeit. 错误出在介词“mit”后面的冠词上。在德语中,介词决定其后名词的格。“mit”永远支配第三格。阴性冠词“die”的第三格是“der”,但“Auto”(汽车)是中性名词,第三格应为“dem”。正确的句子是:Ich fahre mit dem Auto zur Arbeit.

Wrong Correct
mit die Auto mit dem Auto

2. Case Study 2: Verb Second Position | 案例2:动词第二顺位

A student wrote: Heute ich gehe ins Kino. In a German main clause, the conjugated verb must always be in the second position. The first position can be a subject, an adverb (like “heute”) or another element, but the verb comes immediately afterwards. Because “Heute” occupies the first place, “ich” must follow the verb. The correct sentence is: Heute gehe ich ins Kino.

一个学生写道:Heute ich gehe ins Kino. 在德语主句中,变位动词必须永远在第二位。第一位可以是主语、副词(如“heute”)或其他成分,但动词必须紧随其后。由于“Heute”占据了第一位,“ich”就要放在动词后面。正确句子是:Heute gehe ich ins Kino.

This is one of the most common word order mistakes for English speakers, because English keeps the subject next to the verb. Always check which element is in position one and then place the verb second.

这是英语使用者最常犯的词序错误之一,因为英语的主语和动词紧挨着。务必检查第一位是什么,然后把动词放在第二位。

3. Case Study 3: Adjective Endings with Indefinite Articles | 案例3:不定冠词后的形容词词尾

A student wrote: Ein nett Frau wohnt nebenan. When an adjective stands before a noun with an indefinite article (ein, eine, ein), the adjective takes a special ending that shows the gender and case of the noun. “Frau” is feminine, nominative case. After “eine” the adjective should end with “-e”: Eine nette Frau wohnt nebenan. If the article was definite, it would be “die nette Frau”.

一个学生写道:Ein nett Frau wohnt nebenan. 当形容词前有不定冠词(ein, eine, ein)时,形容词需要加上体现名词性、数、格的词尾。“Frau”是阴性名词,第一格。在“eine”之后,形容词词尾应为“-e”:Eine nette Frau wohnt nebenan. 如果是定冠词,则是“die nette Frau”。

Remember the pattern: with indefinite articles, the adjective takes over the gender and case marker. For masculine and neuter nominative, the ending is “-er” or “-es”, but for feminine it is “-e”. Without an article, endings become even stronger, e.g. “nettes Kind”.

记住这个规律:在不定冠词后,形容词会承担起表示性、数、格的功能。阳性、中性第一格词尾为“-er”或“-es”,而阴性是“-e”。没有冠词时,词尾会更强,例如“nettes Kind”。

4. Case Study 4: Preposition Cases – mit, von, zu | 案例4:介词接格 – mit, von, zu

A student wrote: Er kommt mit das Fahrrad. The preposition “mit” always demands the dative case. “Das Fahrrad” in the dative becomes “dem Fahrrad”. The correct version is: Er kommt mit dem Fahrrad. The same rule applies to “von” and “zu”: for example, “zu die Schule” is wrong, it must be “zur Schule” (zu der → zur).

一个学生写道:Er kommt mit das Fahrrad. 介词“mit”永远要求第三格。“das Fahrrad”在第三格变成“dem Fahrrad”。正确的说法是:Er kommt mit dem Fahrrad. 同样的规则也适用于“von”和“zu”:比如“zu die Schule”是错误的,必须是“zur Schule”(zu der 简写为 zur)。

Certain prepositions such as aus, bei, mit, nach, seit, von, zu, gegenüber are dative-only prepositions. A simple mistake with the article can change the meaning or sound unnatural. Practise by learning these prepositions with the phrase “mit dem, von der, zu dem” permanently in your mind.

一些介词如aus, bei, mit, nach, seit, von, zu, gegenüber是纯第三格介词。冠词上的简单错误会改变意思或听起来不自然。可以通过牢记“mit dem, von der, zu dem”这样的搭配来练习。

5. Case Study 5: Modal Verbs and Infinitive Placement | 案例5:情态动词与不定式的位置

A student wrote: Ich muss machen meine Hausaufgaben. When a modal verb (mussen, konnen, wollen, etc.) is used, the second verb stays in the infinitive and moves to the end of the clause. The sentence should be: Ich muss meine Hausaufgaben machen. The object “meine Hausaufgaben” stays before the infinitive.

一个学生写道:Ich muss machen meine Hausaufgaben. 使用情态动词(mussen, konnen, wollen 等)时,第二个动词以原形出现,并置于句尾。句子应为:Ich muss meine Hausaufgaben machen. 宾语“meine Hausaufgaben”放在不定式之前。

If there are several elements in the sentence, the infinitive always comes last: e.g. Ich möchte heute im Park spielen. Avoid inserting the infinitive immediately after the modal verb; that pattern is English, not German.

如果句中有多个成分,不定式永远在最后:例如Ich möchte heute im Park spielen. 不要把不定式直接放在情态动词后面;那是英语的语序,不是德语的。

6. Case Study 6: Negation – kein vs nicht | 案例6:否定词 kein 与 nicht

A student wrote: Ich habe nicht einen Stift. In German, when you want to negate a noun without a definite article or negate “a/an” something, you normally use “kein-” with the appropriate ending. “Einen Stift” is masculine accusative, so it should become “keinen Stift”. The correct form is: Ich habe keinen Stift. “Nicht” is used to negate verbs, adjectives or whole phrases.

一个学生写道:Ich habe nicht einen Stift. 在德语中,如果要否定不带定冠词的名词或者否定“一个”某物,通常要用带合适词尾的“kein-”。“einen Stift”是阳性第四格,因此应变成“keinen Stift”。正确形式为:Ich habe keinen Stift. 而“nicht”用于否定动词、形容词或整个短语。

Compare: Das ist nicht mein Stift. (negating possession) vs Ich habe keinen Stift. (negating existence). The rule is: kein replaces the indefinite article, while nicht is used elsewhere. This case study helps you choose the right negation for every situation.

比较:Das ist nicht mein Stift.(否定所属关系)与Ich habe keinen Stift.(否定存在)。规则是:kein 代替不定冠词,而 nicht 用于其他情况。这个案例帮你根据语境选用正确的否定词。

7. Case Study 7: Question Words and Word Order | 案例7:疑问词及词序

A student wrote: Wann du kommst? In a W-question (starting with wann, wie, wo, was, wer, etc.), the finite verb comes directly after the question word, followed by the subject. The correct sentence is: Wann kommst du? The same rule applies to all W-questions: Wo wohnst du?, Was machst du?.

一个学生写道:Wann du kommst? 在以疑问词(wann, wie, wo, was, wer 等)开头的特殊疑问句中,变位动词紧跟在疑问词之后,然后是主语。正确句子是:Wann kommst du? 同样的规则适用于所有特殊疑问句:Wo wohnst du?Was machst du?

This is another case where English word order can mislead you, so always ask yourself: Is the verb second? In a question with no question word, the verb comes first: Kommst du heute? Either way, the verb is usually position 1 or 2.

这又是一个英语词序可能误导你的情况,所以要时刻自问:动词在第二位吗?在没有疑问词的疑问句中,动词在第一位:Kommst du heute?。总之,动词通常不是第一位就是第二位。

8. Case Study 8: Possessive Pronouns Without a Noun | 案例8:独立物主代词

A student wrote: Das ist mein Buch, aber das ist dein. When a possessive pronoun stands alone without a noun, it needs an ending that matches the gender, number and case of the replaced noun. “Das Buch” is neuter, so “dein” must become “deins” (or “deines” depending on preference). The correct sentence: Das ist mein Buch, aber das ist deins.

一个学生写道:Das ist mein Buch, aber das ist dein. 当物主代词单独使用、后面没有名词时,需要加上与所替代名词的性、数、格一致的词尾。“Das Buch”是中性,所以“dein”必须变成“deins”(或根据偏好使用“deines”)。正确句子:Das ist mein Buch, aber das ist deins.

Similarly: “Der Kuli ist meiner.”, “Die Tasche ist meine.” This is a very frequent slip in Year 8 writing, but mastering it makes your German sound much more natural.

类似地:“Der Kuli ist meiner.”,“Die Tasche ist meine.” 这是 Year 8 写作中非常常见的错误,但掌握后会让你的德语听起来自然很多。

9. Case Study 9: Perfect Tense Auxiliary – haben or sein? | 案例9:现在完成时助动词 haben 还是 sein?

A student wrote: Ich bin einen Film gesehen. The perfect tense in German is formed with either “haben” or “sein” plus the past participle. Most verbs use “haben”. Verbs of movement from A to B or change of state use “sein”. “Sehen” is not a movement verb, so it takes “haben”. The correct sentence is: Ich habe einen Film gesehen.

一个学生写道:Ich bin einen Film gesehen. 德语现在完成时由“haben”或“sein”加上过去分词构成。大多数动词用“haben”。表示位置移动或状态变化的动词用“sein”。“Sehen”不是运动动词,因此要用“haben”。正确句子是:Ich habe einen Film gesehen.

Examples with “sein”: Ich bin nach Hause gegangen., Er ist schnell gelaufen. Keep a list of common “sein” verbs such as gehen, kommen, fahren, laufen, springen, werden, bleiben. When in doubt, check the dictionary.

用“sein”的例子:Ich bin nach Hause gegangen.Er ist schnell gelaufen. 可以整理一份常见的“sein”动词列表,如 gehen, kommen, fahren, laufen, springen, werden, bleiben。不确定时,查一下字典。

10. Case Study 10: Conjunction “denn” and Word Order | 案例10:连词“denn”与词序

A student wrote: Ich kann nicht kommen, denn habe ich keine Zeit. The conjunction “denn” (meaning “because”) is a coordinating conjunction, which means it introduces a main clause with normal word order. The verb must come second, not first. Therefore, the clause after “denn” should be: denn ich habe keine Zeit. The whole sentence reads: Ich kann nicht kommen, denn ich habe keine Zeit.

一个学生写道:Ich kann nicht kommen, denn habe ich keine Zeit. 连词“denn”(意思是“因为”)是一个并列连词,这意味着它引导一个正常词序的主句。动词必须在第二位,而不是第一位。因此,“denn”后面的分句应为:denn ich habe keine Zeit. 整体句子为:Ich kann nicht kommen, denn ich habe keine Zeit.

This is different from “weil”, which is a subordinating conjunction and sends the verb to the end: … weil ich keine Zeit habe. Confusing these two structures is a typical Year 8 mistake. Remember: “denn” keeps the verb second; “weil” pushes the verb to the end.

这与“weil”不同,“weil”是从属连词,会把动词推到末尾:… weil ich keine Zeit habe. 混淆这两种结构是Year 8的典型错误。记住:“denn”保持动词第二位;“weil”把动词推到句末。
